I found from DV1000 forums that the problem in my machine is very common in some recently made dv1000.

They have noisy HD(from TOSHIBA, 4200rpm and 5400rpm)and the fan turns on and off frequently even when the machine is doing no serious task(type in Word, browse web page...)!

I don't know whether early dv1000 have problems like this~~

I never heard of early models doing that, nor have I experiienced the same symptoms. My gf has a dv1000 that was custom ordered through Best Buy, about a month old now. HDD is audible in a quiet room when crunching away, but no worse. Fans run occasionally, but only when running hot & not very loud.

I read some reviews before I bought it but I did not read any info about noisy HD or fan.

Then I guess there is sth wrong with the building quality recently as I am not the only guy who complains this problem in dv1000 forum.

It did not make sense to make new problem for a machine which has been popular for months~~~

I guess Quanta should be responsible for the quality problems~~~

Hey so... whats the consensus here?

Which is better , the HP or the compaq, or is it equivocal? Which has the more BLING factor? I have seen the HP and it is nice... How does the compaq v2000 compare?

I agree that the Dell 700m is nice but a little too small...

Are there any other comparable notebooks out there with a widescreen 14" LCD that I should be looking at also? It would be great if there was one with a real graphics card...
Some manufacturers got to fill that niche?

Oh yeah, lastly how ez is it to upgrade the hardrives on these machines?
I was thinking that I could save a couple off bucks by buying my own HD ... What kind of hard drives do these machines use anyway... Anyone upgrade theirs?

I'm definitely planning to install my own memory.

Thanks AT

Memory I'm sure is doable

Pan, I went with the HP cuz it had the visual edge with the blue illunimated lights and black lacqured buttons. I really like the way it feels, light weight yet does what I need it to do. I looked at the Compaq but just did not get excited by it.

I actually went into a Circuit City and Best Buy and handled them both prior to making my choice. And the other models were all gaged on the HP 1000. Either one I'm sure is a good choice.

I've only had mines for a few weeks now so upgrading the hard drive is not something I'm doing anytime soon. But if you can install your own, you should be in good shape.

I am thinking about purchasing the DV1000, and wanted to check with everyone who had purchased it recently whether some of the problems mentioned in this thread and others are still there on recently built laptops: 1) CMOS clock problem 2) Loud Harddrives 3) Fan excessively turning on and off etc.

Is HP thinking of coming out with a new laptop of similar size, spec as DV1000 anytime soon?

New anoyance: it is nice in N. CA now so I have been doing some work on my deck outside. The new problem is the bright view. It reflects at most angles myself and it makes it hard to see the screen. I really dispise this damn screen.

New thing I'm looking for: I am looking for a good replacement power cable. The one that comes with the laptop is not so good as it has no way to tie down the power cable when I put it into my bag. This = big knot. Any recomondations?

New cool thing: My DV1000 has bluetooth. I got the microsoft intelimouse blutooth. It works GREAT! it even shuts down the bluetooth connection when not in use (kinda puts it to sleep and wakes up with movement)

New nice thing: I redid my harddrive and all my problems with Examsoft (program for lawschool exams) disapeared. Must have had to do with my shared drives for sync'ing with my desktop. Now I have to get that working without all the problems. BUT the good part is in the reinstall the HP disks are great. Having all the programs and drivers on a single DVD was nice. I poped it in and it did it all with a minimal of fuss.

New Idea: a while back on the screensavers they took some steel wool to an ipod back face to hide scratches. I am considering doing this to my dv. It will be a few more months before I get up the nerve to do this.

wow good to see this thread still alive. seems like yesterday when i first discovered news of the dv1000 and posted this tread. ;)

i've used mine loyally for the past 3 months with no major problems. for those with fan problems, make sure you go into POWER SETTINGS and choose a profile that does not have the cpu running at full speed (laptop or max battery, etc). the pentium m is able to dynamically control cpu speed and throttle down to 600mhz when less cpu power is needed.

i use this app, which is very good and adds some nice real-time info: Speedswitch XP

evan: bluetooth is definitely the way to go. i use it with my 3 cell phones to transfer data, images, etc as well as control winamp via my cell phone (with a sonyericsson phone)! (although i have the remote as well).

good luck all, and potential buyers feel free to PM me. i'd be happy to tell you what i know.

I just got a new sleeve for my dv1000. It's a Sumdex Impact Guard, for the 15.4" size notebooks.

It fits perfectly. Very little room along the sides, but about an inch and half at the top.

As for styling, it's your basic black with a little grey trimming and grey handles.

About $25 US.

Note that, after the dv1000 gets in the Impact Guard, there is just enough room at the top of Impact Guard to squeeze in the power supply and cords.

Seems like WinBook has a model that acts like the dv1000.

The Winbook W235 is lighter (4.8 lbs.), but supports only 1 GB DDR memory versus 2 GB in dv1000; no Brightview and no QuickPlay.

I think it uses the Intel Extreme 2 Graphics, but it is noteworthy that it has a DVI-D port, which suggests that you can ouiput to digital LCD pc monitors and to wide screen HD-ready "LCD TVs".

Incidentally, the latest BIOS (Feb. 05) fixed an issue I had had with QuickPlay.

I have Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 box that can record HiDef television programs.

I recorded the Preakness horse race last weekend, and then transferred the file over to my dv1000. However, when I try to play the race Windows Media Player 10, Windows chokes, stalls, and comes to a freeze after playing the first eight seconds or so of the race. Rebooting restores the machine.

Some notes: the length of the recording is 1 hour, 34 minutes, and the single video file is more than 11.5 GB. ABC Sports produced the Preakness in wide screen high definition, and my local ABC station broadcasted it in that format.

I've changed the settings in Windows XP Home to devote resources to higher performance instead of visual features (System Properties, Advanced tab, settings button under Performance, Adjust for Performance check box) .

I have 1.25 GB of system memory, and the Intel Extreme 2 Graphics has 64MB of memory devoted to it. I have the standard 40GB hard drive (4200 rpm?).

Anyone have any suggestions?

What about the V2000Z that's on Costco.com (and no where else I can find)?
It's the AMD version. I was wondering about battery ife and graphics performance vs the V2000.

Unfortunately battery life hasn't really been evaluated yet. It uses the new Turion 64 processor. Look for an in-depth review on a Turion system from the site in my sig soon

The AMD Turion(TM) 64 ML-37 (2.0GHz/1MB L2 Cache) is tempting for $1200. Looks like performance is equal, battery is up in the air. The X200 video has to be better.
Guess I need one of each to try ;) .

Edit: How soon will you have that review?

We have a Turion notebook on the way, but unfortunately we don't know exactly when it will arrive as we are getting the first model off the first shipment through a distributor. The day after we receive it, there will be a First Impressions posted and I will make a post in the Notebook forum for everyone. Keep an eye out in the next week or two!
