Well, here's the deal. When I was growing up, many of my black friends refused to go swimming (at the lake or the pool.) They said they couldn't swim, and really had no desire to do so.
Perhaps it's simply a cultural thing. I even remember an episode of MTV's Cribs that showed some guy talking about his pool and how he's never been in it - and made some comment like "You know us black folks and swimmiing don't mix."
So yeah, it's not like a totally foreign idea or concept from this guy - there is some history of it, whether true or not.
