So you're convinced it'll be something completely different, huh. Yeah, I don't know how they're ever going to top "Core". Wow, what a doozy that one was. The pinnacle of creativity, to be sure :p.

What about "Ion"? It's just about as stupidly simple, meaningless, and short as "Core".

You know when AMD went from having that wicked cool "sledgehammer" codename to calling it "Opteron" for marketing I absolutely gave up ever trying to guess how badly farked up the marketing teams will name things.

Sempron? Celeron? Really guys, that's the best you can do with your liveral arts degrees? When does Moron get released?

We are guaranteed whatever Intel names Nehalem we will all go "oh that is f'cking tarded" and then we'll promptly move on to the more enjoyable aspects of the AMD vs Intel debates.

Core-name for processor that isn't Core-architecture would be confusing.

Adding my two cents:
Intel will surprise us and name it Pentium 5 !

Branding/marketing has nothing to do with what's under the hood. The Pentium 1, 2, and 4 are nothing alike, but Intel stuck with a successful brand name. (The "Pentium-M" was an entirely new design team, and the basis for Core!)

Also note that "Pent" is the prefix for the number 5, and represented what would have otherwise been called the Intel 586 Processor. The Pentium-II, built on prior Pentium Pro designs, would be the 686. And so on, except they changed to a new naming scheme.

The name Pentium has run its course, and now represents old technology. Core is its shiny new replacement, and Core products are a HUGE success in every way. We will have this name for several more product generations.

Figuring as they've come up with Atom, I see Molecule in the future but that may be too many syllables for Intel.

Do you really think "sledgehammer" appeals to the kind of people they're trying to sell opterons to?

I think Core 3 would put some confusion as to how many cores are on the cpu. It would either have to be an entire new name or a change of the suffix derivative.

Well anyone with half a brain would remember the Core Duo that made it to mac's and laptops. The Core 2 Duo is the further design. I would think a Core 3 would be right on par and then they can just tag the core design at the end of that.

it probably will still be core 2 seeing they haven't done the monolithic design like AMD's true quad core

Nehalem will indeed be a monolithic design.. multi-core on one piece of silicon.

I very much doubt that the people who make purchasing decisions in the market segment to which Opteron is targeted could give a dam what the chip is called.

My point was that "sledgehammer" meant something positive to some people (enthusiasts) and meant nothing to other people (purchasers in server segment) whereas "opteron" meant nothing to everyone.

At least sledgehammer carried with it the connotation of a chip that was intended to get a job done with prejudice at a time when AMD needed to drive an image of such while attempting to break into new market segments.

Yes I have. I find it to be very funny.
I still think my idea for it's name is most likely.
