Newt Gingrich: Child labor laws 'truly stupid'

I was fortunate enough to find a grocery store that would allow 15-year-old kids to work. I got a job and it taught me a hell of a lot - how to balance a checkbook, make payments on time (I paid for my 1st vehicle with my own money and bought it before I turned 16.) It is uncommon to find anyone who will hire highschool students. I think the laws need to be changed to allow children who want to work to have that opportunity. It is a HUGE part of growing up. Kids turning 18 that have NEVER had a job before are, by and large, useless. Those jobs aren't just about making money - they are about learning chain of command, working with people you may not like, customer service, being on time... they money is just gravy.

Hell, I would go a step further and make getting a job a requirement before getting your drivers license at 16. No job? No license until you are 18.

Off the point AoS.

If you found no problem with getting a job and what you gained from it, CLLs do not need to be changed.

Newt is just rabble rousing.

That was several years ago. It is no longer easy for high schoolers to find decent jobs. I don't know how that is off the point? CLLs should change. Maybe we wouldn't have a society filled with slack-jawed lazy fucks who are more interested in skipping school to play MW3 all night long.

cybr, come back to the real world when you are done postulating.

IT COSTS LESS MONEY to have 3 guys with mops than to try and get a bunch of kids to do the jobs.

ESPECIALLY with things like availability, liability, and skill sets. Jr is not going to be able to fix an outlet and most parents do not want him unclogging a toilet.

In fantasy land that plan may work, but not in the real world.

You obviously have 0 real world experience with kids and "getting them to do things".

You fire those who do not do their job. Just like in the non-unionized portion of the real world.

As for the cost, who knows. Yes, you still need the actually head dude to fix the electical outlets, etc. But I see no reason why a kid cannot unclog a toilet...how does it get unclogged at home?

The cost was never a factor in what he said, so it is not an issue here:

”I tried for years to have a very simple model,” he continued. “Most of these schools ought to get rid of the unionized janitors, have one master janitor and pay local students to take care of the school. The kids would actually do work, they would have cash, they’d have pride in the schools, they’d begin the process of rising.”

that's because older people are hungry enough to start working at BK...

Again, you are expanding on it. CLLs do not make kids play video games. PARENTS are to blame for most of the problems with today's youth, NOT the government, NOT teachers, NOT TV.

The resident Forum Jester appears! He likes to go thread to thread, crapping on my while having me on his ignore list. He does this so we point at him and laugh. It is because laughter is good for us, and he cares about us.

🙂 He is a great guy, purposefully acting like a complete fool for our amuement. I always picture him wearing little bells on his hat and shoes when I read his posts. They are very funny when viewed in the proper light.

wow hi i am stupid how do i add and subtract maths to balance a checkbook? I also do not know how to make payments on time. They say it is due by the 5th and i don't give it to them by the 5th why are they calling me asking where the money is???

I was going to say the same thing... but did not for the same reasons you gave.

Minimum wage jobs are, pretty much, a waste of time.

Doing a summer job might teach a bit of responsibility and give a bit of spending cash, but you really do not get much from that.

While in college, I did the same, saving up MOST of what I earned during the summer to finance my spending money during the school year....

It came nowhere near what would even cover dorm fees.

I cooped 5 semesters in school making $16, eventually $18/hour getting experience and all that did was raise my EFC and disqualify me from tons of scholarships. Though it did get me spending money to be able to buy groceries, some beer, and usually the dorm fee for the next semester.

First grade taught me how to balance a check book, and if I hadn't already figured out interest beforehand 8th grade business class would taught me the importance of paying off credit quickly (what kind of retard needs to learn to pay their bills by the date listed?)

Ever try finding a job without a car first? It's near impossible in much of the country.

You sound like the average low income housing occupant...

Kids might as well start learning to clean toilets for the rich sooner, right Newt? No more need to fill their heads with dreams of a college education anymore.

Actually those would be the ones paying their own way through College instead of sitting on their ass waiting for a loan or a handout.

Here I'll give you an example.

Start at age 14, if the Parents approve, and as a requirement the money has to go into a College fund. Imagine 15k a year for 4 years. They'll have 60k for college at 18, and have the option of taking out 5k a year for school / living expenses. So between 40-60k college fund for anyone who wants it at the age of 18. Not paid for by the tax payer.
