Watch the video.

The video didn't have religous overtones.

It was a man who built his castle of greatness for his one true love and now watches it crumble.

Cash - love of his wife
Trent - love of addiction/pain

Both songs and video's still bring a tear to my eye.

Johnny Cash - I Hung My Head

Go listen to it. It's a cover of Sting. It has a similar feel to Hurt. BTW, this is another instance of the cover being better than the original.
