I bet, he tried to walk out of Best Buy with 60" Plasma TV in his pants

"Sir, is that a 60" Plasma TV in your pants?"
"No, it's just my floppy drive."

I'm not a lawyer, but:

Write a formal letter of apology (real one not e-mail, and watch your language). If it's sincere it could improve your chances of this going away. Keep a copy in case it doesn't.

A friend of mine got into trouble with the law (a very funny story that I might tell someday), but the "victims" did not want to press charges. My friend was trying to get into Med school, so it was pretty important that he have a clean record. However, since a cop had observed direct evidence that my friend had committed the crime, he went ahead and pressed charges. They even went to court. My friend's lawyer went over to the prosecuting attorney's, explained the situation to them, and got a deal while they were laughing their butts off. He ended up getting off with a fine or a little community service, can't recall.

But my point is, that if the coppers saw you do it or otherwise have direct evidence against you, then they may press charges themselves. I'm not sure how it all works tho.

If you do this, send it by registered mail.

Yes, my dad was injured by a crazy person who decided to back into him with a car when she shoplifted from his business long ago.

We were going to press charges but we dropped it after she wrote a sincere letter and my dad is a forgiving man.

the guy that got the cop was the only person that saw it . if the cop wanted to press charges, id be in jail right now :(

I was thinking the same thing. Nothing like a good note - maybe, that would keep them from pressing charges.

You're "safe".

If they told the cop they weren't gonna press charges, they aren't very likely to change their mind . . . no "damage" was really done to them (since you we're caught).

Forget the letter and LEARN your LESSON. ;)

Why did you want to take the shift nob off a benz, are you some kinda moron? If your going to commit a crime at least do one you have a chance at getting away with.

Heh...the NAIAS?? If so, I was probably there today the same time you were. Every car I saw already had all knobs, dials, etc. removed though  ESPECIALLY the shift knobs. Whether the event organizers removed them beforehand, or the people at the show removed them themselves, I don't know though. Unless you're talking about a completely different event.

I don't know the consequences of doing something like that though. I wouldn't imagine it would be too serious, but who knows.
