I have one in place. Obviously, she doesn't think any of it applies to her. Which reminds me, she asked if she could stream XM Radio through the Internet, which is a clear no-no stated in the policy.

A 10Mb hub connected to the network. Attached to this hub should be one PC that does nothing but causes lots of traffic, creating a massive bottleneck for anyone else stuck on it.

As someone who is frequently frustrated by lack of admin, it would be nice if there was a bit more logic sometimes behind what I am and am not allowed to do.

Example: In XP, windows grouping was active and I could not access the settings becuase they were locked. So I searched around, found the register key and modified the registry value. So I can't update task bar properties, but I can edit the registry?

That sounds like you found a backdoor that the person creating the policy never thought of.

The entire purpose of a network admin and permissions is to keep non-tech people from installing crap on business computers that have nothing at all to do with work. To the one who said you'd be willing to let non-tech people install stuff on windows boxes, that's probably why your not an admin. Admins have to be able to lay down the law and say no, otherwise the computers will end up crashing and guess who's to blame User: Well I didn't know it would do this, the admin let me install it, blame him. A company computer is not your own personal property to install every piece of software you want. There is logic behind this. bonzi buddy and some screensavers come with spyware that cause lots of popups and can easily cause problems on other computers on the network.
