Newt Gingrich: Child labor laws 'truly stupid'

Ahh it was fun. Driving tractors for a 9 year old boy is fun no matter how you slice it.Like Star Wars machinery in real life. And I exaggerate. We'd go fishing at noon and fuck around plenty but we had many hrs of chores over 12 hours.

🙂 Hunting season (deer) just opened here this weekend. One of my coworkers has a farm. Some idiot hunters from the city managed to shoot a deer and couldn't figure out how to get the deer out of a ravine. They went to my coworker's farm to see if they could borrow a rope. They took a 4-wheeler and backed it up to the ravine and put a rope out to the deer. The unattended 4-wheeler rolled down into the ravine with the deer.

They returned to the farm seeking more help. Everyone else was out hunting, so she sent her 13 year old out to help them. He took some chains & drove a 100 HP tractor over to the ravine, hooked some chains onto the 4-wheeler, and pulled it right out. All the idiots couldn't believe that a little kid was operating a big tractor like that. (It's not their biggest tractor; and the kid operates bigger tractors.) Back at the trucks, the guy who shot the deer said "well, now all I have to do is figure out how to get the deer into the pickup." The kid grabbed the deer by the legs and swung it up and into the bed of the pickup (it was a smaller doe.)

Damn city boys I'm surprised they even found it. 😛

Kids tend to meet their expectations as long as they are not unreasonable. Been proven from math, to languages to working a farm and they learn real fast.

I have to agree. I worked when I was 15, but it was such a fucking hassle. I would have loved for it to be easier for me to get a job and make money, but now a days we're so inclined to keep children children.

We baby kids way too much in today's society

Really?

I think there must an exemption for farmers. I slaved 12 hour days at 9 on my grandparents farm when parents would dump us off there in summer "vacation." Every other year same deal.

My brother and I did the same thing at my uncle's hog farm. We alternated years with some of my other male cousins. It wasn't until years later we found out our parents would pay our uncle, who would then pay us like $200 at the end of the summer.

Funny thing, though, nearly all of us hated it at the time but all look back with very fond memories of it. In fact one of my cousins (a very wealthy MD) was furious when he learned my aunt and uncle sold off the farm to strangers when they took ill. He really wanted to buy it as a retreat.

But I suspect Newt never did that kind of work in his life and also doesn't see the any problem with child labor like they have in India. For a smart guy Newt doesn't have a lick of common sense (or decency) in his body.

Yep, more deregulation that'll work great just like it did for banks...

I could see loosening them, but child labor laws protect a class of people that can be very easily abused for money; extreme caution is needed when messing with them.

Is your point that pageants are an equivalent to child labor and teaches them to "grow up". Career pageant queens are anything but grown up...

Or are you confirming his point, my sarcasm detector is permanently broken.

My point is we do NOT baby kids in our society. We push them into adulthood as fast as possible, many times teaching them to rely on others instead of themselves. Thats my point.

What's the deal with liberals not understanding that states can have their own laws? If you don't want kids working in factories, then vote for a governor who will ban child slavery. Jesus guys. It's not that hard.

Let me get this straight for a second. Liberal states like California want to follow state rules when it comes to things like marijuana, but they want to push rules on everyone else when it comes to child slavery? What the hell is wrong with you people? Just be consistent. That's all any reason person expects from you. If you want your state to have its own rules, then you would agree with Gingrich.

Bolded line contradicts itself. Pushing a child into adulthood does not force them to grow up, it's just a transfer of parental responsibility from the actual mother and father to the rest of society. The end result of this is down protesting in a park near you.

i dont know what to think. sure, we keep kids as kids until theyre 15 or so... but holy christ we as americans are supposed to work 53 weeks a year until we are 70 years old! how the fuck can anyone argue that we need to be starting this shit earlier? newt doesnt get it, this guy clearly has not been doing manual labor his whole life. fuck him

You have a point but it's a different usage. I agree we want our kids to grow up too fast but yet we baby them too much. They are not mutually exclusive. People have refused to instill accountability and responsibility in kids is what I mean by babying.

Bullshit. Bullshit, bullshit, FUCKING BULLSHIT. What world do you live in? You do realize years ago people were literally getting the boot to their ass on the way out of their parents homes at 18? Now the average age is much higher than that and I can vouch as a 20 something that most the people I meet who are 21-26(my age) aren't adults. They're children in big bodies who have never been required to be responsible for their own actions. Why do you think there's so much bitching about student loan debt?

I just read what Newt said. Why do people have an issue with that? The only people who have an issue with his comments are probably the idiots who only read the headline and jump to conclusions without ever reading the article.

Mr. Gingrich is not unreasonable, though he should clarify ages/hours to avoid the "child slavery" implications we see expressed in this thread.

I'm more intrigued by his characterization of the CBO:
"The Congressional Budget Office is a reactionary socialist institution which does not believe in economic growth, does not believe in innovation and does not believe in data that it has not internally generated."

Is there any non-Gingrich group in Washington he does not view as socialist?

Well if you think thats the case, pageantry is far from the best example you should use.

Pushing a woman into adulthood by forcing them to dress up as adult women, shave and tan like adult women, is absolutely not teaching them to be adults. Kicking them out of the house when they are 18 is teaching them to be adults. Not playing dressup....

I read your response 3 times and I fail to see where we disagree.

I think of increasing responsibility, keeping your word, doing what you're supposed to be doing as Maturity and being an adult.

Not necessarily doing adult things. If a kid smokes weed is he an adult?

I just read it also. I'm not finding the controversy here.

The idea of slavery in this country is a crock. I mean, look at the OWS nuts. Obviously no one has been able to force these people to work. 😎

We should just institute the republican wet dream. No child labor laws, no minimum wage, no public schools. Lets create a new class below working poor one that needs 3 or 4 jobs to keep a household running. It'll be glorious just think of all the jobs the creators could make then!

I dunno man. Im old enough to be your father, and when I was your age it was fairly common to still live at home. My parents generation is an exception as most of them went off to war by no choice of their own. Do I think the percentage of kids who either dont move out or move out then return is higher now than when I was your age? Sure. Thats why Ive heard your generation referred to as the B gens (boomerang). But I dont think it was as common as you think, at least in my circle of friends, to be booted out at 18 and never return.

That sounds more like your wet dream, something you invented so you have something to rally against because your life actually lacks purpose. Who am I kidding though? You're a partisan hack and a troll, like most people on this forum.

Well, I tend to agree. The point has been made that being of adult age doesnt make one an adult. Perhaps I should have said we push kids to display adult behavior?

As far as the article goes...I dont see an issue.

Lol. I'm hardly a partisan hack. These boards just tend to bring out the republican stupids more than the dems so I end up looking like a dem.
