Wow I was pretty surprised to see this from Nintendo. I do wish they did this with a box that could play Snes and Game Cube as well. I'm sure the hardware could..

With all the retro stuff out this would be a good choice..

pretty solid list of games. interesting that it's not mike tyson's punchout.

It isn't the Mike Tyson version because they only had a time limited rights deal with Mike Tyson. Nintendo had the option of extending it, but declined to do so as Mike was starting to get a little crazy and Nintendo wanted to distance themselves from him (they wanted to maintain their "family friendly" image).

OR.......

You could just buy these games on the Wii U, play them today, and still have all the functionality like Netflix and Amazon and other stuff.

This would be preferable but Nintendo charges $5 a game for NES and charges you again for every device you want it on ($5 for Zelda on 3DS, $5 more for same game on Wii U, "upgrade" fee to play it on NX etc). They're charging $2 a game with this gimmick.

Not interested at all myself. Nintendo just furthers my belief that they aren't getting new ideas to push. They didn't develop Pokemon Go, they offloaded that job, and it's sort of just a Pokemon-skinned version of the dev's previous game, Ingress. Now, they're pushing games from 30 years ago because they can't be bothered to do something like building a solid online network. They're now charging folks for an official offering of what people have done with emulators for, what, 15 years?

So this is basically Nintendo's official version of the "Sega Genesis/Atari 2600 with 80 games!" little boxes you see in every retailer around Christmas time.

Cool. I've always thought Nintendo has easily the best catalog of games from the 8-to-16 bit era.
If they did something like this with the SNES and some of the best games from that era, I'd preorder the thing. :)

OR...

For those of us that already have a new console that does all that, you have a $60 option instead of spending hundreds +cost of games on a WiiU

Shoot an emulator is free...and you don't have to use the uncomfortable candy bar controller lol. I hate that thing anymore.

I feel the same way, but I guess there's a market for these things just based on some of the comments here. Heck, even some of my friends on social media who aren't gamers are hyping it. To me it's strange, I lived through the NES, SNES, Genesis etc eras and played the games. I've gone back to play them on emulators and still occasionally do and I don't get any joy in holding the square NES controller at all so this holds no appeal to me. Sure people claim nostalgia. I could too. That is until I realize how terrible the controls, hit detection, AI etc really was back then and how even $10 indie games do it better these days fundamentally.

Must have!!!! OMG!!!!
They wont look/sound as good as they do on the console itself!!!

I had an ATARI FLASHBACK unit... PIECE OF GARBAGE!! -- The games werent @ all the same......

I would rather get my Atari 2600 console running again so I can play my cartridges I have had since the 80s! (MUCH BETTER QUALITY ON THE ORIGINAL CONSOLE)

This is my worry. It being a Nintendo product though gives me some measure of hope. They tend not to ship junk hardware.

I do admit I wish the controllers were wireless. Seems like a requirement nowadays and wouldn't detract from the nostalgia/fun at all.

I imagine they will sell them separately, after the fact, for a pretty penny. Or someone will.

So I couldn't see it there, are these original resolution or HD remakes, or what? Sorry if this has been posted, but I did not see it. I may be interested in this if they will look ok. Would definitely want a wireless controller too.

they should release a new gamecube right guys?

have it upscale all the games to 1080p 60fps although im guessing the latter would be impossible without an actual code rewrite in a lot of cases

Seems like a good idea in theory. I do some traveling and something like this that I can hook into a hotel room tv easily will be nice. My only concern is if the controller will be wired and if so it will likely come with some annoyingly short cord meant for the days when we used to sit with our faces planted in the tv.

Also wish this had rc pro am as previously mentioned but am missing Double Dribble on that list as well.

This just means Nintendo doesn't have jack squat to release for the holidays. What a joke

pretty solid list of games. interesting that it's not mike tyson's punchout.

nintendo sees everyone else making millions off of putting old content out so they are getting a piece of the pie. good for them. although, this is definitely better than just putting out the exact old games in "hd" on the new consoles. at least you get OG hardware with this.

Not sure how that's interesting. They changed it to Punch-Out!! ft. Mr. Dream back in the NES days and their reasons still apply today (no license and negative association). I recall a friend who was desperate to get the game around 1990 but his parents would not buy it for him due to Mike Tyson's rape conviction. When Nintendo let the license lapse and changed it, he was finally able to get the game. Obviously, they weren't the only ones.

Since then Tyson has gotten in even more controversy. Unless they plan to add ear-biting to the game, it's entirely expected and uninteresting that they didn't use the Tyson version.

smart

Instead of trying to keep up with the big dogs and failing, they're finally playing on the strength of their classic games.

Haven't they always done this despite endless criticism for it?

I didn't see any mention of it, so it's probably not there, but I was hoping for some kind of save state system like the emulators have. It would be nice, as not all of the old games had a good save system.

