Core 2 Trio

I believe Intel will reserve the honors of incrementing the Core # from 2 to 3 for the successor to Nehalem-C (Westmere) which is currently codenamed Sandy Bridge.

it probably will still be core 2 seeing they haven't done the monolithic design like AMD's true quad core

then again, Nehalem is suppose to debut with more than 4 cores *thought i heard 8* so maybe something like Core2x2 who knows 4x4? what ever

Some solid Nehalem info: http://arstechnica.com/article...know-about-nehalem.ars

and yes, it will be available with an IMC.

Sounds about right... but why would intel have us counting by the spanish numbering system, just looked and its cuatro but Quattro would be more marketable

EDIT: yeah, the 2X2 and 4X4 would sound too amd-ish plus the overtones of the jeep wrangler are not good

good reads Scotteq

Core 3 Quattro - why would they keep "Core 2" when it's a new generation? Isn't the point of "Tick-Tock" to focus on generational improvements? The only thing that should be kept constant is "Core" since that's really the marketing/branding term. The "2" or my proposed "3" is the actual processor line.

that would start getting confusing like nVidia ended up

The name will depend on the continuing marketing prospects of the Penryn based CPU's while Nehalem based CPU's are pushed into the server segment.

If Intel finds itself in the situation where it does not want to push volumes of 45nm Nehalem at the desktop and laptop market segments because of gross margin reasons (2X larger die means much lower yields, 32nm shrink will bring back those yields) then they certainly will not want to seed the populace with the notion that they are buying last year's technology when they continue to buy Penryn chips.

They didn't get rid of Pentium4 brand when they migrated to hyperthreading and even MCM'ed dualcores. They won't get rid of Core 2 brand just because of IMC and hyperthreading.

Isn't "Core" the actual brand name? There were some products that did not include a "2." I assume Nehalem will simply be Core3.

Model numbers have used up most digits, so it can't be another Core2. (1000, 2000, 4000, 6000, 7000, 8000, 9000)

I think Core 3 would put some confusion as to how many cores are on the cpu. It would either have to be an entire new name or a change of the suffix derivative.

They already have Core 2 Quads so I don't see why .

Core 3 doesn't strike me, i would be surprised if they went with that name.

Funny, I would be surprised if they didn't go along with that name.

Yeah seriously. Why does everyone think it won't be Core 3? It's a big enough of a change from Core 2 to warrant a suffix increment. The "Core" moniker is worth keeping because the public has a pretty positive perception of the Core branding so far.

That's perhaps the most succinct and compelling argument one can have against "Core 2 (plus something)" being used for the Nehalem product line.

I just don't see Core 3 being used for simple marketing reasons as it will look like the chips are intended to compete against AMD's X3's.

Personally I think they should go with "Molecule" to play off of the "Atom" product line. (joking)
