Neverwinter Nights impressions thread

Well, i picked it up a couple of days ago, and after being completely stunned by the game's complexity, am now starting to get into it. It took me well over an hour to create my first character, because i wanted to know what everything does. In the end i realised that "recommended" was pretty much the same thing i wanted anyway and chose it instead. First character was an Elven Wizard, but he didn't go very far - i hated him. Sure, he would be very powerful later on, and i would probably stick with him if NWN was an MMORPG, but it isn't, so i started over with a Human Barbarian, who is a LOT more fun to play.

Didn't get very far with him either yet - just created him an hour or two ago. Tried to save that poor guard that never returned from guard duty, but couldn't handle the second boss. Going back now, i think i'll either head to the Tavern or go on with the main quest and head to the Peninsula.

So far, the game looks good. Music is great, but dynamic music isn't very well implemented - when is it ever! Main complaint is that it's simply off when my character isn't in combat. Graphics are good, i love the shadows! Could be better of course, but i'm just very picky. The storyline sounds like it will be a blast!

Of course, i haven't played nearly long enough to judge the game, but if you think you have, go ahead and vote. Or you can save your vote for when you're ready to make the call in a couple of days.

$54.99 @ Target, I bought it and I love it. Currently playing a level 4 human bard. This is the best digital crack since Diablo II!

Alright, i got a couple of questions that i need answered:

- how do i use the double-bladed sword i looted of Lady Tanglebrook's corpse? Says in it's description that it requires "exotic" feats? What would those be?
- what to do with all the Fire Beetle bellies i collected?
- does my natural armor value add to the overall value? If so, should i put more points into Dexterity than Constitution?
- i already told my henchman to stay near me, but he doesn't listen. Whenever he sees an anemy, he runs toward him, gets swarmed and dies. Is there any way to make him stay near me at all times?
- is Taunt useful? I mean, i usually kill everyone with one or two hits - it's faster to do that than to use Taunt. Is it only meant to be used on bosses?
- how do i get to wear heavy armor, and should i?
- how do i move quickslot shortcuts to different slots, and how do i give my henchman a potion from the quickbar?

Greatly disappointed.

I expected so much more... I think my main problem with all these games is that there is virtually no skill involved in them, I hate games that require no skill, just time.

Warcraft 3 is a lot of fun though, approaching maximum fun limit for a blizzard game though.

It seems like aside from diablo 1 every blizzard game that comes out i cant play for more than a week or two.

What exactly are you disappointed with? Personally, i'm pretty happy with what i've seen so far. I expected so much less 😀 Wasn't even interested in the game up until the day it came out and all these people started saying how they can't wait to grab a copy.

As for Warcraft 3, i can't stand playing it singleplayer. I've been playing beta for months, and can only play retail online right now because playing against the PC isn't all that great. I heard the story was good, but it's still the same principle, build, build, build. Same thing online, but at least beating actual people is fun.

So far i'm loving it. Just started the 2nd part of the first act, and it took me 4 days to get here!
My only complaint would be that unless you walk around and avoid talking to NPC's, you will end up getting a LOT of quests very quickly, which will end up confusing you. Other than that, i'm loving the game. My level 10 wizard is kicking ass 🙂

the several quest thing happened to me, it confused me to a small extent. As for why I don't like the game, its not really a game to me more of an interactive movie. your just there to watch the story unfold and click a few times not really doing much.

Maleficus:

I would have to disagree. The game involves a lot more than just clicking a few times to reveal a story. This is NOTHING like watching a movie, IMO. Now, Metal Gear Solid on the other hand, was exactly like pressing a few buttons and watching a movie. I don't think NWN is like that, however.

DOACleric, people were complaining that playing a wixard is too hard in the beginning of the game. It seems you're doing ok. Any feedback on that?

Maybe a movie was a bad comparison, i just feel the game requires no skill. I detest mindless games so. 🙂

Anyway i'll see all you people later going on a wonderful trip to the frio river with my family, can't wait.

I've been reading up on this game a little bit and it looks cool, but could someone answer a few questions for me?

Is it like Diablo in the sense that you get experience points and then once your character advances you get points that you can allocate to certain skills?

How are spell handled (books, scrolls, special skills, etc)? Can all characters cast spells, or is it just the wizards?

Is it point and click like diablo was? Can you just click on an enemy and your character will engage him?

Is the skill tree like other RPG's? I played Baldur's Gate a little bit and if I remember correctly you're armor, strength, etc went from -10 to +10, is that what Neverwinter nights is like?

In the single player game do you get other computer controlled people to join you on your quest?

And last but not least, how "hard" is the game? I don't have the patience anymore to learn 1000 keys just so I can play a game. When I buy a game I like the controls to be non-complicated and easy to pick up.

Actually I haven't had any problems at all with my wizard. But I know a wizards weaknesses and so I picked a companion to balance him out (namely, a warrior). He does more of the brunt work for me while i stand back and cast spells.

NWN is much more complicated than Diablo (200+ page manual), yet its still very easy to pick up. Yes you can click on monsters to attack them, but if thats all you do, your going to die fast (depending on your class). Yes, as you level up you gain feats, skills, spells, etc. If you've ever played D&D, its exactly the same thing.

