Obscene Beauty - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6169980/reference/

this is being sold as "A vibrant journey through NYC's Burlesque world" but in reality it's a documentary on circus freaks; i am too old and too easily grossed out to even attempt to watch this.

..

guys, i really feel age has caught up with me. I am no longer willing to put myself through watching a full film "just for the experience", when i start watching something and i see it falls short on *SOME* of my expectations, i don't have the energy to sit through it looking for diamonds in the dirt.

The same way i started looking at In Transit, https://www.imdb.com/title/tt11923820/reference/ and it's all shot on a phone, a hyperrealistic film about drug dealers in NYC (shot on location). And while i did catch a glimpse of the dialogue and acting and they were good, i just don't have the strength to get through it, not even enough to get a solid idea of what the film is like - i am surrendered to the idea that i will lose out on fun.

.. there's just so much film being made, it's not possible to keep up with it all. I'd need to be a professional film reviewer and spend 6 hours a day watching film just to keep up with every. fucking. series. or film that some pretentious asshole thought was a good enough idea to pump some millions in it and then vomit it across our screens, and i can't put up with that anymore.

can you summarize it for me?
like, not the plot, but the appeal of the show.
It's a cartoon with great voice acting!

Plenty of humor. Plenty of violence. Plenty of happy times. Plenty of really bad times. The main character IS "invincible" but with a twist (he is still almost mortal though we never find that out for sure). It's the cartoon I would've loved to watch as a teenager growing up. There are some great life lessons in here. It's ridiculously well written for a cartoon.

i then have 2 questions for you:

1. how does it compare to Axe Cop, and
2. how can you live in the shame of being alive and never having watched Axe Cop.

1. It probably won't compare since Axe Cop seems more cartoony (as in little kids cartoony. sort of Cartoon Network-like) and more over the top. Just looking at the animation style I can tell that Invincible is more serious and the protagonist, despite being brave and sort-of invincible, still gets serious scares from the situations he has to deal with. I'm guessing Axe Cop is more similar to Kill Bill.

2. I didn't know I was supposed to be ashamed for not knowing about Axe Cop so thanks for introducing me to this unprecedented shame. I will try to get over it soon by watching the first episode.

Axe Cop is pure genius.

They got a 6yo kid to write the scripts. Needless to say, the scripts are *fantastic*.

Understandable. You are only human and we all have very, very limited time on this planet. But I still kinda approach critically and widely acclaimed movies with caution rather than completely unknown and indie movies. When the majority becomes deranged enough to support Trump and Putin, you can't really be sure that the movies they are loving are good too.

Nickel Boys - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt23055660/reference/

Which is a film that's ... very artistic. And it's only interesting from the artistic perspective.

The story is of a young black kid during Jim Crow america (*yawn*). He is headed down south to go to a school that's offering free classes to black only, but gets caught up in institutional racism.
It's all filmed from a first-person perspective, and while the unusual format, the good quality photography, are all interesting from a purely technical point of view, unless you're the guy from Yourmoviessuck.com you're probably not gonna like it. I didn't.

my vote: 6/10 - and only for the right crowd.

The Menu (Netflix) - I thought this was a delightful thriller/black comedy. No spoilers from me - watch it for yourself. I thought the ending didn't quite stick it, specifically I thought when the final course was served, the diners should have had a stronger reaction. I'd give this, I dunno... 8/10? 9/10? Had the ending been slightly more true to life, it would be 10/10 for me.

Upgrade - 9/10 - Now streaming on Netflix

After stumbling onto The Invisible Man and loving it, figured I should watch the directors other films. Upgrade is a futuristic Sci-Fi action thriller with a good bit of gore.

I went into it completely blind and for those of you havent seen it - WOW, it's a must watch. The fir 2/3rds of the film are a solid 10 with it slowing down a bit in the 3rd portion and I really felt the car chase scene was unnecessary and egregious in length.

Director loves his futuristic homes and sets are fantastic!

Upgrade - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6499752/reference/

Starts as a inferior version of Limitless, then veers off in another direction. It's got a lot of good ideas, but also a lot of things done badly. A good rewrite and some artistic talent would have elevated it to a really good score .. but then the same could be said for Limitless.
All in all recommended for cyberpunk fans, an *actually realistic* cyberpunk scenario and plot. But you have to put up with the bad to get to the good.

6/10
eh maybe even 6.5/10, it really wasn't bad.

Birthmarked - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4702826/reference/

you know when you walk into a film and it's already started and all the characters act as if they are in a really funny film, but the funny bit has already passed? Like, you can tell it's a comedy, but it's not funny *right now*.
Two hours of that.

5/10 for the right crowd. Who the right crowd is, i don't know.

Becoming Led Zeppelin - 6.5/10 - should have waited this to be streaming but thought the theatre experience would be good for the live performances and audio. And it was. Very interesting stuff about the bandmates before they became Led Zeppelin - and because this is the first band-endorsed documentary, the three remaining members give lots of commentary. It's great. But as far as the band once they became Zep, it only goes up to their second album, Led Zeppelin II - whereas I tend to love a higher ratio of their tracks from albums after that, when their sound really matured and came together more often in a magnificent way. Love some stuff on the first two, but they sounded better later overall to me.

But I guess that's why the title is 'Becoming' Led Zeppelin, and not just Led Zeppelin. I thought they could have given less time to the first two albums though, and added more of the later stuff evolution. That was a bit of a disappointment. But if you are fine with that, it's a better movie. And definitely wait for it to stream.

