Ok, I'm going to ask night crew:
Can anyone else think of something to try for my FarCry problem?
The problem is from anywhere between 10 seconds to 5 minutes into a FarCry load, the video will freeze. The sound will play for a couple seconds and then freeze up too. Then I can either do a hard restart or about 30 seconds later it will restart on its own or I'll get a bunch of garbled video and then it will restart. Also, the game plays great until this random and sudden freeze.
Ok, specs are
3200+ A64 (running stock on stock HS/F @ good temps)
9800pro 128mb
Soltek K8T800pro
2x512mb corsair value select
430watt Seasonic
Lots o harddrives
NEC DVD burner
Chaintech AV-710
I have tried
Turning off fast-writes for the videocard
Changing to 4x AGP mode
Installing a different versions of FarCry
Patched FarCry to latest version
reinstalled VIA 4-in-1s
reinstalled video drivers
swapped out 9800pro for my gf's 9500pro
(3d mark 03 score = 5960, which is right on from what I can tell)
ran each of my ram sticks individually
(ram is memtest stable, prime95 stable)
Took out several harddrives to try to alleviate power draw
Powered the 9800pro off an AT powersupply while the system ran on the Seasonic
Put in slot cooler below the 9800pro to vent out hot air
Slighly overvolted ram and CPU
Disabled sound
Tried different resolutions, video settings
Changed Windows Swap file to a different harddrive
Ok... I think that's everything....
Any idea?![]()

I had a similar problem when I was running the Chaintech sound card. IIRC, I needed to disable a certain sound feature in the game...in the audio properties. I'm trying to remember what setting it was and I'm drawing a blank...

Hmm...It ran okay w/ my 9600 pro (haven't tried it on my current rig). I did have big problems w/ my 9600 pro and the via chipset. It might be your borad itself![]()

I'm kind of suspecting it's my board too.
If nothing else, this is a good reason to upgrade to NF4 and a PCI-e videocard.

I disabled the chaintech card in device manager and the problem persisted... do you still think it might be the issue?

Hey, I did shudder at the fact you have a Via board earlier, didn't I?![]()
