I was under the impression salt is mostly bad for you if you're one of those unfortunates whom it's bad for (which isn't everyone)

Table salt as commonly used in the US IS bad for you in the sense that it will raise your resting blood pressure significantly.

That's never a good thing but how bad it is depends on your age and more importantly where your BP starts!

You should try a Kayem or Hebrew National hot dog. Upgrade from Nathan's to something higher quality!

I've had both many times lol ... and no doubt BOTH are a bit higher quality meat then Nathans but also they are more mildly spiced. Boars Head dogs are better quality meat then any of them but I find them too salty unless boiled/steamed.

I like the jumbo beef Hebrew Nationals on the grill (or broiler) since its easy to make the outside crispy without drying them out but overall I prefer Nathans.

So what the OP is saying is that Nathan's wiener tastes bad in his mouth. Not a surprise....

FWIW posting in a Saltynuts thread!

You can't have a dogfight without a dog house.

I'm not a fan of Nathan's either, their spice blend is not to my tastes. Ballpark all-beef (the regular ones, not the Angus) are my go-to for cheap, mass produced wieners. They're much better than any of the pork/beef/chicken blends from other major brands.

I used to tolerate Costco beef dogs though I wasn't a big fan. Their spice blend, like Nathan's, is off. But ever since I got covid I can't stomach them at all. Not sure if it's related to my temporary loss of taste but they taste different now and they're horrible. I doubt it's virus related as no other food I've consumed since recovering still tastes off like those wieners do.

Worst wiener I've ever gobbled was a brisket dog. I think it was made by a local company (Flocchini) though I may be misremembering. Whoever made it should be ashamed of themselves and have their meat tube production privileges revoked. The taste and spices were just foul and it had several big chunks of gristle in it. I took just 2 or 3 bites and threw them all away. A shame, too, cuz they were the big "dinner-style" or whatever dogs (like, 1/4# each) and fairly expensive ($8 for 4).

Wholly crap sactoking, you just might be a genious. I was going to put this little story in my original post, but I figured it would make it too long - most people on this forum have like a 17 second attention span lol. But what I was going to say is that the only APPARENTLY all beef hot dog I ever liked was possibly a ball park beef. So I used to stop at a gas station on the way to work and get one hot dog and one tornado. I LOVED those hot dogs. For years I did that. One time I went in there and the clerk said he is not a hot dog guy, but after seeing me eat them pretty much every week day for years, he tried one, and it was really good. I laughed, and asked him what kind they were by the way. He said ballpark beef dogs.

So, the first thing I did was go to the store and get some ballpark beef dogs, and tried them. NO. Not good. And they tasted nothing like the ones from the convenience store I liked. HOWEVER, now that you posted that, I BET I got the ANGUS beef hotdogs, not the regular ones that you mentioned are good. My next stop? Wal-Mart for some non-angus ballpark beef dogs!!! Thanks sactoking!!!

Yeah, that's what I'm referring to, my understanding is that it doesn't have that effect on everyone.

Is there a distinction from table salt vs Kosher/pink/sea?

Not really in terms of effect on BP per the science. (although of course some folks will tell you different) Usually sea-salt/kosher salt has a bit less sodium so it might be a smidge less unhealthy for that reason but nothing else.

The only type of salt I've read can actually be somewhat healthier is the "lite" variety which contains significantly less sodium and more potassium.

I find that while the initial flavor of the "lite" stuff is okay it has an unpleasant after-taste I don't enjoy. I prefer to just use less "real" table-salt myself.
