So, so very true. Yet in reality, there is no solution. In general, countries do not give up their autonomy to another. Now, I would argue that the whole of the EU 15 are moving that way, but they are an exception.

No, what the UN does NEXT will prove whether or not it has a set. They warned him, he did it anyway, now they have to take action.

I hope they do, but I'm not gonna hold my breath.

Please, the UN is not exactly known for having a pair. At times they take a stronger stance, but only when there is an overwhelming majority and overwhelming power.

Why do I have a feeling they're going to sit and stall for several more months before taking any type of action towards N. Korea? IMHO, the UN isn't worth a damn and their statements or whatever it is to scare people into thinking they will be hurt by the UN and their actions seem pointless. It seems like N. Korea realy doesn't give a crap about what will happen to them sanction wise. For some strange reason I don't really think he needs or is asking for all this attention just because. There must be some reason. Perhaps he is just truly demented?

They warned the Indians and they launched a nuke anyway. See anything happens to the Indians? Nothing

Well, I'm guessing the section where the line goes back and forth really far means something big happened.

So let me get this straight. We go knocking on Saddam's door claiming that he's building nukes (which he wasn't), NK had a free pass to make their own.

Interrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrresting.

um, jump in squigly lines=seismic activity. I don't know what to reference it against, but I would assume it means that at the very least they detonated a large bomb of some sort.

Or will the Japanese reaction be to beef up conventional military capability instead?

Considering the new PM is a conservative, I highly doubt they will just roll over and continue business as usual wrt Dear Leader Kim.

If and when confirmation comes that NK atomic devices are missile-launchable, the Japanese public is going to be in a REAL tizzy.

Japan has no need to develope a nuclear weapon. If Japan were ever attacked with nuclear weapons, the US would respond in kind. Japan has the use of nuclear weapons without all the downsides (being responsible, fear from other countries, cost, etc).

You are probably right, but I am working on the basis of assuming that acquisition of nuclear capability is not a wholly rational decision on the part of the leaders of nation-states.

Considering how many times they have been actually used in a war, and the current phobia of one being used again, I consider nuclear weapons to be a somewhat limited weapon, mostly useful to prevent the complete and utter annihilation of your state by conventional means but verboten in any other circumstance.

True, but Japan is considered to be rather rational. Likely all that would be necessary is for the leaders of the two countries to call eachother up. Japan says "hey, we are thinking about announcing we have nukes in response", to which the US replies "no need, we guarentee that we will launch them for you if ever needed."

The only way it would get to the US is if they put it on a plane and threw it out a door. That doesn't make it safe in the area though. This blows.

they will never launch it anywhere, because if they do the US would retaliate and NK is no more.

But whats scary is what that other thread mentioned: NK sells/gives the nuke to a third party, so the US wont know who detonated it.

btw any other parties confirmed NK's actions??
