NeverWinter Nights 2 installs some insane DRM on your PC!

the part at the end where it says "please understand that any securom app that uses UserData will rebuild this files"... so basically, if you run the program (NWN2 in this case) again, it will just make the folder and you'll be SOL again?😕

I see the file folders on my system, but I don't see this service running anywhere, either in Task Manager or in the Administrative Services applet. And since it hasn't actually effected my computer in any way, I don't think I will worry too much about it.

Apparently, it hasn't stopped people from pirating the game either because a quick search my regular BT haunts shows several NWN2 images up.

Since I've got a legal copy of the game, and the game's CD check is rumored to be removed in the upcoming 1.04 patch, its nothing to really worry about.

SecuROM? will install a Windows? service module called "User Access Service" (UAService) on your system. This is a standard interface commonly used by several other applications as well. It is no spyware or rootkit at all. This module has been developed to enable users without Windows? administrator rights the ability to access all SecuROM? features. Please be assured that this service is installed only for security and convenience purposes. Since it is a standard Windows? service, you can stop and delete this service, like any other Windows? service. If deleted, the access for non-administrator users to SecuROM? protected applications will be affected.

DRM (Digital Rights Management) Service
If a publisher implements the DRM (Digital Rights Management) features in SecuROM?, SecuROM? will create a "SecuROM" folder and registry keys on your system. These folders are used only for storage of license information. Please do not modify or delete these file. Otherwise you might be unable to run the protected application.

Important Additional Information
Several systems are said to use a root kit based DRM that makes it possible for viruses or other malicious programs ("malware") to use the root kit to hide content on a user's PC. In this way, a virus or other malware may remain undetected, even if updated anti-virus software is installed. Please note that SecuROM? does not use any root kit technology in its implementation

I am sorry, but this is bullcrap, any application that does what SecuROM 7 does is a freaking rootkit.

Define rootkit. From the links you posted, all it does is prevent a user from making a 1:1 copy of the software. Not really an overly big deal, since its already been circumvented.

Edit - Oh, I know we end users have the right to make backup copies of our software, however, in this case its a moot point. It would only take a phone call to the publisher with your legal CD key to get a replacement sent your way. Worst case scenario would have you dealing with a bone headed CSR and having to pay some shipping charges.

Run RootKit Revealer and watch the thing light up like a pinball machine.

Kaspersky does not like it and best of all.... it stays with you long after you remove the program that installed it!
Un-installing the game will not remove the registry entries either. They, along with the files that securom installs will remain on your computer even if you remove the game.

Thanks, I almost purchased this too. It seems laziness pays off after all.

nwn2 runs fine on my system: OC'ed sempron2800+, X850XT, 1gig DDR333

edit: YGPM Schadenfroh

Yeah, it's all hidden. Didn't know the program would re-build upon execute.

Not nice. Time to uninstall.

Edit: This probably explains why I've been getting registry errors (entries which needed to be rebuilt) over the last few weeks, when before I never had a single one.

PS: Used RegDelNull to remove the registry key, and my system shows up clean once again.

IIRC the SecuROM 7.x/rootkit will be installed only if you patch nwn2. The store version (1.0) has no SecuROM 7.x/rootkit.

EDIT: Yep, checked it and no SecuROM 7.x/rootkit for me. Thank god I didn't have the time to apply the patches yet

The really hilarious part, is it doesnt work.

😉

Alcohol 120% has absolutely no problems making 1:1 images and discs.

They are retarded for even trying, stop wasting money on this sh!t and hire a couple more people to crank out better patches. Thatll drive sales, not this BS.

No... The worst case scenario is that you spend 2 horus of your life on the phone. You will never get that back and also you will have to WAIT for the CD to be shipped to you and in addition to that you might have to pay shipping? Is this your idea of hassle free?

The point of SecuROM isn't stopping image creation, it's stopping the ability of using said images/copies for the purpose of playing the game (i.e. it checks the validity of the "Optical Media" being used to start the game).

What does the Xbox 360 have to do with anything?

As for the other, I hope you accidently drop the case of your CD's and run over them with your chair and crack them all. Then when you bitch and complain, I will just tell you should have been more 'careful'. - Geez, I guess some people can't understand that accidents can and do happen regardless of how well you take care of them and that is why they are called "accidents" and not "purposes".

In addition to that, many members on this forum take great care of their DVD's so much that they make a copy (when they can) and put the original in a safe place. Why is that so wrong?

WTH am I doing wrong with Alcohol 120%. I can't get any images to work. I'm not even trying to burn a copy. I'm just trying to play off the mounted image so I don't have to disk swap.

Are there any web sites I can go to find out how to run Alcohol? I'd sure like to know what I am missing.

Are you using the latest version? I hear the latest version of Alc 120% does it fine.

you sure make lots of excuses for this awful game and have been defending it since it was released Nov1 as an unfinished beta ... are you somehow 'related' to this game?
😛

Atari is Suck in my book and this crap is unforgivable

i guess i'll finish the damn thing ... reinstall my OS and toss NWN2 in the Trash since i won't be able to play any mods in the future. :|

i sure hope they fail financially with this game ... how are they 'taking it' on the Official Forums?

He has no affection for the game specifically, he's just a huge Sony fanboy. He jumps in any thread even remotely mentioning them, often derailing threads in his tireless, fanatical defense of the brand. He doesn't spare their competition either, jumping in those threads as well to put them down and promote Sony. World of Warcraft has been a favorite target of his. He probably works for Sony or owns a lot of stock.

As opposed to the person who jumps in every thread even remotely related to Sony with the sole intent to bash Sony? When have I ever directly promoted Sony, btw? I give credit when credit is due and insults when they are due, which is why I clash with yourself a lot.

For the record, I stay out of threads related to Planetside, SWG, and MxO because I've never played those games. PS3 threads are also mostly avoided because I really don't care that much about consoles. I bash WoW because the game is utter garbage and filled with 12 year old idiots, not exactly my play style.

I don't work for Sony, Atari, Obsidian, or Bioware. But I do know a game with a lot of potential and a great deal of quality, and a great deal of potential still untapped. NWN2 is the best RPG released in 2006, hands down. Granted its competition was limited to Oblivion and G3, but technically those were just FPS games with RPG elements and a 3rd person perspective available.

When NWN1 was released, people railed against the bugs and condemned Atari for pushing out an unfinished title. Today, NWN1 is considered one of the best RPG titles ever created with perhaps hundreds of thousands of play hours and modules to suit every players taste. NWN2 cannot be expected to equal that a mere 3 months after its release. Obsidian is fixing the bugs, as evident from their patches and stance in the community forums. Give NWN2 a year and you'll see plenty of content to slate your appetites. A quick spot check of the NWN2 modules forum reveals several promising modules already in development.

NWN2 is a juvenile game whose visionless Story is developed by a committee and not worthy to stand in the same company as KotOR, for an example.

sadly ... perhaps it is the "best RPG of '06" as there were NO others. Gothic3 and Oblivion are NOT 'party RPGs' and cannot be compared [period]. i don't care how NWN1 is regarded anymore than i care about Gothic2 or TES:III ... that point is MOOT.

i don't care to wait for the fans to fix crap ... and they cannot fix the hidden insidious garbage that Sony installed on my PC
