Cool.. Guess my next level, I'll switch over as a Wizard for a while. Wish they had spawn points to just get XP from.. 🙂

Love the game. Currently have a level 4 human Ranger. Quick question though.. if I changed class to say a Sorceror or Wizard when he goes to level 5, what could I do or what would happen? I then would switch back to being a Ranger at level 6 for animal companion.. I'm lost as this is the first D&D type game I've played.

Here's how 3rd edition rules work. You have 2 kinds of levels, class levels and character levels. You gain a class level of your choice each time you gain a character level.

If you take a Mage level next level, you keep all of your Ranger skills and HP, but you also gain the powers of a first level Mage.

There are 2 things to be aware of though. If your class levels are more than 1 level in difference, you will have a 20% XP penalty until they are within a level of each other. This does not come into effect if you only have 2 levels and your highest level is racially preferred (listed with races in the manual).

The second thing is there is a maximum of 20 character levels in Neverwinter Nights. If you divvied them evenly, the max you could obtain is 10 Ranger/ 10 Mage.

Love the game so far. However, I did want to point out that the single player module included is just a small, small part of what NWN will become. The most exciting aspect of the program is the toolset, and the ability for live, on-the-fly DMing of custom-created modules. It's basically pen and paper D&D on your computer. So NWN's full potential most likely won't be seen for at least a few months yet. Right now everyone's just getting acquainted with the program and such.

As for NWN being like Diablo 2: that's like comparing quake to Deus Ex, but an even grosser injustice. Diablo 2 isn't role-playing; it's killing lots of stuff en route to getting lots of powerful items. Nothing wrong with this, but just because you gain experience doesn't make it role-playing. NWN was built to be a role-playing game, and while the single player game of course can never take full advantage of NWN's roleplaying nature, the mp modules soon to come out can. Yes, you could make a module that would essentially turn NWN into Diablo 2 with less clicking (since your character attacks automatically rather than you having to constantly click for each sword swing). And that's the beauty of the game: it's whatever you want it to be. The flexibility is what makes it great.

//end NWN shpiel

Just picked it up today from BB for $26.00 (coupon and $25.00 gift card). I will not vote in the poll until I get it installed and play with it a bit.

I have a level 5 chaotic neutral fighter.. I gave her 18 strength and 14 charisma and spent some extra proficiency points on Persuade. She convinces people to give her all their money before she cleaves them in two. 😀

Wow, even my bard destroyed the dummies. Have you tried the scrolls, or are you trying to kill the physical attack dummies?

I like the game so far. That being said, I miss the Infinity engine. I don't think NWN's 3D engine can compete with the level of detail that the rendered scenes in BG2 had. This is on a P4/Ti4400 system too. Were the only reasons that Bioware created a 3D engine that it's easier and faster to build a game using it and that the game takes up less space? NWN looks good for what it is, but it's not the same.

Also, the third edition rules will take some getting used to. My big question: so clerics now have no weapon restrictions besides the simple/martial/exotic thing? I'm pissed that I made my fighter/cleric proficient in maces!

BDawg, the dummy in the wizzard room. Tried using the scrolls, memorizing them etc. The dummy won't die. He probably just needs to RTFM.

No, you can't graduate from the Academy because you're trying to complete the wrong training. You need to destroy a stone statue in the library.

I picked up the game about a week ago and love the CONCEPT. However, I, like many others, have a choppiness that just will not go away. I exceed EVERY recommended system spec, sometimes by a lot, and it still gets really bad during battles etc. There are a huge number of posts about this problem on the NWN forums over at Bioware's site, but nothing seems to be being done about the issue. I have a PIII 900, Asus CUV4X, 512MB Ram, 20GB 7200 HD, AND a BRAND NEW ASUS GeForce4 ti4200 o/c'd to 320core/560mem. I clean installed Win2k/updates/directx/drivers and the game after I thought it might be a software thing specific to my system, but nothing changed. The concensus seems to be that there is a caching/memory issue that loads sounds, triggers etc. as you approach them, not at the area load. It almost makes the game unplayable for me. Arrgh. If it weren't for the awesome content, I would have already taken it back. I hope there will be a patch adressing this issue in the future, but I wanted to warn others that this MAY occur with your copy of the game too, so be prepared. BTW the choppiness happens regardless of resolution, graphics quality settings, or antialiasing settings. At least I can crank everything and not make it any worse! haha. If anyone has any fixes for this PLEASE PLEASE let me know.

Thanks,
BOB

I just wish I could save the damn game. Ever since 1.19 it just freezes when I saved. And initially it took forever to get working w/ my video drivers. What I did play I found quite enjoyable. It's a little more hack and slashy than BG2, but I still like it. I just can't play it for the same lengths of time as BG2.

I just beat the game last night. Whoo. The last part gets pretty tough but considering my character's near-invincibility it wasn't THAT bad.

Where do I hire a Bard

huh??? NWN runs at a seemingly constant frame rate for me (which changes depending on the resolution). The only thing better about my system may be the CPU. WOW! My laptop is running something faster than your desktop! 😛 j/k.

As for what I think of the game... I got it a week and a half ago and I love it. It's the first game I've really gotten into since Diablo 2.

I'm probably going to buy this game this weekend. I'm pretty familiar with the D&D 3rd Edition rules, classes, and skills based on the paper version of the game.

In video games though, certain classes don't make them selves out to be as useful. Are there any single classes that stand out as overpowered, or underpowered in the game? Or did Bioware do a pretty good job of balancing out the classes?

I'm a huge fan of rogues in the 3rd edition of D&D, and would probably start out with a rouge in this game.

IMO, Fighters are a bit too tough in this game.
I beat the last few bosses within seconds, literally.
Improved Power Attack + Knockdown -> WHAM WHAM WHAM -> Knockdown ->WHAM WHAM WHAM -> Dead.

I was flipping through planetneverwinter and I saw the knockdown feat. There are NO requirements to use that feat! It looked to be a very, very easy way to get in a cheap shot. Hell, even a mage or a halfling with single digit strength could bum rush in and execute it knocking a high level fighter to the ground. Or, at least that was how it looked to work in the info sites that I was reading.

In the game, are there any saving throws that you can make to prevent a knockdown from happening to you?