Yes, it has save/resume for every game. This is like a "Best of Virtual Console" collection packaged like an Atari Flashback 6 or something.

I do admit I wish the controllers were wireless. Seems like a requirement nowadays and wouldn't detract from the nostalgia/fun at all.

I do wonder if it might have wireless Wii Remote support for wireless. Those controller ports are the Nunchuk/Classic Controller ports from a standard Wii Remote.

Sign me up! It's going to look terrible on my projector

I don't think so at all. It's HDMI.

Here's to hoping it has good emulation.

Same here. Nintendo's been making emulators for a long time but I always find issues they miss. On the Wii Virtual Console, for example:
The ending of Ninja Gaiden is glitched. The castle pieces that fall off are duplicated leaving a fully-intact castle left behind.
The swinging vines in Donkey Kong Country are glitched. They keep swinging when you pause the game, making your character snap to a different location when you unpause.

Nostalgia.

Many of us grew up playing this slew of games. For $60 cheap/easy way to have some memories rekindled and have some fun.

That being said. I wish there was RC Pro Am. That game was addicting as hell

That would be cool but Microsoft owns Rare. :(

I understand the nostalgia point, but all of these games are already available via so many other methods.

It just reminds me of those Sega plug and play system that you see sitting in the Kmart discount bin for $9.99.

Uhh... duh?
They're even available on the original cartridges.

I wasn't going to get up and move the couch to get the last third in the pic. ;)

Uhh, by that logic they offloaded Pokemon to Game Freak from the start.

They aren't pushing games from that era "because they can't be bothered to do something like building a solid online network." They've ALWAYS pushed their classics and people have always been critical of it. Obviously, enough of the public cares about their classic stuff because they keep doing it and we keep rewarding them for it (loved my Classic NES Edition GBA SP).

Your last statement is particularly funny. They have been officially charging us for the same games you could emulate 20 years ago ALL ALONG. Are you completely oblivious? Even if you only count emulation and not re-releases (Super Mario All*Stars, Super Mario Deluxe, etc), there's Virtual Console, Classic NES Series GBA, eReader NES series, Zelda Collector's Edition, Zelda Ocarina of Time Master Quest, and so many more... heck, multiple N64 games had NES and Game Boy emulation for classic games.

Shoot an emulator is free...and you don't have to use the uncomfortable candy bar controller lol. I hate that thing anymore.

Emulators are free for classic games in the same way classic movies are free. For some reason you people always have to chime in when classic games are re-released but it really is just like telling people to pirate a classic movie when a reprint or collection is announced. I'm always puzzled when I see people acting like they are proud of pirating when literally ANYONE can do it. It doesn't make you special. We aren't impressed.

I wish this would come with Contra and Super Tecmo Bowl.

I will be buying this.

I'm sure it will be expandable or they will have a follow-up just like the Atari Flashback 6 or whatever the latest one is.

it's pretty telling how un-exciting the current gen is when this forum is completely dead now a days then an NES with 30 games gets announced and the thread is more active than the e3 threads were during the key notes.

Nah, it's just that we're all old and full of nostalgia. Current gen is still great and exciting, but who doesn't love to relive some memories?

I'm not sure what you were expecting, or why you were expecting these features at all...
The only logical features for their ecosystem and for them to continue to make money would have been connected to the Internet. This way you can buy digital games and download them like their last two systems.

How is that difficult? If you want to go retro go all in..

we all do but you can do that right now if you really wanted to. my buddies and i have random "old school game days" throughout the year where we do just this and bring nintendo's and SNES and play old games.

Then why does the Atari Flashback 6 exist?

As you already pointed out about their last two systems, they already have all that. Also, Virtual Console exists on the 3DS, so that's three Internet-connected platforms.

How is that difficult? If you want to go retro go all in..

Obviously it's not "so difficult" since they've already done that. This is tangental. If anything, they are going to want to sell a mini-NES 2, mini-NES 3, etc, just like the Atari Flashback series. Having a fixed set of games makes sense in that context.

I almost expect a mini-Famicom and mini NES-101 and such too. The mini-Fami for the US market can have games that were never released here, like Super Mario Bros 2 (J)/For Super Players/The Lost Levels, Earthbound Beginnings, Devil World, Mr. Gimmick, etc. They can make one for collectors who can't afford the particularly expensive titles like Mega Man, Mega Man 5, Contra Force, DuckTales 2, etc. Unicorns like Stadium Events, Nintendo World Championships, and similar would probably never happen for other reasons (Power Pad game that's the same as World Class Track Meet, Tetris license required, etc). Some of those expensive Taito games like Power Blade II, Little Samson, etc but anything with an additional license (Flintstones Dinosaur Peak, Jetsons Cogswell's Caper) likely wouldn't. Bucky O'Hare, Batman, New Ghostbusters II (currently EU/JP only), etc have the same problem.
