Jezuz dude, they uncovered a plot yesterday regarding possible explosives in "liquid materials"...i don't think you need to be a rocket scientist to make a new rule banning "liquid materials"...

That's the problem though, it is completely reactionary system. Shouldn't the current security measures be able to detect explosive devices? We already had a guy almost explode a shoe bomb on an airplane. Guess what resulted, everybody gets to take their shoes off when going through security. I wonder how supportive you'd be if they started randomly strip searching 25% of passengers. Hey, it's for our safety! The more hassles you put passengers through, fewer will choose to fly. The airline industry will suffer and people will lose jobs (who has won there?)

That's the point I made in the other thread... The people in charge of preventing terrorism should be sitting around a table, trying to think of things terrorists could use.

Anyone who knows anything about explosives or has seen a MacGuyver episode knows that you can use certain chemicals to make a bomb and use electronics to detonate it. It shouldn't take something like this for the lightbulb to suddenly light up and these guys to realize it too.

This is really just strong evidence that these people are clueless, or simply don't want to do anything. At best it's reactionary politics.

On another note about it being not real, I just V for Vendetta last night and I thought it was pretty good.

edit: must be tired if I'm reversing whole words. :p

"You need a little danger in your life. Take a fvcking chance once in a while, will ya'? What are you gonna do, play with your prick for another 30 years?"

"As far as I am concerned, all of this airport security...all the searches, the screenings, the cameras, the questions, its just one more way of reducing your liberty and reminding you they can fvck with you anytime they want. As long as you put up with it..."

George Carlin on airplane safety/security.

CNN Story about how the new security measures might stay forever.

Lets face it. The days of carry-on luggage and laptops, PDA's, iPod's etc on-board are numbered. We will have to fly completely bored.

OK I took my first flight where I had to check my bag.

58 minutes I waited in baggage claim. Total waste of my time.

I am going to just get toothpaste and such when I land on my next trip :|

From that story, it looks like its only for British Airlines.

Someone correct me if I am wrong but I believe is OK for flights within the US.

I am flying out to INDY tomorrow and I do not want to check in my Laptop.

The electronics restrictions are ONLY for the UK. Up until yesterday not even cell phones were allowed on board on UK flights.

For the US, only the liquid restrictions are in effect. You can still bring your carry on luggage, laptops, cell phones and iPods on board. The only exception may be flights traveling from the US to the UK (not sure about this).

Looks like the electronic restrictions have been lifted from (most? all?) UK flights as well.
"Starting on Aug. 15 at 4:30 a.m. local time, passengers flying from Heathrow, Gatwick and Standard airports to all destinations will be allowed to have one carry-on, according to the Department of Transport. The carry-on ban has already been lifted at Stansted, Birmingham, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Southampton.

However, the item must be no larger than 17.7 by 13.7 inches by 6.2 inches ? about the size of a laptop computer bag. Other bags, such as purses, may be carried, but they must fit within that single item of cabin baggage.

Though electronic items are again permitted, the liquids ban continues. To speed screening, the Department of Transport is requesting that fliers refrain from carrying any items capable of containing liquids, such as bottles, flasks, tubes and cans.

On flights to the USA, passengers will be searched again at the gate before they board."

You know what? I always check bags, and it does NOT take an inordinate amount of time to retrieve them.

What irks me is that the last time I checked my laptop (ok, first time, too), it didn't work on arrival. Awesome -- I'm flying to Italy in a few weeks. :|

I hate those people.

Retrieving checked luggage can take up to 20 minutes. That's not really an issue if you're beginning a week-long vacation, but it can make a difference if you're trying to get to a 10:00 am meeting on time.

In my opinion, the experienced business traveler knows how to board and exit the plane quickly and efficiently. He/she knows how large the overhead luggage compartments are and selects and packs his/her suitcase appropriately.

The problem with carry on passengers is not the business traveler but the inexperienced leisure traveler. They insist on overpacking small suitcases, taking more carry on items than allowed or using suitcases that are too large for the overhead compartments. These travelers are the reasons that flights take so long to board.

Agreed. I fly often enough and I can't stand the slowness/stupidity of some people in airports. I understand, if I didn't fly often I might be the same way (or closer.) But its painful. I never check baggage because I like getting on my way quickly. I have been with people who did check (on a vacation) and we waited over an hour for their luggage. That''s painful.

And while some business travelers are jerks who put too much into overheads, I've noticed airlines being much stricter with carry on rules about two bags max, one up top, one by your feet, and people (for the most part) are complying. What's really painful is people that have rolly-bags that don't fit into the overheads, and then they have to put then horizontally and it takes up sooo much space.

As a bussiness traveler I am going to ask why.

I assure you that I can get on and off the plane faster than you.

I carry my carryone luggage which fits nicely with two oters in the overhead compartment, and my laptop that fits nicely on the floor in front of me.

I get out of the plane quite quickly thank you.

Thoose of us that fly regularly are not the ones holding up the line in security, or in boarding or de-boarding of the plane.
