Question New build: 5600X for 1440p gaming?

Despite reading and watching all the reviews about the 5600X, I'm not convinced it's the best choice for me. I'm building a new gaming PC around a high FPS 1440p monitor and 3080-class GPU. I was leaning towards the 10600K, and thought the 5600X would be the new sweet spot, but I'm not so sure anymore. Performance at 1440p across most games seems to be the same even with cheaper CPUs such as the 3600 or 10400 in the picture.
I'd love to continue to use an old XFX 750W PSU, so if the higher efficiency of the 5600X will make this possible vs. using a 10600K, then the extra expense of buying the AMD chip will be more than offset by the savings on the PSU.
Thoughts?

What games do you play? The 5600x is definitely the higher performer from what I've seen but it will depend on games, settings, etc. if you run into a GPU bottleneck or not.

If you are building from scratch, going with a 5600X and a 6800XT may get you some additional gains due to their SAM technology as well. What are motherboard costs? Would going with a B450 on the AMD side negate the CPU price difference (might not be supported until Jan though I think)? Cooler costs? You should be able to get by with a cheaper cooler since the 5600XT takes so little power.

PSU I don't think should be an issue between 10600K and 5600X though if you want to overclock the 10600K with a 3080 it might be a problem.

Some a some quick input/things to think about.

(Edit: additional comments)

From what I have seen the 5600x is the sweet spot, often beating Intels best. Though a 3080 will perform very well at 1440p, it seems like the 6800 performs better at that resolution than the 3080, but that's based on "leaks" so far and there are exceptions.

@Hitman928 : I've been playing COD Warzone exclusively since March. Other games I will be playing are from a backlog that I have in Steam (Civ V and VI, GTA V, Witcher 3, an older SotTR, etc.) Since I upgraded to a 1440p 165 Hz monitor in October, I am annoyed by the fact that I cannot play COD at 1440p (it's too slow).
I guess you could say I'm not building from scratch since I will be harvesting some parts from my current computer (Noctua NH-12S cooler, 750w XFX PSU, SSDs and HDDs), but the parts that matter for performance all need an upgrade: i5-4690K, DDR3 RAM, motherboard and GTX 1060 6 GB. I am very open to the AMD GPUs. Motherboard for AMD would be Asus ROG Strix B550-F Gaming.

I don't play that game and had a hard time finding CPU benchmarks for it. Your other games mentioned are a mixed bag in terms of CPU and GPU bottlenecks. I guess my question would be, since you own a higher refresh rate monitor, do you typically turn settings down to hit the higher refresh rates or do you try to max visual settings? If you always try to max visual settings, then the CPU becomes far less important, but if you want to buy high end and maybe turn down a couple settings to keep high refresh rate, then the CPU becomes more important.

Overall, in my opinion, since you are going with a $650+ GPU plus motherboard plus memory, the price of the CPU will not matter much in the overall system cost. Personally, I would go with the 5600x as it gives you top of the line gaming performance today and a platform that is a bit more future proof for a small percentage increase of the overall cost of the system. A 5600 would probably be an even better value, but we don't know how long it may be before those are available (if ever, but most likely they will come out at some point).

I'd get the 5600X. It seems like the best value for gaming of the new chips released so far, and I don't see the point in going for a 3600 if you have 165Hz ambitions.

@Hitman928 , in Call of Duty, I turn the video quality down so that I can hit 60-70 fps. I'd love to be able to play at 1440p (I can't currently) and at higher refresh rates.
Thank you for your feedback!

A 3080 would already be held back at 1440p in many games even with the fastest cpu out there so a 3600 would be an even bigger bottleneck in the cpu demanding games trying to push that much gpu power.
Welp, not according to the games I play, and I HAVE both CPU's and a 3080/2060. I am relaying real world usage, so no. I'd get a 3070 and a 3600 vs. a 5800x and a 2080.

