I don't think they were handicapped that much. They were making close to 1000hp out of a naturally aspirated 3.0l V10. I think that's pretty impressive actually.

BMW P83 - 900+ horses, 19K+ revs, under 200 pounds...

Personally I like traditional V8s, but...if it doesn't sound ricey...

The engine is likely to be extremely high-revving, perhaps climbing to a near-Formula One-class 10,000 RPMs, suggested one source involved in the project.

I'm not really getting why GM would move to a TT ~3.0L V8. Good possibility of it weighing more than an LS3 or LS7 with the turbos, plumbing, intercooler, and lighweight nature of the LS series engines. I'd think it would be more difficult to package everything under the hood for the same reasons. Probably won't get any better gas mileage. It would be more expensive meaning lower profit margins (yeah right) or higher price. Is GM just trying to grab some of the Euro buyers who want high-revving engines??

Don't get me wrong, I think more options are better and FI from the factory is great for modders, it just doesn't make a lot of sense IMO.

Mileage, emissions, and power

Just think of what the enthusiasts will be able to do with so little!

youtube lincoln ls exhaust, that's only a 3.9 liter so unless they go single plane (which they might) it could sound pretty good

it was even more crazy in the 80s, turbo F1 engines were pushing close to 1500bhp!!!

technologically it's a whole different direction that requires a lot of investment. not saying it won't happen, but i wouldn't be surprised to find an evolution of the LSx rather than a brand new engine in the next corvette.

sounds like they want to do BOTH.

I think its cool, and will help shut up alot of critics that call the vette a dinosaur for using a OHV pushrod engine, not that i care, its about the ends not the means!

but who doesnt want to hear a TT 3L V8 spin to 10K.

The rumors have been floating about for a long time now. Would be interesting to see if something radical comes out for the C7, but I doubt anything to extreme.

Yeah, WTF? Long stroke for Ferrari and Lambo?

I'll wait for another article to confirm.

The author doesn't know what he is talking about...

For approximately 3.0L (or 3.2L) the engine dimensions would be -
80.5 mm bore x 73.5 mm stroke V8
80.5 mm bore x 78.5 mm stroke V8

So both are over-square rather than long-stroke.

Plus 125 BHP per litre isn't much for a turbo engine...

Yup the Lambo V10's are undersquare 84.5 mm x 92.8 mm (Source).

Ferrari's tend to be oversquare, for example the 458 is officially 94 mm x 81 mm (Source).

i think it'd be awesome too. i'm just sayin ;)

IMO, the LSx engines demonstrate why OHV is dare i say superior to OHC from most engineering standpoints (unless you want a rev-happy engine, in which case OHC is the way to go). yes, they are large displacement, but physically they are smaller in size, lighter, have more torque, and are more power dense (power/engine volume or power/engine weight).

just depends on your goals, i guess, but any true auto-enthusiast would be a fool to criticize OHV as being "old" or "antiquated"

I also think that there is a lot that can be done with the LSx engine to increase fuel economy and power output. The other area for improvement is a 7 or 8 speed sequential transmission and the aluminum frame that has only been on the Z06 and ZR1.

The engine is perfect. Maybe not for the Corvette, but... think about this...

GM should revive the Fiero. No matter what badge the put on it, but revive the small 2-seater mid-engine car, and shove this imaginary 3.X liter turbo V8 into it.

That should shut up "traditionalist" Corvette fans.

I honestly don't believe this story has a lot of credibility other than the likelihood that the corvette engine will be lower displacement and likely turbocharged in some way for the C7.

If it is high-revving...count me a fan already. I love high revving motors.

Chevy, if you do make this engine, please offer it in more practical coupe form that looks exactly like this:
