Fonts are copyrighted, unless your company owns a license for those, it's illegal to install random fonts....

slap the AUP on her, and tell her to contact HR with any concerns or comments regarding the AUP, as they are the department that handles/manages that.

Come 3 pm I said ****** it and grabbed a rogue linux box we had sitting around and just put it on the network. Problem solved.

That being said, i wouldn't let non-tech people load stuff on a windows box.

And im sure you are the same yuppy that claims that systems are insecure and not reliable while at the same time spending most of your day organizing your ipod library and rocking out with Bonzai Buddy. There is a reason why the IT people are in charge of IT. There needs to be order and control in order to have an efficient and secure system

No actually I have a degree in Computer Science and happen to be part of the business division that pays the bills. There's no difference whether you have the admin password and install the dev tools I need or I just do it myself... well except that the former takes days.

Tell her you need to ****** because you need to implement administrator previlieges inside her butt in order to continue working on her computer.

hmm, what is the annoying part? Her asking your help or her asking for permission?

Well, we can start with this one:
she was complaining that there wasn't a particular font that she liked and used at home.
A good use of his time?

As someone who is frequently frustrated by lack of admin, it would be nice if there was a bit more logic sometimes behind what I am and am not allowed to do.

Example: In XP, windows grouping was active and I could not access the settings becuase they were locked. So I searched around, found the register key and modified the registry value. So I can't update task bar properties, but I can edit the registry?

That sounds like you found a backdoor that the person creating the policy never thought of.

It's a pretty common backdoor. I had to do the exact samething to disable grouping at a previous job.

Draw up a list of software on your standard workstation image. When she asks, look at the list, then up at here and go "Nope!"

Put her on the punishment hub.

What is "the punishment hub?"

A 10Mb hub connected to the network. Attached to this hub should be one PC that does nothing but causes lots of traffic, creating a massive bottleneck for anyone else stuck on it. :p

LOL, i thought i was the only one who did this.

Heh... or if you have managed switches, configure her port to 10Mbps half-duplex and put QoS on it.

:D

testing escapes you I think.

Sure just throw anything on the enterprise network.

if you have asshats working for you, it says alot about the company.

We are a Fortune 400...asshats get trebuchet'd to some 3rd world country where they fit in.

you need some measures/requirements then for 'help desk' tickets.

If the culture there doesn't dictate that then move on if you can't accept it.

I my line of work we have people being paid 6 figures that can't even get a subject in their email and lock themselves out of their accounts almost monthly.

Uh oh... someone pulled out the "we make the business money" card.

And there are simple reasons why software installations need to be managed by IT. Lets take Office as an example. Adam and Betty have Office 2000 installed on their computers. Adam decides he wants to use Office 2003 because he just got it at home and wants to be able to transport his files back and forth. Well, when Adam sends Betty his Word document that he created. Well guess what, Betty can't open it because she has an older version. Since Betty can't open it, she goes and installs Office 2007. Now multiply this by the number of employees that are in the company and you can see how quickly of a nightmare this can become.

if you have physical access to the box it should take minutes.

they may complain when the admin password has been reset and they can't log in...at that point blame it on the help desk.

She then apparently found some old and outdated fonts that we had stored on our server. She tried to install them (herself) and quickly found out that she didn't have the proper Windows permissions to do so. She asked if I could install them for her which I reluctantly agreed to do. While doing so, she asked if she could bring in a screen saver from home and again asked if she could install it herself? Notice a trend so far...? About a couple days ago, she was complaining that there wasn't a particular font that she liked and used at home. She asked if she could bring a copy of it and again install it herself.

GRRRRRRRRR

Do you have a computer policy at work that covers users installing software, etc. etc. etc.? If so show it to her and remind her that ALL employees are expected to comply.

If your work doesn't have a computer policy......... Oh well, got what you deserve
