Beer pong?

Well no thanks, don't drink beer.

It would be a nice drive from here to Chicago if I could make it.

I would be interested in hitting up Wrigley Field more than anything probably.

What, exactly, are you planning to "do" for the event? Conference room for what?

I'm not too keen on the $100+/night for hotels though. That's pretty ridiculous. Any BLM/State land or anything nearby I could camp at?

Yeah, I would consider camping, too. Though I don't mind the hotel, especially since its two nights, and we'd put at least 2 to a room, so the price would be split.

there are some things the poor are just meant to be excluded from.

If you are going to consider camping you should consider chaperones then lolz.

Hey, stuff it asshole.

If you want to waste money, that's fine with me. I see no point in paying that much for a room just for some "Nef-Con". Now if I was taking my GF somewhere, that's different. I can easily afford it. Hell I could just get a nice $300/night room. But what's the point? Waste of resources in my opinion. I'd rather do something fun with the money instead of wasting it on a stupid room to sleep in, no matter how decorative or plush or whatever. I don't care, just give me a bed under the stars and I'm fine. Just because you can't appreciate my lifestyle doesn't make me poor.

I happen to enjoy camping, and early August I would expect is a nice time to do so in that area. Camping on the lake would be fun to me, more so than staying in some hotel room. If you want to relegate yourself to that boring life, go ahead. I prefer to live a bit while I'm alive.

we have to pick something neutral that everyone would be ok with, even if it is 'boring' to others, and camping is not neutral. if we went camping, that would limit everything we can do to camping activities, while at least staying at a hotel, we can take advantage of the city and venue. It's only for 2 days, so splurge a little.

From my experience, the difference between a good trip and a bad one is more affected by the people you meet than the environment/what you do. I've been to Kyrgyzstan and met so many amazing people while looking around, and then went to London and just took pictures of monuments solo. So paying for a nef con venue could actually be a good idea as it can help foster community.

So can we have some discussion on the pricing? The way I see it, the most viable options are this.

Everyone gets themselves to Chicago by their own means of transportation, and we all setup to meet at a specific location at a specific time to kick off the conference (opening ceremonies anyone?):

Then:

1) We all stay at the same hotel, which has been prepaid by each person to include the 2 or 3 night stays and the conference room, and the food during the conference room. We have a meeting in the conference room/hall, which will be catered, and Beer Pong, LLC will come in and host a Beer Pong Tournament. We can also have a lot of other things going on - guess the member, etc. etc. Then, the other events can be outdoors - perhaps a football or softball game in a park (lifers vs. peons?). We can meet up at a restaurant for a dinner (where people will pay their own bill), and other than that people can have time to do their own thing. The cost would be something like $300-400/person, which would include two nights at the hotel (or three if we vote on that), a portion of the conference room and catering fee, and an activity fee, which would cover things like renting equipment for the softball game, or buying other things we would need. And of course, at the end of NefCon, any remaining money would be refunded to people. We could save some money by allowing some ATers who so choose to share a room with another ATer. Depending on how many people signed up, we may be able to let a few people coming NOT stay at the hotel, and perhaps only offer the group rate at the hotel for those who don't wish to camp, etc.

2) Everyone does their own thing. You can stay at the hotel you wish, and there will just be set activities and set fees for those activities. For instance, to come to the conference room portion of the conference, you would pay $100 (a random number but I can't see it being that much more), which would cover the beer pong for the night, your share of the catered food, costs of prizes (we would give away a free ipod or something, or perhaps we could have a contest for complimentary lifer status or something if the mods are up for it).

It seems the third option, which would be all-inclusive, has fallen out, and I think everyone else agrees these are just about the only two options.

No no, I'm not saying everyone camp. But I wouldn't mind camping myself and just driving to wherever we're meeting. I realize not everyone likes camping and I'm not suggesting that's what we plan this as - just curious about doing that myself.

I've never played beer pong, so I voted no to that part.

This. I think getting a venue is a no-brainer. The question at this point is do we get the venue AT the hotel where 95-98% of the conference attendees will also stay? Odin, you know I like camping, and I'd be willing to hang around a few extra days AFTER the conference ends if you could swing it to go camping with you again. The lake does sound amazing. But I really think for the two or three days of the conference, it would be good for everyone to be near each other.

Not too many camping areas near Schaumburg.
I can get you a list if that is an option you really want.
I'm guessing maybe a 45 minute to hour drive to and from a campsite.

Remember people, that hotel is JUST a suggestion. There are hotels downtown, too, which are a bit more expensive per night, but we won't have to pay for transportation to/from downtown, which can save us a pretty penny.

If you stay in that area and people are interested in horse racing, Arlington Park is only a few miles away.
I forget the cost, but for around $50 a person you can get a group into the million dollar club (upper level) with food and drink included. I do a family event every year there and it is a good time, even if you are not a gambler.

If I come, I'll have my own vehicle. I probably won't fly.

We can do this one night, too, if we wanted to. I say we create a list of possible events and then vote on what to do.
