here are some interesting facts

According to the Centers for Disease Control, in 2000, black people drowned 1.4 times as much as white people. That rate, however, increases for black children ages 5 to 19; they drown 2.4 times as much. Black adolescent males are 12 to 15 times more likely to drown than white adolescent males.

wow, that's pretty bad...

in his defense, however, the ratio of blacks to whites on not knowing how to swim is 2:1. more blacks die of drowning and not knowing how to swim each year than whites.

and if his stereotyping is correct? What then? Still racist?

PCness pisses me the fvck off, if what you say is true then there is nothing wrong with it IMO.

Stereotypes cannot be correct. I don't know why people keep thinking this. The whole point to a stereotype is to overgeneralize a group to a particular activity/look.

Overgeneralization in itself is subjective so no, stereotypes can never be correct as that would go against the very definition of stereotype.

If I generalize that most asians have a high IQ, and indeed... most asians have a high IQ, than I am correct. Nothing wrong with that.

If I say most PEOPLE like chicken, and indeed... most people like chicken, yes Im stereotyping, but Im also correct.

Now if I say most black people like chicken, and indeed... most black people do like chicken, all of a sudden its a racist comment and i'm stereotyping which is now bad.

Im sorry, but if its true its not bad IMO. If its true that most black people don't swim well, I have no problem with someone saying it. Granted, I'm sure some black people do swim well, but no one ever claimed that ALL black people can't swim. It was simply stated that a lot of black people do not swim well, or at all. This seems to be true. Stereotyping? Sure. Anything wrong with it? Hell no.

Well, he does speak the truth you know. I've never seen a black person in a swimming pool in my life. You know, they hate water and the cold.

Many that argue this, are indeed racist.

Not the best political statement to make, but I'm not going to argue with his verdict. I have many African American friends, and few know how to swim.

It actually is quite a problem here in the Netherlands.
A lot of adults and children from immigrant families (even 3rd generation ones) don't know how to swim. Considering the huge amount of waterworks here to keep our feet dry this is a serious problem.

It's a cultural thing I think because a lot of schools offer swimming lessons, but since it's optional they can force anyone.

Once you throw race in to the picture, the comments become racial.

The whole black people cannot swim dates back to times when they did not have the same access to facilities that white people did and also dates back to the time when it was assumed black people did not have the intelligence to learn much of anything.

I am willing to bet if the country was surveyed as a whole, you'd find the same percentages of each race with swimming, or lack of swimming knowledge.

What happens though is people only see what's happening in their own backyard and assume since it's that way there, it must be that way everywhere.

If you're going to even make a comment, at least be smart enough to compliment the other races.

BZZZT. now that was stereotypical AND racist. the correct answer is:

"Well, he does speak the truth you know. I've never seen a black person in a swimming pool in my life. You know, most hate water and the cold. "

change "most" to "the ones I know/seen/encountered" and we're getting somewhere.

Yes Crescent, most blacks have a high bone density and when combined with low body fat, they don't flote very well. Even blacks that swim well, will swim 1.5" deeper in the water than the average white swimming. This causes drag.

OP, your trying way to hard to be PC. Some of the young asshats on ATOT love that race card too much :p

I'd have to agree with the whole black people in the water thing. I have several black friends, and even they admit that the majority of their race don't/can't swim very well. I mean look at skiing, snowboarding, hockey, swimming, diving, or anything related to water and the cold and you will see that black people simply don't dominate in those areas. That's the truth. Nothing racist, nothing hateful.

On the flip side, black people just tear up anything related to running, weight lifting, boxing, football, basketball, baseball, (athletics) etc. That's just reality.

Each race excels in different areas and isn't so good in others. Why can't that be accepted? Those politically-correct people out there really need to lighten up a bit. Don't interpret everything even slightly related to skin color as blatant bigotry. Just accept how God made you and live with it.

Edit - I believe the swimming thing has to do with black people have greater bone densities, and lower body fat percentages then other races. While this is not good for swimming, it is an advantage in land sports where muscle and power dominate. It seems to me that most black people are naturally muscularly defined, and that would most likely appear to be the reason.

whether it be true or not, either way it definitely something you dont say as a candidate running for office of a place that has a lot of black people. a lot of things are true about people that you just dont bring up if you are looking to be popular

Accepting and celebrating our differences is great as long as it doesn't limit the opportunities for the individual. There are plenty of black people who are good swimmers, just like there are plenty of women who are good in math and science, or Jews who suck at accounting. ;) The ratios just aren't the same as for white males.

The PC police are annoying but they do have a worthy goal - it's to make sure that a black kid who wants to try out for the swim team gets the same chance to prove his merit as the other kids, and doesn't just get written off because other people who look like him don't swim well. But at the same time you want to make allowances for the norm - for example a Katrina-style flood might pose a bigger problem in a black neighborhood than a white one because porportionally fewer of them can swim to safety. It gets very complicated very quickly. That's the real burden of multiculturalism.
