Torrent ?
downloaded: 10 megs uploaded: 17 megs bleh
Why would you care about how much you upload as long as it's coming to you ? I think mine ended up being 224MB downloaded and 350MB uploaded. It's not like it's costing you anything.
They can make me upload a gig for all I care, I dont' see why it takes them 1/2 a second after I start the torrent for me to be sending 30kb out and it takes 5 minutes before they connect me to someone sending over 5.

You can't do it in the demo, but it's advertising how you can upgrade licensed parts with everything from neon underbodies to whatever else ricers do to soup up their ride. They mentioned quite a few things under the hood too - but I'm no car junkie.

From the get-go... I felt I was lining up in that Fast and The Furious scene. 350Z all set to go. The gameplay was pretty loose... much less "strict" as in previous NFS'... the audio was great... even makes the NOS sounds when you trigger it.

There was a DRAG mode... which can get pretty intense. The screen shakes as you barrel down the street against four other ricers in a straightaway that requires you to shift at the right time while avoiding cars coming from the sidestreets. One mistake... and you're "TOTALED!"

I think this one will do better than the rice-haters would like... I know I'll be checking out the full version when it becomes available.
Great summary. The Drag is what sold me on this game. I hate the fact of the crossing cars and the stupid jump over the train at the end (in the PS2 demo anyway), so I'm hoping they'll have some drag levels without all the extra crap, and just focusing on shifting.

Building your own car, then doing a drag race against 3 other people online? Hells ya. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe PS2 and PC owners can race against each other.....not sure though.

Wait - wait - wait a second. There's a race game with realistic damage modelling? TITLE! NOW! All I've ever seen out of a driving game is no damage (Virtually everything) and too much damage (GTA3). Vice City comes much closer to realistic damage modelling - but the cars will still take a lot more than they should before exploding (Also very unrealistic - they should sit there and burn for awhile, or just become undrivable because you've ripped the engine to shreds and/or been driving on rims for the past 20 miles) Although there is a certain pleasure to be derived from sliding sideways down a street at 90MPH with all your tires popped, hitting a police roadblock and doing a triple backflip... But it isn't realistic.

GT3 pisses me off - there are NO entry level cars thanks to the used car dealerships having been removed. You have to start driving in a frickin' Miata or VW Beetle (If I recall, those are literally your ONLY starting choices)

TOCA Race Driver, Carmageddon series, and NASCAR come to mind.

It doesn't even have to be functional damage... even PGR for XBOX was good enough for me.

Just something about running into a house at 90mph doing nothing but stopping you in your tracks that doesn't sit well with me.

Exactly... Crappy handling (worse than midnight club 2) stupid looking cars... What an awful game.

On the other hand, I loved NFS HP2. W/ a Wingman RUmblepad, it was a joy to play... unfortunately the controls aren't the same for underground, and I can't use my second joystick as the throttle. BTW, I thought Midnight Club 2 was pretty sweet, both graphics and gameplay wise, until I got NFS HP2, which blew it away. BTW, the graphics in Underground aren't that great.... I think NFS HP2 actually looked better. Maybe it's just that there are no good cars to look at... bleh.

Total dissappointment.

I think the handling is fine. It's arcadey, just like it should be. I'm not sure if the control feels different from the PS2 Dualshock and a PC (I'm sure it does), but I don't mind the controls at all. They're very accessible to begineers, which is what I think they are going for.

And what's not to like about a jump on a bridge? And what "80ies" about the drag mode? As far as my knowledge, it's never been done in a big-budget game before, and it a great addition to tweak your car under the hood.

You could do that with Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed.

That is STILL the best of the series IMHO. The original was excellent as well.

True, you can't beat the original one. I have fond memories of first seeing that game on a mint 3D0 demo system at Best Buy. I fell in love, but my parents weren't about to spring the $700 some-odd dollars for the thing.

Then, my mom finally got a computer, a Pentium75 w/ 16MB of RAM. It was a chore to get my parents to buy the game, and then it was a chore to get it running so it would look good. But it was always great, and probably one of the first game's to actually wow me with it's graphics.

And that game had the alternate-angle jump over "bridges" and what-not slow-mo as well...

No it didn't!! Porsche Unleashed had alternate routes, but no jumping over bridges or slow-mo crap. Maybe you're thinking of NFS: HP2

Geez i hate these controls, ea ruined this game and hp2 with terrbie controls/physics.
A little movement on my rumblepad and the car swirves, and you cant even adjust the sensitivity. And these "ice skating" physics are back.
I think ill re-install nfspu, it was the last good nfs game out there.

I've always thought Viper Racing (published by Sierra, developed by MGI [Nascar Heat devs]) was a pretty damn good racing sim. You couldn't just mash the pedals to the floor because you will lose control. There's also a damage model--you can reset the car to get a "clean" one but you start from a standstill. They also had a really cool view from the inside of the front end of the car so you can see your front shocks and tires. I don't think this has ever been duplicated in any other game.

Unfortunately, it was never quite popular when it came out and it's even harder to find now. It's worth the $5-10 if you can find it though.

Edited to add linky.

Hmm... I played HP2 too so I can't say for absolute sure... I just remember the airborne cutscenes... (alternate angle scenes for a few secs) and it was with fainted/old yellow-colored cars... which were common in Porsche Unleashed...

Can't say for sure unless I re-install it...
