I wrote the OP and the first few replies in a fit of rage that might have clouded my judgment.

It is invasive and problematic DRM, but maybe not quite a rootkit, that is... if you are to believe Sony:

Sony's statement
SecuROM? does not use any root kit technology in its implementation.

PS: I've never had any sort of problems from SecuROM. Sorry for those of you that have. Or.... have none of you had problems, and are just worried about SecuROM because it's from sony?