One Of Them Days - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt32221196/

*extremely* ethnic and vaguely funny comedy about 2 girls in the hood that can't really do anything without making a mess of any situation. Well made, well acted, but ultimately too far removed from me culturally, so i can't really pass judgement.
probably better than some other shit i've seen recently.

The Gorge - 6/10 - Now streaming on A-TV+

It's a fun summer popcorn flic that has significant plot holes and needs the viewer to not ask any damn questions. This is not serious film-making, its a fun ride and moves pretty quickly. CGI was good enough,.

Soundtrack and licensing of music was costly and solid choices were utilized which once again leads to a lighthearted vibe.

Its a fun 2hrs. I did think Miles Teller, was a discount Shia LaBeouf.

Wait, there's a minimum pilot height too? I knew there was a max.

Anyway, I've never seen either Top Gun...honestly just not a fan of Tom Cruise. I've never seen Mission Impossible either.
Last Samurai
Live, Die, Repeat
Risky Business
Rain Man

All excellent IMO.

Watching Stranger Things S4. Left off at 3 which was the newest season when canceling Netflix. Picking up where we left off. This one gets me with the heavy nostalgia bait. I can't resist it. 7/10 so far

Reacher S3 8/10. Simple old school badass formula. Comfort food for my brain.

King of the Hill reruns 10/10 This show gets better with age.

Was that really the title in theaters there? I saw Edge of Tomorrow. Oblivion and Valkyrie were also good.
That's probably right for U.S. too. I will never call it that.

Good to see someone else here chime in on this movie. I would not have enjoyed a more real life ending nearly as much.

Last Samurai
Live, Die, Repeat HE MEANS EDGE OF TOMORROW
Risky Business
Rain Man

All excellent IMO.
Risky Business was ok. I don't know why but i have a personal grudge against this film. Oh hell, yeah i know why; because Tom Cruise was one of the reasons why all the girls in my class had their head in the clouds, and they were more concerned with what they would wear the day they 100% sure would be making out with tom cruise, within a week, or maybe two, at most, it's 100% happening bro, he lives in another country yeah but no i'm totally saving myself for TOM FUCKING CRUISE, and Risky Business was the film that first painted Cruise as this cutey, insufferable brat. Some kind of evil Han Solo.

Rain Man i just didn't like. The older i get, the more i detest Dustin Hoffman.
I think the whole thing was 1980s Oscar Bait, although this is not a bad film. Cruise's character is an interesting, flawed character, but maybe the redemption arc didn't really need to be so fucking PG-13. It's not Leaving Las Vegas.

Last Samurai has two things i like the most in life. Samurai, and suicidal last stands. I really think the combination of Ken Watanabe and Tom Cruise is incredibly perfect, and i cannot think of another actor but Cruise who could have done an even *equal* job, much less something better. This is THE film that reevaluated Cruise completely for me. It's a masterpiece. It's as good as Dances With Wolves with Kostner in it. You can't change this film without fucking it up.

Edge Of Tomorrow to me is a great film, despite the horrible ending. And, i really don't feel like the ending ruined it for me, for me, the ending of that story doesn't even matter. I love it because it's a heroic action film, but it's also incredibly fucking funny. This horrendously incompetent piece of shit which is Cruise's character, thrown to the wolves and made to be a hero, and FAILING REPEATEDLY, is just hilarious. I got my comedy and i got my action, the end doesn't even matter.

Dustin Hoffman was okay in Little Big Man and Hook . He played Dustin Hoffman in every other movie he was in. He can act when a director makes him, otherwise he coasts.

Live, Die, Repeat is basically a video game. He has to memorize every detail of every level and the only way to do it is to die over and over progressing as you get better at the game mechanics and execute properly on clearing the enemies.

I enjoyed the character arc of him being an abject coward, and dying 1000s of times curing him of his fear of death.

I also would rate The Firm 8/10. Liked the book and they did a good job bringing it to film.

The rant about being jelly of Tom's sex appeal with girls BITD I can't relate to. I was getting lots of hot monkey love. We really liked the movie. My bro lived in Chicago back then and said the area it was set in had a high suicide rate for teens. Because of all the academic pressure they were under, just like the movie portrays. Citation might be needed, I never looked it up.

Midnight Cowboy was an excellent performance. Marathon Man was a favorite of mine when I was a punk kid. Rain Man we still quote. I use the definitely a good driver line when the opportunity presents. I have not seen it in forever as it isn't the rewatchable kind of movie.

I'd rate every Chuck Norris movie 4/10 now. I loved them growing up and in my 20s but they aged like warm milk on a summer day. Using that metric Steven Seagull movies are all 1/10. Bruce Lee movies are guilty pleasures of 10. Man! You come right out of a comic book!

Preface: If (collective you) read this and want to make a politically oriented reply, fuck right off. When you get there, fuck right off again. That out of the way; Critical drinker has a good review of it. Nails most of it. He is a little too triggered by the girl boss thing though. I'd like to drag him to BJJ class where a cute and petite black belt lady will proceed to strangle him unconscious repeatedly until he has had enough. Sleep on women that train hard for years in combat sports and you will literally get some Zzzzz's in.

Marathon Man is a great movie but Hoffman just played Hoffman.

Steven Seagal is an awful actor but Fire Down Below is seven kinds of awesome. I used to work as a regulator on superfund projects and this movie is 100% accurate to our daily experiences. ;)
