i've heard both and i think the cash version is much better. maybe i need to see the video, i didn't think crown of thorns was religious, just painful. *shrug*

And this isn't going against Cash, I love his early work. This "cover" album just wasn't up to his caliber, of course his age was probably the main contributing factor. And his version of Hurt is the worst on the album.

uh, bridge over troubled water with fiona apple was better?

Watch the video.

If the retarded NiN song I just heard on the radio is what Trent has left to offer then I have to say that regardless of how much time passes.... Cash >>> Trent!

BTW, what other modern music has Cash covered? I had no idea he covered Rusty Cage. Must find it!

Crown of thorns does have a catchier ring than crown of sh!t; seriously how would you do that? It would be like a mud cake dribbling down your face; not a very pleasant image.

It distorts the whole meaning of the damn song. That's what's wrong with it.

He took it and made it his, more power to him. I highly doubt there was too much "meaning" in Trent's version lol. You can read into it what you will, I can do the same for a Britney song. Hell Cash's might not have too much meaning either, it might I dunno. All of these annoying goth fvcks trying to sound profound, but Cash will always be the true man in black.

The Visigoths and modern music have nothing in common, except for maybe the band Therion. How many actually know of how the poor peasant Goth farmers sacked Rome?

The mere fact that Cash covered the song is a testament to Reznor's greatness.

no, id say its a testament to how "creative" producers and executives can be and how "entertainers" love making an easy buck.

not to knock on cash. hes one of my favorite artists and i grew up listening to his stuff. a true badass.

btw: i prefer nin to cash, but rusty cage was actually cool, IMO.

Cool, but I said nothing of visigoths.

Johnny Cash is the man...

.. in black 🙂

The NIN version is definitely interesting, but Johnny Cash turns it into a real song. I also think he puts real emotion into the song that can easily be related to (especially with the video) as compared to the overly dark NIN take.

Hurt is SUPPOSED to be dark. It fits into the concept of the album. I thought Johnny Cash's version was OK, but he really should have mentioned it was a cover on the radio/tv or something. It's sad that people think the NIN version is a cover.

As for his version of Rusty Cage... Ugh... its horrible.

Hurt is a song he can cover, hes just too old and feeble sounding to carry a hard rock song.

His cover of Hurt was so sad because it was actually true for him, and it was sort of numbing to see an old wrinkly man talking about everything leaving him behind.

Not true. 'Mad World' by Gary Jules is better than the Tear for Fears version.

Stevie Wonder's cover of For Once In My Life
Jackson Browne's cover of Stay
Aretha Franklin's cover of Respect
Rod Stewart's cover of Downtown Train
Elvis's cover of Hound Dog

Alright, buddy. It's listed on the CD, and it's up to the radio dj to mention if it's a cover. Not to mention, he died within a year of its release.

The NIN version....the ORIGINAL is definitely interesting, but Johnny Cash does a good job of singing someone else?s song.

I've seen this song done live by NIN that?s emotion, you have no clue what went into the writing of that song but you say Cash puts real emotion into it....Trent put the emotion into the song Cash just copied that and made it his own

Don?t get me wrong I like Cash

All in all its Karaoke when covered, I?ve seen a ton of nobodies stand in for the real singers and pump emotion into their performance...it still will never be as good as the real thing.

Trent gets no respect...
It took Cash for some of you to even recognize Trents brilliance.

Oh god I just listened to the Cash version of Rusty Cage again. DONT DOWNLOAD IT. Its horrible. Hes just freaking talking. Theres no solos. No emotion. Nothing. Horrible.

I think some people are just nostalgic about this.

God this song is almost like a joke cover.

Brilliant songwriter/lyricist, but I don't whip out NIN songs when I want to hear music.

Johnny Cash's cover is better as a song I would want to listen to while cruising down the street.

Dude if you listen to that song while your cruising... I don't know...

I only listen to that song when I'm morbidly depressed or something.

I always have six CDs in my changer... five constantly change, but that sixth slot always contains a Johnny Cash CD 🙂

You can't top Sam Cooke's original but Gavin DeGraw's cover of 'A Change Gonna Come' is a great one.

Funny you should mention that....I like The Band's version of that song. However, it is not better than Sam Cooke.
