Another requirement from my side was an open bar

We had choices of two open bar packages -- the first included EVERYTHING (beer, wine, hard liquor) and the second option was just beer and wine. We did the beer and wine option because that's pretty much what everyone would drink anyway and it was significantly cheaper.

My mother. We don't care as long as she pays for it. Which I think she will

It looks like our flights + small wedding + 2 receptions is around $8k.
I currently have $5k saved up for wedding and $2k saved up for the ring. I don't really know how much a setting costs.

err, settings don't cost 2k.

What was your venue Indy?

We were married in the Indiana Statehouse, in front of the Christmas tree under the rotunda. My wife is a huge fan of Christmas and even though she initially thought a Christmas wedding wasn't something she wanted, she warmed up to it.

Alfa, do you want a tip to save money? If at all possible, try to get married on an off night, such as a Friday night. You will likely save significant money that way.

Oh, she's got around $10,000 saved up for the wedding...

Would it be stupid to buy a couple bottles of the following:
Scotch, Gin, Vodka, Rum, some wine and lots of beer.

Then just hire a bartender?

depend on size of reception. May end up being cheaper.

Nice!

That sounds reasonable. Thanks!

we had reception in a restaurant, brought our own liquor and the restaurant charged a fee/tip for serving.

It depends on the size of the reception and if everyone is a drinker or not. In general, you'd nearly always save money by buying your own booze and hiring a bartender, but that can be a hassle. Also, some reception venues may not allow that so you'd have to check to make sure. I think our two options came out to something like $22 per head (beer and wine) or $35 per head (everything). $22 per head was pretty reasonable and I think most of us drank that much if not more. :D

ELOPE. Take your girl, yourself, her best friend (maid of honor/threesome), your best friend (best man), and go find yourselves a beach or a cliff somewhere with a priest/JP/whatever.

My parents did that.

But that was because my mother was set / arranged to marry someone else.

So I talked to my friend last night, and it turns out, if I make it through Calculus this summer (ha. ha. ha.), we'll be in the same classes this fall, or at least mostly the same classes. Be pretty awesome to have someone in class I know, instead of sitting there detesting everyone else.
