NIE Terrorism Report Released

The Office of the Director of National Intelligence has released portions of the National Intelligence Estimate that has been characterized as saying that the Iraq war has increased Muslim extremism. This report was prepared by the administration and can be seen at National Intelligence Estimate

As of Tuesday afternoon when the report was leaked, the Web site was VERY slow.

(AP) WASHINGTON A declassified government intelligence report says the war in Iraq has become a "cause celebre" for Islamic extremists, breeding deep resentment of the U.S. that is likely to get worse before it gets better.

In the bleak report, released Tuesday on President Bush's orders, the nation's most veteran analysts conclude that despite serious damage to the leadership of al-Qaida, the threat from Islamic extremists has spread both in numbers and in geographic reach.

Actually what bush said the report said was FOS:


the report said:

_ The increased role of Iraqis in opposing al-Qaida in Iraq might lead the terror group's veteran foreign fighters to focus their efforts outside the country.

_ While Iran and Syria are the most active state sponsors of terror, many other countries will be unable to prevent their resources from being exploited by terrorists.

_ The underlying factors that are fueling the spread of the extremist Muslim movement outweigh its vulnerabilities. These factors are entrenched grievances and a slow pace of reform in home countries, rising anti-U.S. sentiment and the Iraq war.


Keep note of this last sentence, which show's Bush's public response to be yet another lie.

Virtually all assessments of the current situation were bad news. The report's few positive notes were couched in conditional terms, depending on successful completion of difficult tasks ahead for the U.S. and its allies. In one example, analysts concluded that more responsive political systems in Muslim nations could erode support for jihadist extremists.

Bush and his top advisers have said the formerly classified assessment of global terrorism supported their arguments that the world is safer because of the war. But more than three pages of stark judgments warning about the spread of terrorism contrasted with the administration's glass-half-full declarations.

"If this trend continues, threats to U.S. interests at home and abroad will become more diverse, leading to increasing attacks worldwide," the document says. "The confluence of shared purpose and dispersed actors will make it harder to find and undermine jihadist groups."

The democrats wanted to discuss this document and GUESS WHAT, the republicans OUTRIGHT REFUSED and voted against a discussion! We are SOOOO SAFE NOW! MMMHMM!

LOL, The Dems do, Bush does not. If he wanted it declassified it would be done, it's his call. But in your world white is black and Iraq is going great. They could declassify almost all of it with no national security issues, those who wrote it and read it have already said so.

CAPITOL HILL (AP) - The top Republican and Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee are calling on the White House to declassify a high-level intelligence assessment on global terror.

The review reportedly states that the war in Iraq has contributed to global terrorism.

Senator Pat Roberts, a Kansas Republican, says the American people should be able to see a public version of the report and draw their own conclusions about its contents. Robert says media reports have so far given a "false impression."

Senator Jay Rockefeller, the committee's top Democrat, says releasing the report would "contribute greatly to the public debate" on counterterrorism policies.

The report distills the thinking of senior U.S. intelligence analysts working throughout the nation's 16 spy agencies. Some Democrats are calling for hearings on the report's findings.

It is comical, yet extremely sad, that so many of the Bush faithful turn to such dishonest arguments and diversions as a first resort. I assume that must be the best they can offer, that they have no legitimate points to support their feckless leader.

Maybe you missed the memo. Our actions are spreading terrorism further. Doing nothing may not decrease terrorism, but what we are doing isn't decreasing terrorism either. In fact it appears to be having the opposite effect.

That's not my speculation, that's what is actually in that document you apparently didn't bother to read.

Got any links to support your claim? I just checked half-a-dozen sites. None claimed Bush declassified the entire report. Most said something similar to the Washington Post article, dated Wednesday: "The Bush administration yesterday released portions of a classified intelligence estimate that says the global jihadist movement is growing and being fueled by the war in Iraq even as it becomes more decentralized, making it harder to identify potential terrorists and prevent attacks."

The only possible exception is Fox, which is a bit ambiguous in it's wording. Nonetheless, I don't see where even Fox claims Bush has declassified the whole report.

No straw man here. Just read through the "discussions" the last couple months and you can find plenty who imply quite clearly that if we just walked away everything would be so much better. Those terrorists would all go home!
