OK guys, the OP went ahead and bought a GPU :p

Next up, we should try to help the OP get the most out of the 1070 in terms of overclocking and whatnot. Anybody around here have the same model that the OP got?

download gigabyte overclocking utility.
set temperature target at 90
set power at 124%
up voltage a notch or 2
set fan profile at 40% and have it max at 65%
bring it up 100 core to start, and then up it 10 core until it crashes.
bring it back down 15 core, leave it.
up the memory 300 to start, and then up it 15 at a time till you see artifacts.
thats what i did with my 960,and it happily runs 1550 core.

it should work for his 1070.

or try this

I decided spending a little more because im thinking of getting a 1440p monitor soon aswell as the price. Im confident this card will last me a good 3 years

Ya, best decision you could make on a card at this time, for your plans. Killer price, too.

Definitely spring for a CPU that can overlock. I thought I'd be fine with my i5 2500 getting a 1060, but alas. I'm bottlenecked in WoW and can't get past 45fps at 1080p in anything but older content.

If I were you, I'd check this monitor out:

https://www.amazon.com/Dell-Gaming-...ie=UTF8&qid=1472832438&sr=1-4&keywords=pg279q

It's 27", 2560x1440, 144Hz, and G-Sync. It's a TN panel, so the upside is that it's got a ridiculously fast response time; downside is that viewing angles/colors aren't as nice as an IPS-type panel. It's a bit pricey at $549 but a monitor is something you probably don't want to cheap out on unless you HAVE to buy right now and are on an inflexible budget.

A 2500K overclocked is perfect for todays gaming. WOW is an older game and I ran it on a cpu and vpu way worse than that maxed out and getting crazy fps. I think something is wrong with your pc. That just sounds off to me.

I have a 2500K with a GTX 980 in my other gaming rig (which my daughter has kinda taken over lol) and that CPU doesn't bottle neck at all. It runs at 4.3GHz though.

You having the stock 2500 non K shouldn't effect your performance in WoW to that degree. When I played WoW I was on a dual core cpu (E4300) with a AMD 4800. I could play WoW maxed out at 1080p with great fps.

Google:
NVIDIA G-SYNC is groundbreaking new display technology that delivers the smoothest and fastest gaming experience ever. G-SYNC's revolutionary performance is achieved by synchronizing display refresh rates to the GPU in your GeForce GTX-powered PC, eliminating screen tearing and minimizing display stutter and input lag.

I'm guessing there's a big difference between 3.3ghz and 4.3ghz for a cpu limited game like WoW. Inversely, my performance probably would have been mind blowing a month ago but Legion changes coupled with triple terrain distance probably increased the load on the CPU dramatically.

I'm not so sure. A quad core CPU at 3.3 GHz should be plenty for that game even in it's updated form. Back when I played it was on an E4300 which was a dual core cpu. I dunno...it just seems odd that with a 2500 & 1060 you can't get over 45fps. If you were a friend of mine (locally) I would have you bring me the PC so I could figure out the issue.

A quad core doesn't really help it per se because it doesn't even fully utilize two threads much less four. I think a 4.3ghz dual core sandy would do better than a 3.3ghz quad like the 2500. Way back in Wrath my Core 2 Duo E6750 and x1950xt destroyed this game but it's a testament to how much higher the requirements have been made with Legion.

Also, it can technically go above 45fps. But we're talking Vanilla/tbc/wrath areas where I'm all alone where I see 130fps. Once I'm in any city like Stormwind or shield it drops to 42-45 once other players are near. During invasions it dipped all the way to 22-30 while bringing down the demon lord. But then again that was some crazy ****.

The GTX 1060 6GB seems like the best option, as much as it pains me to reccomend Nvidia(as they've been ramping up prices and doing shady tactics(470, 1060 3gb)) you can actually find few cards that are $270 and as such offer good value compared to the competition. Unfortunately most 1060 6GB are $300 or more and most 480 8GB are $270 or more.

480 or 1060 are you answers. If your goal is BF1 and such I'd wait until the game is out and see which performs better. Both are going to be around $250. However, do not expect ultra settings with 60fps mins with only a $300 budget for a gpu let alone whatever cpu you chose to go with.

On the BF1 open beta I'm getting roughly 85 fps on my GTX 970 (at stock) at 1080p ultra, so it might not be too unrealistic to expect 60 fps minimums with a GTX 1060 which is about 10-15% more powerful than a 970.