Spells can be cast from scrolls but the spell is wasted that way. The best way would be from a spellbook, where you get to cast a certain number of 'memorized' spells, based on what you've chosen and your level. Unlike diablo, you can't go around firing 100 fireballs in a row, drink a mana potion and do it over again.

AC no longer goes into the negatives. That was AD&D (ruleset 2). NWN uses ruleset 3 which is much easier to follow (higher AC = better).

Ask me anything else you'd like to know of PM me.

I can answer a couple of these questions:

The double-bladed sword needs the Exotic weapon feat in order to use. Choose it when you level up.

Natural armor level affects you no matter what armor you're wearing. It's independent of your armor and is based on your ability to move. That's why with heavier armor you get the added protection of the material, but because it's heavier it also slows you down.

I just let my henchman run wild, but have you tried telling him to guard you? That might work. Though bloodlust does seem to be inherent.

Heavy armor is also a feat you have to choose when leveling up.

Haha! The Peninsula prision is again un-liberated at the hands of my chaotic neutral 4th level (soon to be 5th) Bard! Taste cold harp!

The concept is the same, but there's a lot more than that to it in NWN.

How are spell handled (books, scrolls, special skills, etc)? Can all characters cast spells, or is it just the wizards?
Different classes have their own different spells. Some (wizards, sorcerers) more than others (paladins, bards). To learn a spell you need to find/buy a scroll inscribed with it.

Is it point and click like diablo was? Can you just click on an enemy and your character will engage him?
Yeah, basically. But there's more to it. You can learn things to make more than that out of it. For example, my Barbarian just learned Cleave, which gives him the ability to hit one enemy and immediately spring towards the next enemy and hit him, with no delay. He also has Barbarian Rage, which is kind of a spell that gives him increased strength for a short period of time, but can only be used once a day, so you have to know when to use it. There are other things too.

Is the skill tree like other RPG's? I played Baldur's Gate a little bit and if I remember correctly you're armor, strength, etc went from -10 to +10, is that what Neverwinter nights is like?
Some feats require others to be trained, but there is no skill tree per se, like in Diablo. Here you have abilities, skills and feats. Abilities are strength, dexterity, constitution, intelligence, wisdom and charisma. Skills can be raised as you go along. Hide, is a skill, as is Heal. The higher the skill, the more likely you are to succeed. Feats are additional abilities that you can pick up when you level, but cannot raise. Barbarian Rage is a feat, as is Cleave. You either have em or don't.

In the single player game do you get other computer controlled people to join you on your quest?
Yeah, some classes can raise dead to aid them, or summon certain creatures, and Familiars, which are customized personal pets - there is a large variety to choose from, anything from a gigantic dog that breathes fire to a fairy.

And last but not least, how "hard" is the game? I don't have the patience anymore to learn 1000 keys just so I can play a game. When I buy a game I like the controls to be non-complicated and easy to pick up.
The controls are very simple, not unlike Diablo. However, the game mechanics themselves are incredibly complex. If you want to really know what you're doing (how each ability affects certain skills for example), get ready to do a LOT of reading. Of course, there is always a "recommended" button, where you can get the computer to raise/choose abilities, skills and feats for you when you create your character and level.

So should i get the Heavy Armor feat? Does it require the Medium Armor feat to be trained, or did i just waste a point on that one?

Also, is the Exotic weapon feat worth training, or should i just sell off the sword?

In my opinion, this game will really begin to shine when more mods come out and so forth. The multiplayer in this game is a blast, but it's pretty laggy at this point. As soon as they clean up the netcode a bit and more multiplayer adventures with true gm's are made, this game will be phenomenal. I'm playing the single player and it ain't too shabby either 😉

Love the game. Currently have a level 4 human Ranger. Quick question though.. if I changed class to say a Sorceror or Wizard when he goes to level 5, what could I do or what would happen? I then would switch back to being a Ranger at level 6 for animal companion.. I'm lost as this is the first D&D type game I've played.

I'm not up on the 3rd edition rules, so I might be wrong here. But according to 2nd edition, you would start at "level 1" for your new class and advance from there. Then, if you switched back to Ranger, you would start advancing from wherever you left off.

So, if you went to level 5 Ranger, then changed to wizard. Advanced to level 3 so you get some level 2 spells, and then you could switch to ranger again and start at level 5 ranger, while keeping what you got from being a level 3 wizard.

Is that clear? Not sure if I explained it good.

I see. So if I switched to being a Wizard I'd retain all the skills/traits I know as a Ranger? I wonder how much XP it'd take to level up as a Wizard.. the same as a normal level 1 character, or as a level 4 character.

Yes, you would keep your skills. If there are any that come into conflict with your new class, your new class takes precedence (not sure if this happens anymore with 3rd edition rules, but in 2nd if you switched to wizard from, say, fighter you couldn't use armor even though your fighter could because the wizard wasn't allowed).

And you would start as a level 1 wizard, and advance as if you just started a level 1 wizard.
