where did you read that? In disbelief I re-read whole review and can't find this. - If black is not deep here I don't know where it is? It's blacker than my 1905FP which is S-PVA, blacker than all the TN's I've tried, blacker than high-end CRT (nec 2070) blacker than anything I've seen before.

he did complain about being too bright ("Too bright standard adjustment") maybe he forgot to trun brightness down affecting his review.

look at first review, with real photos - high levels of blackness there.

It's on the first page of that review:

NEC wanted to make an effect on the market. IPS panels were said to be slow and their contrast ratio insufficient, but here is a new one at 6ms and 700:1. To reach such a contrast ratio, however, NEC hasn´t improved its black and it?s still not as deep as other PVA monitors, barely going below 0.4cd/m². It is better than previous IPS and they have mainly increased brightness to 470 cd/m².

That seems to indicate that the big contrast ratio comes from a high brightness rather than a low black level. Although if the black level looks better than a 2070 to you, I must check out this display. :D

I still say BS/user error. No way this is'nt blacker than S-PVA. (can't comment on MVA)

I  Opticlear though.

I know Sony was actually the first company to release the X-Brite screens (it was on laptops first IIRC), but Sony = overpriced, & AG Neovo i've never seen in Canada.

When NEC released the 1770GX/1970GX Opticlear displays, i was hoping they'd come out with a 20" + later, & while they did, it was a bit too late, as i already have my 16x12 Samsung, & now that i'm used to 16x12, there's no way i'd go to the odd WS 16x10 resolution...i dislike having to screw around to get games to work at proper resolutions, etc.

I've went from a 17" CRT @ 1152x864 to a 17" LCD @ 1280x1024 to a 20" LCD @ 1600x1200...so for an LCD, the next natural progression would be a WS 23/24" @ 1920x1200...bring it on NEC :D

i also cant tell the difference between 6 and 8 bit. hell im partially colorblind and i cant see ghosting even at 25ms (lucky my i guess).

but i'd have to say i'm really really sensitive to contrast and black levels becuase of the partial colorblindness (its not huge but colorblind people tend to see grays better). and well , i have an nec lcd1770gx and the black levels are amazing. black has never ever been blacker. my last 2 lcds were 2 pretty good planar units , but its no comparison. just make sure you dont use it in sunlight (i dont ) as any sort of gloss coating sucks in the sun (my projection tv has the same problem..)

Yes very lucky. Much cheaper that way.. like drinking Bud instead of Newcastle.. I spend thousands of dollars to find the "right" display and my mom thinks this "old" 930B diamondtron I gave her was the best thing she ever saw.. When I went to visit she had it at 10x7 and 60hz.

I could have strangled her but I've learned to control myself and accept people as they are. :D

Really considering buying this!! I'm getting tired of my crappy Samsung SyncMaster 730B (yup that's right, the one with the horrible overdrive effects).

refresh rates bother me like crazy though on crts. 60hz is just painful. but yeah... i dont notice the ghosting in games.. then again im not much of a gamer. a friend of mine used to play CS:source on my old planar 20" which was 25ms, and he said it was so bad he would aim incorrectly because of the ghosting.

W00T!!!! I ordered one last night :D! Sold my old computer for $350, agreed to give my 730B to my sister for $250 (she wants an LCD so bad, she still has a CRT), and I'm using a gateway rebate that's coming in the mail for $100, and I'm going to use the $50 rebate on the monitor that I got from NEC's website. That comes to $750, and I found the monitor for $772 on the internet (Buy.com is sold out), so I only have to pay $22. WooHoo!!! I hope this monitor rocks as much as I've heard :D

EDIT: It better rock too because I could have gotten myself a nice 24" 1920x1200 dell for this price. :p

As someone who didn't think they'd ever "like" an LCD.. I have to admit I'm extremely happy with the NEC. The colors are awesome, and I don't see any of the ghosting I was afraid of (playing mostly World of Warcraft). I still haven't gotten the text clarity where I want it in WoW - it's great everywhere else. I think it's the font they use, because switching to a custom font made a big improvement.

I see a lot of people mention the shiny surface - It really does depend on your room setup and personal preference. My laptop has a similar coating, and it was just awful in an office with bright overhead lighting. Now I work from home and it's fine. I was able to setup the NEC with no window or light source behind it and it's fine. I game mostly at night in a dimly lit room with a desk lamp adjusted so there is no glare on the monitor (I did this even with my CRT).

The built in TV tuner and PiP is great - very cool to be able to watch TV while gaming or surfing. Can't say I do it all the time, but it's nice to catch the evening news or watch a little TV while waiting for a WoW raid to start. The menu system is very easy to use, as is moving the PiP around on the screen.

I find the black to be quite black, and no bleeding or dead pixels so far. I wouldn't have spent this much $$ on a monitor ordinarily (it cost more than my TV!) but I'm glad I took the plunge!

Zebo, I dropped you a PM regarding this. Have you had a chance to compare it to the new Gateway 2185? I have this one now and it's much better then the Dell unit but it has some banding issues.

My brother has the 2185 but honestly I did'nt get to check it out much when i was at his house.. He lives in lake havasu which is hundreds of miles away so not seeing him much we did much more drinking and jet skiing than tech compros:p But I will say I did'nt like it at all. Pixel pitch was big.. colors and blacks weak and motion blur.

If you think that of the Gateway, I'm really curious about the NEC now as I think the Gateway blows the dress up on the Dell 2005, and sitting next to an Apple Cinema they look very simular. I'm going to pick up the Apple tonight and test drive it for awhile as I can't find anyone with the NEC in stock.

As a side note, is the screen as "glossy" or "wet" looking as the new Sony's?

The dell and apple are same display so I'm snot sure where you are going with that?

I have Dell too sitting right here - can't compare to NEC. NEC is brighter, better view angle, crisper, passes those grey tests you PM me and faster.

Yes opticlear is glossy like sonys.

That explains why the text has issues...gaming is great as I played some HL2 and FarCry last night...and it played very nicely...other then it was letterbox style and I miss my widescreen. Regardless, I think I'm going to have to go back to the Gateway as this seems to be the best of the bunch that I've had...the glossy screen reflects everything in my room...I can actually see my own reflection in the screen when I'm working on dark objects.

And I thought I had it all when I purchased my first Hitachi UltraScan 19"...sheesh

Should have text issues, no black issues, no good color issues, no good viewing angle issues and $400 for a 17" issue.:D

Glossy screen means you must not have light or window behind you period... then it looks great.

This monitor rocks. I just bought one to replace my NEC FP2141SB (eye strain problems), and I have to say I'm shocked at how good this monitor is, overall I'd say it's better than the CRT it's replacing.
