looooooooooooooooooooooooool, I can see the sky here in The Bronx.
Can't be mad though, at least I got the day off tomorrow.

lol, I guess The Bronx is lucky so far, the news says 4" dumped in Central Park already, but there isn't a single flake in sight here. :'(
Anyone in Manhattan can confirm the news isn't full of shit?

If I were a meteorologist I would bury my head in the sand. Can't say snow cause there is none.

I am kind of pissed. They hype and scare the shit out of everyone, and a flake drops. 8pm passes, and now almost 10pm and they still don't know shit. Then they claim mother nature is completely unpredictable....Ok great... but what if I am surgeon and say my hands are completely unpredictable? Even so, I think 2-4 hours before a storm "hits" should be reasonable enough time to use millions of dollars worth of equipment and figure something out.

Bah. I really don't know why I am upset. I get a paid day off from work and night school is cancelled. Though for many others, like the temps and contractors who I work for, are not getting paid. It just seems like my emotions are being played with and I am a sensitive guy...lol.

They tell us to stay home and be safe. Yet many workers end up being fired for doing just that and I would take the risk more now after seeing what bull shit come out of these guys mouths on tv. They were selling us a storm like a late night sports memorabilia QVC salesmen.

They get paid for ratings. I have to admit, I watched the news more today than any other day in the past year or so.

They've been showing this on the news today, we were laughing. Shut down the whole city, really? Here it would be considered an inconvinience because you'd have to get up extra early to try to make it to work on time through this, but not more than that. 1 metre of snow, you can't drive through that if the plow did not pass, so you'd have to walk to work or call in sick, but, they would not shut down the whole city.

They were showing people panic buying shovels, salt (what the hell is salt going to do when you have a metre of snow? lol) and water. WATER! Just because it snows does not mean the water faucets stop working! The water filtration plants will continue to operate as normal. And even if they did go down and city water stopped... SNOW *IS* WATER! :awe: It's so hilarious watching the panic that goes on in the states over snow.

1) Workers need to be able to get to work in the first place. Outer areas, where these workers live, might be hit harder, making it hard to staff mass-transit systems. Also, mass-transit systems are storing equipment to prevent damage due to the storm. It takes time to redeploy equipment.

2) Salt can be useful after you shovel. Clear off that bottom layer of ice or keep ice from forming after you cleared that top layer that then melts in the sun (and would refreeze into some nice ice at night).

3) You would eat city snow? D: Eww. If power goes out and heat drops, pipes could freeze, preventing you from getting water.

But you're apparently a big burly Canadian. 🙄 Somehow you keep going back and forth between this is nothing and it's a big deal. 1 meter is ~38 inches. Some areas of the northeast are predicted to get 24+ inches, which is pretty appreciable. According to the forcast I just watch, NYC (and much of the area that is in commuting distance to NYC) is still looking at 20-30 inches.

/facepalm

Looking at Hartford CT radar from 10:20 pm it looks like the heavy stuff is just starting to hit now but to get the totals the weather-guessers have been predicting all day it'll have to be pretty serious. If it craps out that's good news as far as I'm concerned.

I have to say the hype surrounding this storm has been downright silly.

Don't eat snow no. Boil it first. If you eat snow without melting it you get hypothermia. And you need a lot of snow to make up for the difference in volume.

we'll see how it looks in the morning, my understanding was that the predictions were always for light flurries on Monday afternoon, followed by blizzard conditions in the overnight hours into Tuesday morning.

What I recall hearing was 1-3 in during the day then heavy starting around 9-10pm. It's still possible they got it right.

WEATHER BANDS!!! WATCH OUT. Weather bands have the potential to drop UP to 3 inches per hour! And then taper off AND COME BACK AT A LATER HOUR!

OMG!!!

Yeah you'd want to bring it in, put it in a container and just put that over the heat register or something to let it melt. Or boil it works too. Also don't eat yellow snow. :awe: I can't say water or food has ever been an issue here no matter what kind of storm we have though, there's not really any reason for it to be. Worse case the power goes out, your water still works. Gravity does not stop working if there's no electricity. The water tower is a tower for a reason. It might be inconvenient to drive around for a while and ideally you want to try to just stay in but if you have to work you have to get there and are expected to.

When they announce say, 60cm of snow, it's maybe more like 30cm actual. The wind and other factors causes it to be less. I find with just the basic traffic of cops, taxis, the oddball person that's still up late, it keeps the roads in half decent drivable condition as snow gets packed or pushed along the sides and you get ruts to drive in. I've had times where my front bumper was like a train plow though. Cars arn't really designed for that and don't like it very much, but you do what you got to do to get to work. 😛 Sucks driving in that with summer tires though (I finally got winter tires a year ago, helps a lot). People DO get stuck, there are accidents, but it's really not a huge panic here like it is in the states. To me the biggest danger is trying to see if there's cars coming when you're at a stop sign because the snow banks are taller than cars by this time of year. The city has been bad this year for taking them out. Lot of streets badly need to be done and only got done once this year, some did not even get done at all.

But what can you do. Winter happens every year. It seems to catch the US by surprise every time though. :awe:

I don't really see the harm in buying bottled water at the end of the day regardless.

it's not like stocking up on bread/milk (why???) where it's going to spoil in a couple days/weeks... if I felt compelled to buy a case of bottled water today before the storm and didn't need it, it'd still get used up eventually.

when I prep for something like a blizzard, I usually think about 1 big protein-rich meal that will last 2-3 days and can be reheated over the stove top (gas stove burner will still work in a power outage) and anything else I buy is canned/dry goods that I'll use eventually anyways.

Damn y'all sound so bitter. lmao

Want them to stop predicting? You'll be pissed off and moaning and whining like spoiled children that they should have warned you, even if the warning was inaccurate.

Yeesh, no pleasing some people.

Just watch the radar for this storm and how the models are predicting the storm. Watch how the storm evolves and where models thought it would go, how big it would be or where it would evolve at what point in time. The computer models are always updating based on what information they have at that time.

Looks like all the models STILL agree for the totals in Boston and the surrounding region.

If you could judge and guess based on the original models, and tried to keep up with the storm track and where the gradients were, you'd see places like NYC were always on the edge. Places on the edge of large-track storms may have received a prediction they would be hit, they might not.

It really is no different from hurricane forecasting. Are y'all likely to get your panties in a bunch when forecast models don't predict hurricane tracks correctly? OMG look how much they suck! HAHA it didn't even hit the east coast like they said, it went to the gulf coast! HAHHA THEY IS STUPID.
🙄

They updated to 6-12 now for jersey. They say the storm isn't a "bust"...ok...maybe just for Long Island? NJ ain't getting shit. You can see the snowbands just drying up as soon as they make it 5 miles inland.

It's a bust for us that for sure.
