No more nudes in Playboy?!

The iconic men’s magazine Playboy said Monday that it is planning to drop fully nude female photography from its pages.
The news, first reported by The New York Times, is bound to send shock waves through the magazine industry, since Playboy has been a part of American popular culture since its debut in 1953.
The magazine’s redesign, which will reportedly take place next March, appears to be a reaction to the ever-growing accessibility of online pornography.

Hey, they had a pretty good run and now, more than 60 years after its founding, it's going to morf into, what, a fashion, style and culture mag?

No doubt the ease with which anyone can find nudes on the internet was a big part of this, but part of it if you ask me was the type of women they favored in the last 30 years or so.

Playboy defined the manicured, airbrushed/photoshoped Barbie look with women that often had plastic surgery and Hollywood followed suit. The last 20 years or so has shown that most people prefer the more natural looking types and Playboy lost out to the internet/web companies that tended to feature women that were not photoshoped and were less inclined to cosmetic surgery. This was not what Hef wanted so they were left behind.

I'm old enough to remember when Playboy was HUGE and was like gold for a teenage boy. It is interesting that through the 70's and into the mid 80's Playboy did in fact feature many of the 'girl next door' types, but starting in the mid 80's they tended to feature women that were more like the girl from another planet -- beautiful for sure, but looking like they were created by Monsanto. Something happened to Hef about the time he had his stroke and Playboy changed just about that time.

As someone that remembers when Playboy was huge this is sad news but not unexpected.

They actually did used to have some good articles and stayed up on new tech/style at the time (pre- internet), unlike Hustler etc.

It was pretty much a culture mag once upon a time.

Umm, no!

First of all Playboy was big decades ago before the internet came around and with the advent of the internet and particularly the various web based nudes ad porn offerings available to anyone with access to the internet 12 year olds have no need to hunt down an actual magazine.

I was a subscriber for years. It's a damn shame if this is true but I kinda saw it coming. It kind of turned into a metro male magazine and that's when I stopped. It's like they couldn't find their identity.

Oh well life goes on.

Anyway, magazines are near death. So, might as well turn cheesecake like Maxim and tap into another market / segment.

Kind of ironic when you think about it. Hefner split from Esquire and started Playboy and now it sounds like it is essentially going to turn into Esquire.
