Need a new city building game

I awhile back I asked for suggestions on city building games and I found The Settlers: Rise of an Empire and I loved the game.

I've since finished that and it's expansion and even played a ton of custom maps but its now getting boring.

I need something new now. It needs to be in real time, no turned base crap. I like the medieval time period type stuff the most but it isn't required. I'd also like a little bit of combat involved if possible, but not required either.

I could try the previous Settlers games but not sure how I'd like going backwards in gameplay and graphics.

I've tried 1701 AD, Children of the Nile, City Life (couldn't even get it to install), Sim City Societies, Civ IV, one set during the Roman empire, and a few others but none were what i wanted or just plain sucked.

I have always found the free demo of Capitalism 2 to be amusing. It is a business building game, but has a city building game feel to it. No need to buy the full version, as the demo does not expire and you can play the one scenario (all one really needs) even after you win it.

There's a link if you can ignore the lameass Halo ads.

By the way, Halo Wars scored a 6.5 on gamespot, making it the worst scoring game from Ensemble Studios. Serves them right, I hope Microsoft loses money from this venture.

if i didn't like 1701, will i like 1404?

1404 is being entirely revamped. I didn't care much for 1404, but the time period and the new gameplay mode sounds intriguing.

I loved the Settlers 3 (4 was good too).

I would think it's worth trying for you if you can find them.

Get 3 over 4 if you have the choice.

Pharaoh and Tropico are still a lot of fun.
Stronghold 2 has a military and a economic campaign

I wish firefly studios would release that Dungeon hero game and make Stronghold 3 already.

I hated Stronghold II, especially after how much I loved the original, even after it's faults. The game was buggy, slow and just seemed sloppy.

Tropico 3 coming out later this year, I hope that rocks, since I loved the first one.

Yup, Pharaoh was great, one of best games I've played. I would recommend it very much.

i just tried a demo of Imperium Romanum and Hinterland.

IR might have worked if the combat wasn't so absolutely shitty.

Hinterland falls short because it doesn't have enough of the features that make a hack-n-slash game good nor does it have the features that make a city building game good.
also, they made it so you have to pretty much be at the city to do anything in the city, which defeats the purpose of going out and playing the hack-n-slash portion, but you can't work on your city without doing the hack-n-slash portion of the game. they should have called it Hinderland, because it hinders your from doing either part of the game.

How about, Stronghold 3: Crusader?

ugh...i bought Settlers: Heritage of Kings for $10 off D2d and it seems to be mostly focusing on combat, at least in the beginning campaign missions. It kind of sucks because you have so few types of units and you can't even recruit very many. definitely not as good as Rise of an Empire. That had even fewer units but it was more focused on the city building, imo.

Black & White II

Real time, I'd guess around roman times, you build a city, watch the population grow in great detail (you can't just slap a few houses up and expect everyone to be happy) and you can zoom in. It's a simple matter to defend, put up some walls at a choke point and place archers on said walls. You also get a "pet" (a monster from legends basically) that you can either turn into a care taker of your people or a terrifying weapon of destruction.

-edit- Oh and a "spell pool" or whatever it's called, set people to worship it (this is where population comes in handy) and you can grab and throw explosive fireballs down upon your enemies if they dare approach your walls. If a rival beast attacks have yours go out and meet it supported by your spells and some infantry/archers. There is also a really, Really, REALLY cheap way to disable a enemy base if you chose to do so.

Other then that I have no idea.

I wish Peter Molyneux would make a Black and White -esque game, minus the stupid monster gimmick shit.

Have you tried any of the decent sim city games and not the spin off versions like you said?

Try something entirely unique and you might never go back to normal city building games again. Try Dwarf Fortress 2, I can guarantee you that it blows your other city builders out of the water. BE WARNED, it is not only one of the most complex games ever, you might become addicted to it and rogue-likes in general...

Is that seriously a link to a rogue-like + city-builder? God, that sounds awesome and terribly addicting. (I have ascended 12/13 classes in Nethack.) I will check it out when I get home from work.
