Not as of yet unfortunately, HP is difficult to get ahold of.
Our Turion notebook is from another manufacturer ;)

Yeah, I heard about that on Sunday from the head honcho. What happened is we EXCEEDED our bandwidth and caused the server to CRASH because of all the traffic we had this weekend. Apparently on of our articles was featured on slashdot and all went to hell  I will post in the Notebook forum once it is up and running again :) Thanks for your patience!

Slashdot effect will do that.
They are good articles.

Ahkorishaan writes "We heard from an earlier report here on Slashdot that IBM(Lenovo) had filed a patent on a TabletPC, and now they have officially announced the product. Our friends at Laptop Logic have a short review."

The site is up & running, but since we moved to a new dedicated server there are still some issues. As soon as its 100% up, I'll post in Notebooks :)

OK - my dv1000 is silver on the outside and black on the inside. It has a 14.1-in WXGA screen, and I got the 12-cell Li-Ion battery. It is supposed to be a multimedia notebook - and in some ways it is,but it has one failing.

The audio ports are Microphone, and 2 headphones. There is no LINE IN or LINE OUT. This makes it less than useful for extensive multimedia work such as converting analog media to digital format (tapes to CDs or DVDs.)

I had to buy a work-around, which really has been good - the Audigy 2NX external, USB SoundBlaster. It has all the necessary ports for audio processing.

Other than that - it is a slid, reliable performer. The graphics are quite good for what the machine is intended to do. It is a multimedia work machine - not a game machine.

Here is the little Audigy 2 NX - excellent device.

When a company says multimedia, it doesn't mean multimedia CREATION. Few laptops are designed with line in/out, and I say few because I haven't seen them and who knows if they actually exist.

I thought of a couple other questions!

1.how quick does the battery charge? 6cell /12cell?

2.How long should the battery last before needing a replacement? 1year, 2years etc???

3. is there a comparison between cpu speed and battery life?

Thanks

is there an 8 cell battery?
I know standard is 6 and most ppl talk about the 12 cell, but i have heard about an 8cell 4.4AHr! Is this true? Anyone have a photo?

Sorry, i am refering to the DV1000 with all these questions!

I believe in my dv1000 review I measured how much the 12-cell sticks out and took a photo of it.

1.how quick does the battery charge? 6cell /12cell? That is a good question. I haven't measured specifically, but I would GUESS around 2 hours (laptop off) w/6-cell and 4ish for the 12-cell (laptop off).

2.How long should the battery last before needing a replacement? 1year, 2years etc??? How do you define needing replacement? It will lose life slowly over time, but HP batteries are some of the best I've seen (obviously HP doesn't make 'em, but the batts they use). My gf's 12-cell dv1000 has held up well over the last 7 months, much better than the 6-cell that came with my T42. It will continue to work for years and years, but you will probably lose 5-10% of total capacity over a year's time.

3. is there a comparison between cpu speed and battery life? Technically all Dothan CPU's use the same power, regardless of speed (with regular voltage ones anyway, the ULV & LV models are different). That said if you run it at the full clock speed on battery there would be a difference between a 1.6GHz and a 2GHz model. But it wont' be much, 5-10 minutes AT THE MOST. Just buy the CPU appropriate for your needs, battery life impact is negligible

Thanks
And in response to the 8-cell question, HP does not have an 8-cell for the dv1000. 6 & 12 cells only

Hi fbrdphreak, i have seen pick of the 12cell battery, but not in a case, which is what i am after. Since it sticks out that much, i'm really curios what owners are doing when its in the sleeve, thats why im asking for a photo in a sleeve with the 12 cell battery attached, or if all owners detach the battery, then let me know too.

I just think its an awkward shape to fit snugly in a bag or sleeve.

Thanks,

1.If anyone gets the opportunity to log their recharing time, that would help (for either the 6 or 12 cell)

2.When using the laptop with the power supplu, do most users remove the battery?

3. Thanks for clarifying cpu speed v's battery life. AS a guide to my cpu usage, my daily desktop is only a P3 800, my HTPC is a P4 3.0c used for HDTV and light video editing. The problem is that a 1.6Ghz Pentium M would probably be adequate, but for approx A$600 extra i can upgrade from a 1.6ghz, 60gb, 512Mb DVD combo to 1.8, 100gb, 1024Mb, DVD DL +/-RW burner. which ends up making the 1.8ghz a better value buy. ( i think anyway)

A$600 is....Australian? The 1.8 does sound like a better value

You don't have to remove the battery as there is no overcharging risk, just keep it well ventilated so heat doesn't wear the battery prematurely.

Yep thats Australian, just remember i am talking the difference in price, not the final price!

The dv1000 model seems to be a big hit for HP.

They came out with a Lance Armstrong special edition.

Lance Armstrong Edition

OK. It's not exactly dv1000, but it is definitely modelled after it.

No QuickPlay.

Bingo. Its also really cheap for what you get and benefits Lance Armstrong's Cancer Foundation, if you don't mind the color scheme ;)

just checkin in on everyone. ;) hope we're all enjoying our dv1000s.

me, i've had my lcd replaced (smudges, that i suspect was from a defective lcd, were marring my screen) and service was SUPER fast. i was glad i'm still in my 1 year warranty, although i get paranoid i didn't opt for an extra year or two.

the only other issue is HEAT. that's why i'm coming back to ask you guys for a recommendation for a cooling pad. here's a few:

Text

my good buddy works there so i'm limiting my choices to one of those ;) i like the aluminum coolermaster notepal, but my concern is the lower CFM rating (10.5). also, the fans on the BACK are closer to the battery, which is not the hottest part of the notebook from my experience (it's on the front left palm).

my other choice is the antec notebook cooler with the two fans in the middle. my concern (without having played with it) is that it's too thick, and since i have a 12-cell, i wonder if the incline will be too steep once i put the laptop on. also, it looks plastic (isn't aluminum the best material for a heatsink?)

if anybody has any comments or rec's about cooling pads, let em loose.

Aluminum is the best heat absorbing material, but it shouldn't make a big diff considering you're not putting aluminum to aluminum. You're putting aluminum to plastic, shouldn't make a big diff in heat transfer.

I found this thread after searching online for reviews of the dv1000. I bought a dv1315cl from Sam's Club for $1199. Pentium-M 1.73GHz, 80GB HDD, 1GB RAM, BRITEVIEW screen etc...

I thought okay, it's a Pentium-M so I should not have any heat issues...well, turns out I do. I was fixing my friend's computer and she was using my laptop. I came out after a while and she said she turned my laptop off because it was getting too hot. I noticed the heat as well but tried to pass it off.

Sigh, glad to see it's not just me. I returned an L2000 w/ the 35w Turion because the heat on that thing was INSANE!

I'm wondering if I should return this one... My Sony Vaio VGN-A150 with a Pentium-M @ 1.5GHz feels cool to the touch from when it's turned on until it dies (on battery) which I thought was the norm. I guess not.

Is it a problem with the case design, and are all small(ish) laptops having problems with heat? I'd hate to return this second one to Sam's Club but for $1200 I expected much more.
