Nope full version of XP Home....

2 other things that might be of interest....

1) I am fairly sure that he is NOT married to her currently and i know for a fact they werent married when when i built the computer. I should not have to be dealing with him at all, only with her. He is the one threatening to sue, not her. I built the computer for HER.

2) The computer was built for AND installed into their home. He is complaining that he needs it to work by tommorow for his business, meanwhile the system was not DESIGNED to be used in a business environment, nor was it ever conveyed to me that it would be.

Even if the asshat wants to sue you, he would get the depreciated cost of the mobo, not replacement cost. Thats IF he even won, which I have serious doubts about.

Good luck, sounds like you tried your best to help them out.

Some people are just asshats. A guy (he has a nice job in the university and I am just a student) bought a brand new computer case, a manufacturer sealed one, from me for $43. He emailed me one month later saying that the power supply is faulty. He connected the case to the wall (without installing the mobo,hd, etc.,) and the powersupply went bad. I was about to give back his money to him, when he started threatening me. He said that the matter is going to get worse, blah, blah, blah. I asked him to go fvck himself. I have not heard from him since then. :D

Another incident: I sold a brand new compaq desktop to a woman(She has some high level job in the school) in April. Last week, She sent me an email saying that the floppy drive is not working. I asked her to bring the desktop to school or I can comeby her house to check it out. I have not heard from her since then. :D
My advice: Sell your stuff on Ebay/forums. Never build a computer for someone you know.

right. just screw it. If they really take you to the court, tell the judge that you offered to send the mobo back to the manufacturer but these asshats wouldnot agree.

Don't you basically just hafta stall their antics for 4 days after which you'll move and they won't be able to contact you (by phone at least)?

I have a suggestion.
You never said you'll do onsite support.
They'll either need to ship it to your or drive their ass 300 miles and bring you the PC.

If they can't do that. Tell them to fvck themselves and go to hell.

You ain't their lap dog. You made $20 bucks. Tell them you'll sue em for harrassment.
If they take you to court, sue em for traveling fees time off work etc..

Think of whatever you can. Judge Judy might be the way to go.

In that case, follow the advice of those on this forum. Call them back, asking for a copy of the invoice as you need to verify some specifics about what was agreed to. If they can provide it, and it contains what you expect, tell them exactly where it's cited that you're not responsible for it. If they give you any flack (invoice provided or no) and still threaten to take you to court, tell them to suck it. Any good relationship you had with these people is dead.

How do i know this device didnt cause the problem? Im starting to agree, they have no case.

You are in the clear since you made the smart move and said you do not warrenty the computer and its parts.

When I build computers I only cover the hardware that is under warrenty from the vender or manufacturer. If they happen to screw up their computer I tell them to find someone else to help them since "I don't have time".

didnt you used to have a website for building/selling comps? Did you do the same sort of service with other people? Im sure if you could provide 2-3 other invoices (if possible) that are a standard for you, showing that the only warrenty you provide is from that of the manufacturer, you's be pretty safe. Also, if she cant prove that you said you'd provide support, ie via a written statement, then your pretty well safe I'd say.

One word of advice, if you end up on Judge Joe Brown, dont yell or talk back to him. Some stupid bitch learned that it can be a little costly.. to the tune of $2000 to be more presice :D

Considering i have 3 final exams tommorow, graduation on saturday, and im moving sunday & monday.... I really dont have the time to deal with this right now...

I've decided not to call, not to email, just to cut off complete contact with them from here on out.

Threatening to sue because i cant fix his computer TOMMOROW, considering he knows my situation is just showing how much of a COMPLETE A-HOLE he is.... I've had enough....

Thanks for all the help guys, hopefully i wont hear from them again (although i doubt it)

Way to go.

I'm no lawyer, but I took a business law course once. If I remember right, it basically comes down to a contract. You promised to give her a built pc with manufacturers warranty and help when you had time (although I'm not sure how you phrased it) and in consideration of that, she paid you.

The point that you only made 20 bucks will not take into play, because you quoted the price and she met it (gave consideration).

If the husband calls, agree to fix it only cuz his wife was a good lay.
That'll stop the calls and divert the anger elsewhere.

I used to, all the computers i sold were to friends (never anyone i didnt know)

I always made sure to cover my ass, here is an old invoice i found (granted, i made a different one for this computer since i didnt have this handy) But it shows what i typically wrote on invoices...

"Please Note: Technical Support will only be provided for 90 days after the purchase of the computer. Any
additional hardware or software added to the computer after the system has been shipped
is not covered. All components come with their manufacturer warranties. Thank you."

Do not, I repeat do not hide from them! Make sure they can reach you and here's why - if they do take you to court and you're not there, the judge will rule against you by default! Not knowing about a court date does not relieve you of obligations to answer the charges., If they can prove that they tried to contact you but were unable to serve you with court papers because you're hiding from them, you will loose, guaranteed. An appeal process will be more costly then paying the judgement.

Next time they call you, tell them that all options have been exhausted and you will not succumb to their unreasonable demands. Unless they wish to sue you, all communications must seize. Note the date and time of the conversation and write down a brief summary.

Hey, I just added some stuff, you may want to read.

In short, no you're not obligated to call and provide your new address/phone number. Just make sure if they contact you parents/friends they have the info. This may turn into a legal matter and you want to make sure noone leaves you in the dark.

If you're going to do that, state specific dates and times you're available to do that, otherwise they can call upon you at anytime between 12:01 Sunday morning and 11:50 Saturday night. Email is a legal document that can be used against you. Be specific and cover your ass.
