First Wii modchip reviewed!

This is much more legit - I'm still going to say the Wiinja is a scam.

I've done lots of PS2 modchip installs, so if anyone is interested in having me mod their Wii, I'd be happy to help. The Cyclowiz looks like it'd take me all of 5 minutes to install.

What exactly are the modchips - EEPROMS, microcontrollers, FPGAs, full/semi-custom VLSI, etc?

I don't know the technical name, but I used to have a PIC programmer that I would program playstation chips with bck in the day. They may be called PIC chips but I'm not sure.

It looks like the Wiinja is basically this chip with a few more legs, so once the code gets released on the net, you iwll see these things VERY cheap, since blank chips are about $1. However I'm sure it will take some time to get out on the net, considering there won't be much money in the market once it does.

I just hope this doesn't turn the Wii into another Dreamcast :(

I don't think piracy killed the Dreamcast. I think Sony killed the Dreamcast. And the Dreamcast didn't even require a modchip to play burned games. PS2 and Xbox did just fine with modchips available.

Looks very cool,....

They state it's " Stealth " but could Nintendo do an upgrade via 24connect and detect this at some point?
Like,... once they know what they're looking for?

Piracy didn't help much. It was a combination of piracy and the ps2. It was really Sega's fault for not at least trying to input some kind of security module that wouldn't allow backups to be played. Like you said, didn't even require a modchip. Ah well.

In other news, is soldering hard to learn?

Not really hard. Go to Radio Shack and get a 15 watts soldering iron and some lead free solder. Pratice it on a dead PCB or Motherboard with some cooper wires.

Nope. The article states that the data sent to the CPU is essentially the same.

I'm holding out for a homebrew chip. Did you guys see the dude who made wireless NES/SNES controllers for his Wii? I'm really interested in doing it, but there are so few virtual games available that it doesn't really seem worth it yet. Link to his site:

Maybe if you read the date of the original post, you'd realize that.

So I installed my Wiinja Deluxe last night.

Taking the Wii apart is definitely a process. The thing about the deluxe chip is that is has an extra wire that must be soldered to the motherboard, where as the other 5 wires (and most chips only have these 5 wires) are soldered to the dvdrom.

And let me tell you. It's very tediuos to take the wii apart to the motherboard, and even at that point, the 1 wire that I Had to solder to the motherboard was a PITA to actually get soldered, but I eventually did it.

After about 2 hours of taking apart/soldering/putting back together my Wii it was time to test it out, and right away I booted up with a back-up of zelda that I made of my copy.

And sure enough, it loaded up just fine :)

Now I have to grab some of the homebrew stuff, and apparently there is a DVD player out there (or in the works atleast).
