The article just seems like conventional feminism to me. Making a connection between heterosexuality and patriarchy is hardly new or contraversial. It's been commonplace at least since the late 1970s.. A perfectly defenisble argument. But I dislike the excessive veneration among some middle-class American identity-politics types for rich celebs who make some very mild political comment that won't harm their career. And the overexcited claim that a few celeb stories constitute some radical social change is a bit silly.

As far as I'm concerned, the fact that she mocked Sinead O'Connor's mental health struggles means Ms Cyrus needs to be forever cast into outer darkness, no matter what fashionable-but-career-friendly politics she now parrots (now she's gotten rich - just like Taylor Swift suddenly discovered she had some very mild political views once she was firmly ensconced in the overclass).

If it were Turmp spouting the same type of stuff about her that Sinead did, would you be defending him or would you be saying "yeah he's mentally ill"? Its not like Cyrus said that about her out of nowhere (Sinead literally called her a prostitute and rambled on about her in an open letter). Also, weird that you're trying to condemn people for outrage when Sinead ripped the picture, but want to cast Cyrus "forever into outer darkness" after Sinead is the one that instigated the whole thing.

You do realize both of them were actually darlings of typical conservatives early in their careers, right? That was what built their fame in the first place, so taking very open and vociferous stances opposite of that actually potentially could harm their careers. Plus what galvanized Taylor Swift was that her not saying anything while other people took shots at her (politically speaking, she took barbs from both sides too, as I recall quite a few female musicians criticizing her for not joining them on speaking out about certain issues) enabled white supremacists to claim that she was one of them and was seeding their ideology in mainstream culture (I'll have to wait for someonesmind to inform me if that was all just a 4Chan hoax or not though).

I don't think most people think about Sinead much at all. Hell her ripping the picture overshadowed her entire music career, which is a shame. As is her struggles with mental health. That doesn't give her a free pass to say things about other people without repercussion. None of that justifies rich-kid Cyrus sneers about mental health. Given her hugely privileged status (clearly from a much more upper-class background than O'Connor) that was particularly disgusting. I am vaguely aware that Swift was a conservative fave early on - that's partly my point, they all put money and career ahead of any political principles and then get overpraised for making the mildest of comments. Which is not something one could say about O'Connor (what with making pro-IRA statements and the like). Granted one could put that down to her having some mental health issues from the start, but I just find that preferable to the utterly cynical careerism of a Cyrus or a Madonna. Both of whom tend to get hagiographic treatment from too many liberal leftists (as in the article linked to or from the likes of Naomi Wolfe). That tendency to hero-worship rich people for modest liberalism is an unattractive trait among liberals.

As I recall, I winced at O'Connor's letter at the time, because it seemed obviously naive and confused, seeing Cyrus as a victim rather than the show biz careerist that she is, and probably unconsciously channeling some of the social conservatism of O'Connor's background. Didn't surprise me it didn't get a good response. But responding with sneers about mental health is hardly any better than responding to criticism from a black person with racist remarks.
