I will be using this PC for audio and sound production (I use Pro Tools so no sound card is needed in the PC), light Photoshop work and internet - No gaming. I will be running Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit. I would like to be able to keep this PC for 4-5 years without upgrading.

Thoughts? Did I miss something? Think it be stable? I look forward to the feedback. Thanks so much.

You've basically posted a list of parts.
You need to give us more information if you want feedback on your list.
How will this PC be used... what OS will be used... etc?
 
I assume you are saying to go Sandy Bridge? Can you elaborate on why? Is the 1366 a dead socket?

It is better in almost every single benchmark, it overclocks a lot better if you decide to Overclock now or down the line, It is in a new socket (not a dead one like the i7-970) and the i5-2500k is only $200 (while still out performing the i7-970)
 
OK I get that. And is it better to go with an 1155 socket over 1156 so you can over clock. Since the 1156 would run a i7-870. With no "k" behind it that's not unlock..

Yes 1366 is "dead" as there will be no new CPU's released for it. the next "enthusiast" socket will be socket 2011 (aka socket R) later this year.

Socket 1156 is "dead" too because there will be no new 1156 cpu's, however i would get 1155 because of the more advanced IGP and the "K" series being so easily overclockable. (the i5-2500k OC's to 4.4Ghz with a small aftermarket HSF) There are 1156 "K" series chips but none as powerful as the 1155 i5-2500k or the i7-2600k
 
wow all that sound GREAT. What a huge help and a whole heap of buyers remorse saved! Thanks. So now I just need to figure if the i7 2600k is worth the extra $100. Also to overclock like we are talking about I need the P series motherboard not the H series right.

The only other problems I see is when I search new egg for Asus 1155 or p67 board there seem to be none in stock .. at all... that scares me a bit! What am I missing?
 
There was a recall of the 1155 motherboards about a month ago, they will be coming back in stock, in the next week or two more and more will be coming back in stock. And yes to over clock you will need a P67 Motherboard not an H67 one. The i7-2600k IMHO is not worth the $100 unless you like wasting money OR if you are running heavily threaded applications and need more threads. The only real difference between the i5-2500k and the i7-2600k is the fact that the i7 has hyperthreading which treats each core as 2 "threads" each able to process independently.

Hate to tell you this, but over a 4-year time horizon, all sockets are dead sockets. 😛

Sounds like mnewsham got you straightened out. No sense in paying $800 for a platform whose performance can be matched by a $350 one.

Yeah mnewsham helped a LOT! So thanks for that. Can someone suggest a case/ power supply and motherboard I know the P67 are out of stock right now, but perhaps someone could still link to a nice one that I could get once things are back in stock.)

Not really. For dual video cards, you should go with at least 650 watts...maybe more, depending on the cards.

I have a CoolerMaster HAF 932 case. It's dead quiet even with the fans running...except when the fan on my GTX460 ramps up over about 50%...and even that's not terribly loud...until it gets to 70% or more...then it's pretty loud...but that rarely happens unless I do it intentionally.

I really do advise against getting two 3-4 year old GPU's they are outdated, and when they came out they were relatively underpowered. In today's world they are not even worth the $140 IMHO.

Good point. I haven't have a Radeon card in over 10 years. For the last 10 its been Nvidia stuff. Not saying one is better than the other. Just what I have had.
