I disabled the chaintech card in device manager and the problem persisted... do you still think it might be the issue?

If you disabled the sound card, then probably not. It sounds like it's definately a game issue and not system related...well...a hardware problem anyhow.

As much as it's a PITA, I've sometimes solved weird game problems like that by uninstalling/deleting the game folder, and re-installing. I know it works with a 9800 Pro fine...

You mean you played without sound and it still hung (or was the game using your onboard sound - which is even more crash prone) ?

Hey, I did shudder at the fact you have a Via board earlier, didn't I? :p;)

Yeah... I needed an AGP board though, and I had read so many good things about Soltek and the AT review was good, so I figured I'd be safe :p

It's not your board. Via's chipsets since the KT266A have been solid...

Also, I doubt it's your board. Via's got a bad rep, but their chipsets over the past few years have been solid...not the fastest, but solid. If it's a problem with one game only, I wouldn't suspect the motherboard unless you are looking for a reason to upgrade.

I had my first copy of FarCry running fine on my old system

same 9800pro
Epox 8RDA+
2500+ barton
TBSC (I may have had it running on the Chaintech card too... I don't remember)
350watt enermax
etc.

:(

I'm going to try installing it on one of my other harddrives and see if it makes any difference...

I realize that, I was just messing with him because I've had bad experiences with Via in the (admittedly distant) past....:p

Although my personal choice for an AGP board would have been an nForce3 board of some sort....but then again I am a self-proclaimed Nvidia fanboy (as far as motherboards are concerned anyway :p)

I know you said you disabled the sound card, but the problem I had was solved by disabling a certain audio feature in the game. I wish I could remember which one....it was a box that I unchecked...

Just ran the game real quick to see what audio options there were...

Was it hardware mixing or EAX2.0 maybe? The other stuff didn't look like it would have much of an effect (or so I would think, but then again what do I know...)

FarCry was the only really 3d game I've installed so far since I've gotten my new system (and this was only yesterday).

I played like half an hour of Doom3 though without any issues. I've also played rollercoaster tycoon without any issues :p

Oh, and whoever designed rollercoaster tycoon was a moron. It uses 100% of my CPU and the requirements are:
Operating System: Windows 95/98
Processor: Pentium 90
Memory: 16 MB RAM
Video: 1MB SVGA Card

Oh, I agree 100%. Since the NF2, I wouldn't buy anything other than an Nvidia chipset myself.

I had nothing hardware checked. I had it on stereo output.

I'll go in again and mess around with the settings.

(I'll be back after I have to restart ;))

No, it was an effect of sorts....reverb or something. Was a green block that I needed to "uncheck".

DOPPLER EFFECT.....

Synth's got it....

That was what caused havoc on my system before...

Didn't matter what sound options I chose...until I disabled that.

Hmmm...doppler effect. Reminds me of good times in BF:V!

Could be.

let me clarify - you NEED a windoZe machine for gaming, you NEED a linux machine for everything else, you NEED at least two machines running to be able to browse WHILE playing games, etc....
