NK tested the weapon

I'm going to take this news with a grain of salt until I get confirmation from the US Geological Survey that there was a nuclear detonation. It could just be North Korea attention-whoring again.

North Korean missiles can obviously reach Japan and South Korea without difficulty, they can get to Alaska, and within a few years, Hawaii and and the Northwest will be in range. I don't know how accurate those missiles are, though.

War with North Korea would not be pretty. If you think that losing one soldier per day in Iraq is bad, think about what it would be like to lose an entire carrier battle group.

So let me get this straight. We go knocking on Saddam's door claiming that he's building nukes (which he wasn't), NK had a free pass to make their own.

Interrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrresting.

We do not have the military capability to effectively attack North Korea without taking absolutely unacceptable losses.

Nukes are on the market ladies and gentleman. Lets hear it for the highest bidder.

$100M going once
$105M to (-enter country here), do I hear $110M?
$135M to (-enter country here), going once

Oh yeah? How many of these do you think we have???

Answer: 5,735 active, 9,960 total.

You don't think we can win that war?

There is NO need to invade NK. Them having nukes is the best case scenario to guarantee their demise. They are a rogue nation. They can't use their nukes without being WIPED off the map in less than 20 minutes. They can't give/sell nukes to other parties to use either because now that they have nukes they will simply be warned that any nuclear weapon used ANYWHERE will be assumed to have come from NK and they will be wiped off the map in 20 minutes. Ignore them and they simply die a slow death they have brought upon themselves.

No. That's not how this will play out.

In order to wipe them off the map you have to give up South Korea. Millions will be killed.

Do you have any concept of what would happen if we launched a nuclear strike against North Korea? Do you really think that China would not do anything? Even if they did nothing, and if North Korea only has one nuclear weapon, they would attack Seoul with it once they knew they were getting nuked.

Would we win? Sure. We could nuke the planet and knock everyone else back to the stone age if not farther. Our losses, however, would not be acceptable.

So the hands on the doomsday clock move to what, 10 seconds to midnight?

I am sorry but I had to chuckle at some of the comments on this thread. It's amazing how much ignorance is shown here. I am South Korean, lived there until 9 and went back there few more times. Most of my relatives reside there:

1. NK will never consider attacking SK again or Japan for that matter. Those who are saying, "OMG they are going to nuke us!" or "WW III." Fvcking please, oh, and calm down. It's funny how S. Koreans are calmer and live right next to NK, yet people here living thousands of miles away are freaking out.

2. Geopolitics of NK is much more complicated than, say, Iraq and Afghanistan. Thus, drop pre-emptive strike jingoistic bull$hit now. NK has barrages of missles and artilleries aimed at Seoul, a metropolis, not to mention Tokyo as well (What Choatic42 said). Just imagine your state as SK and a state next, top, or below you as NK with artelleries and missles aimed at you.

3. China would not allow a war. It will pay HEAVILY with economic repercussions. Although it does not want to see a U.S. ally on its border, if a war breaks lose, it will most likely side with the U.S. and SK due to ramifications. Because the other choice would be siding with a starving nation and going to war against the world with little chance to win.

NK wants attention and leverage. It's also very afraid, because it just witnessed the U.S. wiping out the Taliban and then pre-emptive striking Iraq with lies. Kim Jong-Il is scared shitless right now.

Im going to bed, if this is the last time I get to post on here due to a nuke......Thanks for the hundreds of wasted minutes on here

Well, the world's been seeming pretty boring to me...now it gets interesting again.

I can already hear Kim Jong Il's maniacal laughter...'OMG KEKEKEKE PWND ^_^'

Half past dubya's arse - quarter to his bombs.

lol, nice one.

In all honesty, I await to see what time they move it to. At present, we're at "seven minutes 'till midnight." I predict we'll be 5minutes 'till midnight.

Nah, that's too conservative. I think we'll go 4 minutes, 3 if Iran gets something before the next update.

Is there a reason why countries like Iran and N. Korea insists on bi-lateral talks with the U.S. and why the U.S. refuses to do so?

I imagine the U.S. is following the "we don't negotiate with terrorists" policy. I can't say as I blame them either, I imagine the talks go something like

NK: we have nuclear weapons, get rid of your economic sanctions.
US: screw you hippies.

4.0 on the Richter scale is 1 kiloton. So depending on wheth you use the 3.5 or the 4.2 on the richter scale measurements this is either a tiny nuclear explosion, or just a really small nuclear explosion. At best (the 4.2 measurement) it would still be 10,000 times weaker than the Tsar bomb which is the biggest nuke evar built.

That is what I was thinking. If it was a six party talk, NK wouldn't be able to freely demand directly what it wants from the US.

Go here and dial up about a 3KT blast on your favorite city. As you will see the effects would be minimal, this is not the city destroying nuke from the movies.

EDIT @ preslove 1 kiloton = 2,000,000 pound of TNT...