Sorry but you have no idea what you're talking about. We have enough reviews out there and in fact those reviews even all mention how the 3080 is held back quite a bit at just 1440p and that is with the top of the line CPUs. You saying there's no problem for you doesn't change the actual facts. Perhaps run your own benchmarks with your CPU and then a 10900k and get back to me.

The raw performance of the 5600X should serve you well now and in the future if you can afford the $100 over the 3600. Personally, it's the choice I would make for a gaming rig if I also had the money to afford a 3080.

At 1440p the 3080 is held back (compared to 4k results) and it's highly likely the 6800XT will beat the 3080 at 1440p.

If you get a 5600X and a 500 series motherboard (550 or 570) then the value proposition of the AMD 6000 series GPUs increases as you can use SAM with it and get more performance for free.

So if it were me, I'd wait to see reviews of the 6000 series GPUs and especially how they work with 5000 series CPUs I think it's probable that AMD (CPU & GPU) will be the way to go for new builds.

Agreed. Just so long as the drivers are solid this time around. Much better chance that they will be compared to the 5000 series release, but it is the biggest concern many of us have.

I love it when people don't have the hardware.. I don't need to get back to you in regards to running a 10900k because I don't have one. You apparently never play DX9, DX10 games, but I guess that should be obvious since you don't have the gear. I'll say it again, I'd much rather get a 3600 & 3070 over a 5800x and a 2080.

And I love how people that have certain hardware make claims they can't substantiate. That's why we have tech sites that do in-depth controlled reviews instead of relying on any old nonsense that somebody spouts. And we were talking about the 3080 not the 3070. Whether you accept it or not does not change the actual facts that a 3080 would be more CPU limited with a Ryzen 3600 than a 5600x at 1440p.

@Bobsy

I play Warzone in 1440P with fairly high quality settings on my 3900x + Radeon VII, with the 3900x running at 4.4 GHz static OC (RAM is currently DDR4-3666 14-16-14-28). I run on a 144 MHz monitor, and I routinely max out my monitor's refresh rate. The game just doesn't seem that demanding. Realistically-speaking, the 5600X looks like a solid 4.6-4.7 GHz all-core OC on a good cooler, which is what I would shoot for if I wanted high-refresh gaming today. Unless you're just allergic to OC, in which case just run stock. It should be fine.

edit: I want to amend that my system was apparently rendering at a lower rez and upscaling. I set it to render at 1440p and framerates dropped a little, but still hover at around 100-110fps in most situations.

accept what or not? You're not making any sense. I never said that.. Jesus, learn to read.

Perhaps you are the one that should learn to read. The 3080 was the GPU level being talked about here and the CPU being talked about here was the 5600x and then you chimed in and said the 3600 would be your suggestion. And I told you that would be more of a bottleneck and then you argue about it. Well it's clear I found the most annoying and oblivious person on the forums.

BTW beware, This reviewer was having issues in Warzone (and only with 5600X, not with 5900X):

EDIT nevermind she did an update video:

If you have any issues just make sure that under the advanced_options file in my documents (see the video) the RenderWorkerCount setting is the number of physical cores you have (not logical). It might also improve performance on your current CPU (it also helps Intel). The difference is quite staggering on R5 5600X:

Did you actually get to buy one too?!? Lucky :p
My local store received six chips last Friday. Four went to people who had already paid for them, two went on the shelf (and were sold later that day). They also had stock online for a short while, but I had not yet made up my mind. Since then, I visited the store and paid for one. Now waiting for an email telling me they have received it.

I expect to get the chip before I can buy the motherboard. The Gigabyte B550 Aorus Pro AX ATX is not yet available anywhere...

So an incorrectly configured 5600x system gets 60% of its peak performance?

I know warzone is a pig (one of the first games to really need 12-16GB of ram IIRC) but wow. That's special. Hopefully they patch the game directly.

You replied to my post multiple times clearly stating 3600 + 3070. I'm done arguing with you. Good luck on your hunt for new gear.
