I disagree to a point. The US sure as heck won't even think about an invasion at this point.

Well hopefully the U.N. will put their foot down and write N. Korea a stern letter, that'll teach 'em. Perhaps even give them the evil eye :Q

having a nuke is probably the best thing that ever happened to NK.

***USATODAY.com Breaking News***

SEOUL, South Korea- North Korea said Monday it has performed its first-ever nuclear weapons test. The country's official Korean Central News Agency said the test was performed successfully and there was no radioactive leakage from the site.

There has been no confirmation from U.S. or U.S. geological survey of the test.

Any Japanese here? Would a N Korean nuke test be enough to drive the atom-phobic Japanese over the edge to develop a Device?

Or will the Japanese reaction be to beef up conventional military capability instead?

Considering the new PM is a conservative, I highly doubt they will just roll over and continue business as usual wrt Dear Leader Kim.

If and when confirmation comes that NK atomic devices are missile-launchable, the Japanese public is going to be in a REAL tizzy.

oh, the japanese are so totally going nuclear now. the international system has proven itself ineffective. perhaps they'll also amend their constitution so they can fight wars now too. south korea may perhaps, i dunno. japan is certainly just months away from a nuke.

Don't worry. Sony's making them a nuke.

It's more likely than ever that supplies will be cut off to them, all petrol, food, banking, etc. I think they should be cut off completely, starve them out while they still don't have nuclear missiles. China doesn't need this, they have more to loose than anyone except S. Korea, and has a lot of pull in the U.N.

Sony's nuke will probably NOT explode 😀😀

You people live in a dream world. Not only does the US have not intention of invading NK, nor ever did, this is just one of the first nails in NK's coffin.

NK probably cant even detonate a bomb on foreign soil, they dont have the capability to deliver it. if the US or the world were to take military action, now would be the time to do it.

I see 2 reasons for NK to want to develop a nuke. 1 is that they want to escalate things and go on a true war footing. 2 is that Kim is scared sh!tless of loosing his power and wan't something to keep him in office. He's looking at Iraq and saying I could be next. I think #2 is more likely and if so much less worrisome as the world will end up taking a hands off approach to NK and it will go about it's merry closed off little way spiralling into failure.

North Korea in nuclear test claim

North Korea says it has carried out its first ever test of a nuclear weapon, the state news agency has reported.

It said the underground test, done in defiance of international warnings, was a success and had not resulted in any leak of radiation.

A South Korean official said an explosion had been detected in the north-east of North Korea, measuring 3.5 on the Richter scale.

North Korea said last week that it planned to test a nuclear weapon.

South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun has called an emergency meeting of his government's National Security Council.

A South Korean official said that there had been a grave change in the security situation on the peninsula.

Officials in South Korea have been quoted as saying that an explosion was detected in north Hamgyong province in North Korea.

South Korea's Yonhap news agency is reporting that the test took place in Gilju in Hamgyong province.

Prior to the test, there had been speculation that any such trial would take place either in Gilju or Hagap in the centre of the country.

The entire region has been on high alert since North Korea said last week it would conduct a nuclear test.

Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has just arrived in Seoul for a meeting with Mr Roh, following talks on the crisis with his Chinese counterparts in Beijing.

At the Beijing summit, Japanese and Chinese leaders had earlier said that such a test would be considered "unacceptable".

I'm guessing it's #2 as well.
