Need strong tiny magnets

glen

Lifer
Typical refrigerator magnets are so weak they barely hold themselves up.
What kinds of magnets are really strong?
Do you know of a place that might sell them for a decent price?

Edmund Scientific sells an assortment of magnets.

oh, neodymium are the strongest. The higher the gauss, the stronger it is.

Also intersted in this. Dropped a key into the bush, one of those (do not make duplicate keys) and need to find it. Already looked, but no luck. Will a strong magnet/metal dector work?

Neodymium magnets are what you need, hit up ebay for cheap ones. Or if you have some broken hard drives laying around, rip em open and find them (shiny metal looking semi-circles)

Edmunds may be a bit pricey. If you have any old speakers, even small ones from old toys or something the magnets from those are very powerful.

This is what you need 😀

We are proud to offer a super powerful nickel-plated Neodymium Iron Boron block magnet of very impressive size and strength. One of these magnets will lift over 100 pounds of iron! These are abnormally strong magnets, and serious care must be taken in storing and handling them. Being block magnets, these have sharp corners like TEETH, and being large, they have vicious
attraction to one another like JAWS. When they come together, they do not let go easily. Make a mistake with these and you will probably bleed. Like all sintered Neodymium magnets, these are
somewhat brittle. Not for children...obviously...and not for toys. If you have not handled Neodymium magnets before, please order something smaller so you understand the dangers here. One of these will noticably distort a computer monitor from over 30" away. Keep these well away from electronics, and magnetic storage medium. Don't buy these if you have a pacemaker. We take no responsibility for injury, or property damage resulting from the mis-handling of this, or any other magnet we have to offer.

Holy sh!t.... it can lift 100 lbs. of metal :Q

It can affect your monitor from 30" away :Q

Rare earth magnets are where its at.
If you have some old hard drives, just take them apart. Each one has a couple super-strong magnets in it.

Exactly. I saw one page once where they wouldn't sell to the general public becuase they were uncoated and therefore fragile enough to shatter when they smashed together. I think they would also do a job on fingers.

It's the truth..I once took apart an old hard drive for the Nd magnets and started playing aroound with them when all of a sudden they just came together and pinched one of my fingers.

i have a bunch of tiny little square ones, a friend of mine had a job at a place that built some part for audi and he gave me about a dozen of them

they're great, but it takes a pair of pliers to get them off the fridge (or sliding them to the edge works if done fast enough)

How large?
I bought these:

I hope they are strong enough to hold up pictures on the fridge.
Are the one that require a pair of pliers to remove this small?

Smaller

I think this is what i have
i'm gonna call my friend tomorow and see if he still has access to them - if he does, i'll see how many he can hook me up with 🙂

Doh!

I'm sure the ones you purchases will be plenty strong...
in fact, with how thin they look, you'll probably need to slide them off the edge of the fridge to get them off

I have some of those neodymium magnets. They are strong enough that they can rip off the outer plating that covers them. I used them to shoot ball bearings. Pretty cool stuff. I havent had any problems with them corrupting on my hard drive yet, but i am careful in keeping them away from the case. Closest they have been is about 2-3 feet to monitor, and farther to computer
Have fun with what ever you are doing.

edit: and yes they do hurt if you get your fingers caught in between them snapping back in place.

It started as a joke.
A girl drew a silly picture, and so we put it on the fridge.
Then another girl brought us a picture.
Now, it is a contest, and the girls are outdoing each other and sleeping with us to get a better position on our fridge. The latest one is make out of construction paper, and glue, and it is not ecaxtly flat, and it won't stay on the fridge, so I need a stronger magnet.

Hehe...Good contest.

Since you probably don't want to wait for a magnet to be shipped to you, make an electromagnet. You probably already have all the stuff to make an electromagnet. Wire, metal rod/nail and a power source.
