I'm pretty sure my ipod is dead...

It's refurbished...as under warrenty I had to twice get my 4th gen 40gig replaced for the low battery life.

What happened after warrenty, is if the battery dropped too far I would get the unhappy ipod icon with exclamation point, and then it would go to that not very full battery icon...then eventually restarting with the apple logo..etc.

I forget what I did from there...it was either leave it in wall charger for a day or two, or leave it in usb charger for a day or two.

Eventually, (once the thing had a full charge) I was able to plug the ipod into either the computer or wall (sorry can't remember the order) and then I wouldn't get the unhappy icon anymore, but everything normal with full charge.

However, my battery life was crappy again. So I bought a replacement battery from here the Newer technology/nu power one

Everything went well and I was getting pretty good battery life, I think around 8-10 hrs...can't remember what I tested it as. However, I still had the same problem of when the battery life was drained/too low...I would get the exclamation point. For a little while, the same trick of charging it up worked...

Also, before it died again/ I was getting file corruption problems...and I used to get occasional freezings before/after battery replacement.

it has been months now and ipod no longer works: It's just forever, whatever power source I use, the apple icon/exclamation point/low battery icon/ repeat.

---

I'm wondering if it's a circuit board thing, or I killed the hardrive if it's even worth to mess with it anymore. I figure any money I'd spend...it'd probably be better off just taking it back to apple and getting the discount + student discount and getting a video.

: (, i miss my baby.

Well first thing the reason you got the little battery icon is because when the battery drains on an iPod, when you hook it up to the computer via USB, USB doesn't instantly power it. The iPod has to first get booted up and communicate with the computer before it starts getting charged, which is why when you charged it up with a car adapter it worked fine when you hooked it up to the computer.

My advice is hook it up to a power source (car adapter, wall adapter, just something other than the computer) and hold down the middle button and the menu button at the same time. That restarts the ipod.

Try that and see if you get any results.

hmm...this is promising.

I still get the same ipod exclamation point, but now the battery has an exclamation point.

More importantly, I'm getting that *crying* click sound from the hardrive...this is what used to happen...whereas for a long long time it wouldn't be making any noise and obviously, no amount of charging did anything.

I guess I'll leave it in the wall for a couple of days and see what happens.

I still would like to know why the ipod faulters when battery life is low..

Thanks for your help kind sir.

Well when the battery is low or doesn't have enough power to spin up the hard drive, the Operating system for the iPod can't be loaded and it can't be used.

The fact that the hard drive is clicking isn't good, but let it charge for a few hours and try it again.

Here's a good question for you...... I purchased a 1GB Nano when they were first released a couple of months ago. My first ever iPod. For some reason, the album art is wrong 50% of the time. The wrong album art will show for the wrong songs all the time. What's wrong?

Where are you getting the songs from? iTunes? Ripping them? Downloaded them?

Are they whole albums or just individual songs.

There used to be a program that would automatically update the album art but I believe it was only for mac.

well clicking stopped : P

Yah, I figured as much with the os and what not. I just figured there'd be some mechanism in place so the level would never get that low.

Well the battery drains to absolutely nothing if you don't use it for a week as well. Just because the thing is off doesn't mean it isn't using any power.

So you mean to say it spun up and and did it's little accessing the hard drive bit at the beginning and shut down again or what?

yes, I could hear the hardrive spin up...it wouldn't shutdown, just sort of reset itself after a few seconds and try again.

Yah, I know it isn't using any power, but I'm pretty damn sure there's like a deep deep sleep so that the Ipod will have the minimum amount of power necessary to boot up correctly.

I'm wondering if there's something messed up with the circuitry though? Could there be something faulty that's causing the battery to not go into conserve mode...which might explain why batteries are being eaten alive so to speak and why it drains too much?

I bought some Ice Creme for my iPod video that I bought off of ebay, and it does work, however you end up spending nearly 2 hours trying to polish out the scratches (and you end up with an incredibly sore arm the next day)

2 hours? Dang...does it come out as shiny as it was originally? It makes me mad, cause I bought my Vision:M on Sunday, and it's Friday and scratched...

They need to be charged like every week. I was reading about the batteries and apple suggests that when you aren't using it you should plug it in and you're supposed to let the battery fully drain at least once a month.

Also what eats the battery power like mad is if you've got your equalizer set to anything other than off (uses processing power which eats up the battery)

It leaves small swirl looking scratches but nothing as bad as the scratches beforehand.

I personally don't think it's worth it because it takes way too much time.

Sorry, forgot to mention that. Surprisingly, all my music is purchased, so all album art is coming from purchased music in iTunes. Everything displays correctly in iTunes, but once it's in the Nano, it gets screwy.

I would recommend restoring your ipod (as long as you have all your purchased music still on your computer or backed up somewhere)

Once you restore it (run the ipod program ipod updater) copy the music back onto it and it should fix it.

Make sure you have the newest version of the ipod updater in case any newer software has been put out for your nano

Could be that the clickwheel gets stuck due to something that got on there that's sticky (especially where the surface of the clickwheel goes below the the actual surface of the faceplate of the ipod, otherwise the clickwheel has been damaged.

You can get a whole new faceplate off of ebay for $24.99 + shipping. It's kind of hard to change it out (actually it's really hard) but it can be done if you've got patience and the correct tools.

I've got a spare 5G clickwheel if you wanted to work out a deal, or you could send yours to me and I could diagnose it and replace it if you wanted.

Let me know!

Did you use regular Ice Creme or Ice Creme M ???

My very old Shuffle only plays in one channel if I push the headphone plug in all the way, but plays in both channels when I pull it out a little ways...Any ideas?

I'd like to start with taking it apart but don't know how to do that.

How do you format a Ipod? Do you just format it like any other Windows XP drive under Disk Management?
