I actually liked the uniqueness of the Lance Armstrong theme, but ended up returning it because the Turion is lacking in battery life and heat is a definite issue.

The FSB (Front Side Bus) is limited to 266MHZ. This limits the speed of the computer. I believe that the new ones are 333mhz or even faster

Is this true??? How can you tell?

I know that the older ones used PC2700 but speeds werelimited to PC2100, but has this been rectified?

URGENT!!

Have same configuration Compaq v2000 and v2000z at almost same price. Only difference

processor in v2000 : Intel pentium M 715A (1.5 GHz 400 FSB 2 MB Cache)

processor in v2000z : AMD Turion ML-30 (1.6 GHz - 1 MB Cache)

especially concerned about what when longhorn comes out. Will 64 bit matter for a laptop...?

I am looking a getting my first laptop for work (inventory) and family vacation (dvd) use and am interested in the Compaq V2000z that is on sale at OfficeDepot until August 20, 2005 for $399.99 plus $40 shipping. It is completely stripped down at this price, specs:

AMD Sempron 2800+ (1.6GHz/256KB L2 Cache)
Windows XP Home Edition with SP2
14.0 WXGA BrightView Widescreen
256MB DDR SDRAM
40 GB 4200 RPM Hard Drive
8X DVD Drive
ATI RADEON(R) XPRESS 200M(128MB shared)

I plan to build to order the following upgrades:

54g(TM) Integ. Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN & Bluetooth +$45
6-in-1 card reader, IEEE 1394 port and an expansion port for the HP xb2000 Notebook Expansion Base +$25

For a total of $514.99 after all rebates.

Debating on getting the
12 Cell Lithium Ion Battery +$25

Six quick questions:

I plan on getting a 512MB stick of RAM from NewEgg,com, any suggestions?

Is the AMD processor sodered to the motherboard or is it in a socket where I can upgrade it to a 64bit AMD Turion in a year or so?

How many Bluetooth headphones can be connected at the same time? I have three kids so 3 or 4 headphones would be nice for dvds.

Can I add HP QuickPlay to the Compaq myself?

Will it still fit in most sleeves with the 12 Cell Battery?

Finally, will the V2000z as configured above be able play Star Wars Battlefront on low to medium settings?

Thanks.

Can I add HP QuickPlay to the Compaq myself? maybe if you got a hard drive image of an HP and imaged your computer with that, but even then it would be iffy.

Will it still fit in most sleeves with the 12 Cell Battery? Yes. It only adds like .25" to the bottom or so

Finally, will the V2000z as configured above be able play Star Wars Battlefront on low to medium settings? maybe. I don't remember SW:BF being that intensive, but I played it on my A64 6800GT desktop. If you want to play that, add a 1GB stick of RAM instead so that you can use as much RAM for the GPU as possible.

Thanks.

Thank you for the feed back.

I found this additional $100 rebate for upgrading to an AMD64 processor

http://rebates.teg-online.com/officedep...ey=249541&odserver=www.officedepot.com

Upgrade price for an AMD Turion 64 Mobile Technology ML-28 is only $75 -$100 rebate nets an additional $25 off for a better processor!

With the 35watt Turion I am definatelly getting the 12cell battery for longer run time and to provide additional air space for cooling.

I just had a look at the DV1000 at BB today... a very attractive notebook for the price IMO.

Just thought i would post about my findings on the V2000.
I ordered the V2000 with 512mb ram, Sempron 2800, and ultrbrite LCD. I love it so far. Havent really tested the batter out yet. Played CS on it, gettin 90fps 800x600, and it doesnt get too hot either. I love how small it is, and that it weighs only about 5 pounds. The Broadcom wireless mini pci adapter is pretty strong, it picks up a lot of networks in my dorm, same amount as my desktop with the hawking antenna.
So far, i am very pleased with this laptop, the shared video memory kinda stinks, but u can change the amount it uses in bios if you dont want it to be hogging all your memory.

Oh, and i love the dispay on this thing. It is so clear, and its perfect for watching widescreen movies :)

Just got back from a trip where we stayed in a hotel with WiFi so here are some impressions. Our room was on the fourth floor and the signal was very weak. The hotel had a breakfast room with good tables & chairs near the main desk so I camped there for 90 minutes on battery power. That took my 12cell down to 64% charge. Ouch, now I'm glad to have the extra power. The 12cell sticks out of the bottom and makes the notebook uncomfortable for laptop use though. The BriteView got alot of OOOO's from people getting coffee in the breakfast room! The fan was not very loud at all. It runs up to full speed when loading a program or file, but is still quiet compared to others that I have heard. The speed of the WiFi is slower than DSL. I wish they had CAT-5 outlets in the room. At night I let the kids play Star Wars Battlefront while plugged-in and recharging. SWBF runs ok with the 768RAM (128 to the graphics) I have installed, however there is some lag when the processor has to render steam or smoke.

hey everyone, just checking in :)

not sure if notebook coolers were brought up before, but i have since bought one to use. it gives me peace of mind to know that my system can be instantly cooled when needed, which prolongs the life of all components.

i got the antec one in black: Text

it's not perfect (especially the fit if you have the 12cell like me--i think it will feel unbalanced on all notebook coolers). the fans are also a bit on the loud side (i still haven't gotten a chance to mod them). however, for my uses, it works. there are a few reviews on the internet so i won't be too long winded. one thing i wish it did have is two speed settings. other than that, it's thin enough to be taken with me and it's pretty sturdy. PM me if you have any questions.

happy dv'ing.

WE'RE #2

AnandTech $600 Notebook Roundup
So it is with great honor and appreciation that we give Gateway our Editor?s Choice Gold Award for the Best $600 Notebook.

Our second pick would probably go to the Compaq Presario V2000, but given that it is bigger and has a shorter battery life, there?s really no reason to consider it over the Gateway

Of course they fail to mention that the base v2000 & v2000z are offered for $439 ($399AR+$40shipping) every other week at Staples, Office Depot and Office Max.

http://staples.shoplocal.com/staples/de...17%26L2CatId%3d16217%26L1CatID%3d16173

Upgrade to 54g 802.11 b/g wireless LAN for only $25 and the 12cell battery for another $25.

Then add your own 512mb of RAM for about $50.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145484

Total of $539 after rebate and who is #2 now?

Out of the bunch tested, I still prefer my V2000z AMD Turion64 with ATI RADEON XPRESS 200 graphics because it can actually play games beyond Harry Potter, and the $484AR deal I got.

so many variants now, even within the v2000/dv1000 line... just look at all of HPs new laptops. of course, we were the original!

anyway, i think i'm headed toward a convertible tablet PC (brother wants to buy the dv). unless i can control the urge, i should have a fujitsu p1510D in my lap by christmas time :)

happy dv'ing.
