January 13, 2005 - In an interview with the Kyoto Shimbun today, Nintendo's president Satoru Iwata said that the successor to GameCube, codenamed Revolution, would bring about a "paradigm shift."

A paradigm shift, eh? Am I the only one that gets the Oh teh nooooos feeling?

He indicated once more that Revolution could be a machine targeted specifically at the mainstream audience, saying that if something looks too complicated it could alienate players

Could this be a step toward apple's simplicity style? mmm

I don't know about any paradigm shift, but they'd better catch up and embrace some real online capability.

I love my cube, but I won't be buy another nintendo console until they change there stance on broadband multiplayer support. I read a article last summer stating that nintendo was intent on focusing on there current demographic and they don't want/need online play.

I sure hope they have change there stance.

Excuse my rant here for a moment. If you are a fanboy, please exit thread now.

I loved my NES. I even loved the SNES. But let me tell you, after that it went downhill. Nintendo needs to get their head out of their collective ass and stop this, "lets try something unique" method. Your N64 was garbage, your Cube was garbage, and I have no doubt your "revolution" will take a paradigm shift to the trash can. Sony's 32-bit system brought the smackdown on the N64 by using new technology that, OMG, worked better. Not to mention they made probably the nicest controller design on the market at the time, which was so good they used it again for their 2nd console. What did Nintendo do? Went from bad to worse. The N64 controller was too big and you couldn't use all the buttons without 3 hands. The new controller is ugly, cheap feeling, and has the wierdest most uncomfortable button setup ever. And it's clearly designed for kids. You don't support DVDs like your competitors, smart.

Unique is not better. Different is not better. Reinventing something is not better. Streamlining, quality, listening to customers, that's how you get better. NES beat the Atari easy, it's not a hard decision to switch. Up until the N64, they didn't have much competition. Dreamcast and Playstation layed the smackdown, and it's been downhill since. The DS might be pretty good, but the PSP is better IMO. Maybe it's just me, but it seems like one company is more interested in me while the other is more interested in being "unique".

I have to disagree. I feel like the Gamecube is one of the best values out there. No, it doesn't play DVDs and no, it doesn't offer online play. But what it does offer are terrific, original games that you can't get on any other system. Metroid, Zelda, Mario Kart and Smash Bros. are all great. In fact, I play the GC more than my PS2.

Bright colors and easy controls do not make the Gamecube a "kiddie system," although it certain does have appeal with parents and a younger demographic. Is it competitive with Sony? Yes and no. I don't think it targets the same types of gamers as Sony, and frankly, that's a smart move for Nintendo this round. Once they recognized that Microsoft was going to attack Sony directly, they backed away and established a nice little niche for themselves -- younger gamers and casual young adult gamers.

Your attacks on the N64 are a bit inaccurate. If you recall, Nintendo raised the bar with their controller at the time, which, while large and a bit strange looking, offered true analog control. Sony went back and redesigned the Playstation controller to create the Dual Shock (which was a great design). But the advent of analog control can all be attributed to Nintendo's innovation, not Sony's.

I hope that Nintendo continues to innovate, even if they decide to remain a niche player. Microsoft and Sony have made excellent systems, and I'm certain that their next offerings will be even more spectacular. However I would argue that different and unique ARE better. Innovation is what redefines expectations and pushes the industry forward. I don't see how you can criticize a company for trying something new.

Are you serious about Dreamcast laying the smack down? I bought one, it was bad, plain and simple.

I enjoyed my n64 much more than I ever enjoyed my playstation or dreamcast. [I'm sure many will agree with me there]

Gamecube isn't amazing, and no internet is teh suxxors.

It's obviously targeted towards kids, get over it. Do you want mario with his pants down or something?

The dreamcast was 10x what the n64 was, it even did things not even the playstation did. It is perhaps the coolest system sega ever came out with, and MANY people were disappointed that it didn't work out. The controls were good, the games were good, the system used better technology. If given the choice, hands down I would choose either the PS1 or DC over the n64. Heck, I'd choose a good ol' NES over the N64.

True true. The Dreamcast was a console truly worthy of being successful in its own right. Just damn sega for having a horrible marketing dept...I noticed that things went down for the DC after their mass media blast of Space Channel 5 where Icould not watch a commercial break during a show without being bombarded by an ad for that game atlesat twice~ at that time they should have stayed more convesrvative till they have cash reserves to play around.

But the Dreamcast was 10x what the 64 was to me. The PSX is 10x was tthe 64 to me~ between teh DC and PSX I couldn't decide...

I remember when the 64 came out I spent THREE DAYS trying to find one to rent from Block buster. I finally got one by keeping my dad drive back and forth to the store for me...we rented it for three days and I had a BLAST playing Wayne Gretsky's 3d hockey! BUT...the controller was hard to hold, and i noticed the analogue was wearing down pretty fast!

When I came back and sat to really chosose over a Psx or N64 a few years later...I played the 64 and that excitement in the games was never really there for me~ games o the PSX was getting and hooking me like crazy (Final Fantasy 7 and Coolboarders2 [which is better than 1080] anyone?)

To me, a loyal NES fan (who when I was three thought that all games were "nintendo" games) and SNES fan I was so uninspired by the 64 after that initial rush wore off...whereas to this day I have a lot of fun playing games on the PSX.

Um, marketing was not Sega's problem... the problem was the fact that games for the dreamcast were easy to copy.

The bigger the crap, the bigger the hype. Every game system says this same thing.

Dreamcast was an EXTREMELY powerful system... just had ZERO game support... best game was soulcalibur.. and thats about it...
IF Sega had really opened up outside devs to write software that system would have been a contender....
problem was there were no games =/

The dreamcast was too loud, I could hear it spinning the cd from another room.

Uhh, what exactly does he mean? What's so complicated about sticking a cartridge or a cd into a console then clicking a button? Or is he talking about the games? If so, thanks for wanting to dumb down console games even further, but I'll be sticking to my PC.

I love my GC! I think its the best console Nintendo ever had! I have every console since pong and play the GC the most. I love my cube. I hope Nintendo's next console is backwards compatible with the GC.

N64 + Goldeneye and Zelda64 = the awesome. I bought the n64 because of goldeneye. Although nowadays I play PC a lot, the social factor of a multiplayer console game is hard to reproduce unless you get a lan party, even then, it's much more inconvenient and it's hard for everyone to see everyone else to laugh at each other. Although an online option would be great for the next console, I'd probably play it mostly for multiplayer with friends, and primarily turn to the PC for online multiplayer gaming.

I heard rumor the controller is supposed to be movable on 3 planes, x-y-z. Something like tha analog stick moves on another, deeper point. And its gyro scopic bouncing back to its center.

I agree with you man, but the Dreamcast didn't do any smacking around. I think it was a great console but it was just bad timing and bad marketing. It just came out too close the PS2 release. Most people didn't buy the Dreamcast because the PS2 was right around the corner. And most people just waited for the PS2 sadly enough. I wish the DC did better, but one thing I didn't like was the controller. It had ALOT of room for improvement. But I'd rate it WAY above the N64 and GC controllers. ;)

Dear Nintendo,

Online gaming is not a "revolution." Dreamcast had broadband back when your spaceheater was sucking at its developer's teat.

God help you if you try to claim an RJ45 port on a flashy new sh!tbox will be a Revolution of the Gaming Industry.

Love,

- M4H, who gave his Cube to his little brother for Christmas and bought an Xbox instead.
