Thanks to this and a few other threads im not building PCs others except for family now.

I got this friend who wants me to build 3 PCs for people and i can make like 200ea but im not sure if its worth it.
i buld one system for him and i get call like every week for example how do i burn a Cd in nero. WTF :|

Im not even kidding, IT IS NOT WORTH IT. I've even decided not to build computers for relatives, i just cant deal with tech support with my buzy life. And believe me, when they want it, they will come to you.

Yep, I'm thinking about doing a little tech support/new builds in college, but I am going to have a waiver just like compusa, that absolves me from any responsibility even if I am grossly negligent while working on their computer. And a clear written warranty.

don't forget one thing u can and will be sued for grossly negligent and no contract will safe you

Unless your invoice specifically states a one-year or greater warranty, I think you're safe. Tell the A$$hat to fvck off, he doesn't have a legal leg to stand on.

Of course, if you COULD get a copy of the invoice beforehand, you could make sure you didn't write down anything that might be construed as a warranty or tech support.

Put the updates in the main post so I don't have to scroll through the whole darn thread to find them and read them.

Good luck though, it sounds like you'll need it.

ah read the last part more clearly. I take it you are no longer friends with this person/couple? Screw it, they couldn't touch you in small claims court.

Tell him you would have helped but since he threatened you, you stand by your invoice language and you'll see him in court.

He'll never bring the case, it's an idle threat.

Hope finals went well! Congrats on graduation :D

I think a lot of us learn this lesson the hard way. I don't even tell people what I do for a living any more. As soon as I mention computers, they start asking questions.

Everyone wants advice and service for nothing! I would not build another computer for anyone again outside of people that I would get paid time off for their funeral. Those are the only people left in the world that I trust.

Right there, you are off the hook. You cannot be responsible if someone is changing parts on your computer. You built it and it worked fine, they changed some stuff and you cannot control what they did, so even if you did offere a warranty saying you would fix next day (which you did not and rightfully so) they voided the warranty by screwing around with the PC. Don't sweat it man.

what kind of friend is this. I would just say, go ahead and take me to court.

It's been a year and there is a solution to the problem. You are willing to help and they won't hear it.

WHat do they want u to do? show up with a soldering gun and trouble shoot a mobo?

They are jackasses. Maybe you can counter sue for harassment!

Love the USA

My main problem is, my laptop (which had my copy of the invoice) was sent to dell when i had a problem and the hard drive came back clean (i.e. i dont seem to have a copy of the invoice)...

Now i am POSITIVE that i stated that all parts come with the manufacturers warranty (i think i even went as far as to list each part specifically and how long the warranty was, i.e. 1yr/3yr) No where on the invoice did i say an amount of time acceptable for me to fix the computer, nor did i say i would even be responsible for fixing the computer. Only that each part carried its own warranty.

When i mentioned this to him, he said that his wife was not informed of this at the time of purchase and that he assumed Manufacturer meant me. I am positive i explained this to her before i delivered the computer. Im just worried that since i dont have the invoice handy (believe me, im looking), i wont have any room to fight...

What should i do?

get them to fax you the invoice... if they dont have it they are screwed

Why would you have to replace the board any faster than the manufacturer? If they had bought it from compaq, they'd have to send it in and wait for the replacement to come. Why should you have to buy a new board now? How are you *more* responsible than the manufacturer, who *acutally* gave them a warranty (while you specifically did not)?

1) they completely and totally have no case. period. so dont worry about it. the judge will toss it right out. if they don't have a warranty in writing from you, they're screwed.

2) dont just not call them back, that's low. dont sink to their level. call them back and tell them the facts: you will try to help, if they want, but you can't do it until next week (assuming you still want to, but you might not since they're threatening you). If that's not soon enough for them, they should take it to compusa and get it serviced. And if i were you i wouldn't fix it for free.

Also: it may very well be the powersupply. I had one do that, after the breaker blew in my house. swapped it with another and everything cleaned up. but its more likely software. yay windows.
