Boring?? You think going 190 MPH inches away from another cars bumper or side panel is boring. NASCAR is insane, Bump Drafting and spinning out other drivers at 180+mph to get ahead of them ala Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart in 3500 LBS 700 HP Machines? (BTW Stewart was an IRL Champ before he switched over too NASCAR) Hell even the Pit Stops can be exciting with cars falling off jacks and race officials getting clipped by cars trying to get back out on the track before the officials can get out of the way. And the race strategy can be finger nail biting trying to calculate if they can finish on the amount of fuel they have left in the tank or whether to pit and change tires and hope the tires will last and not blow sending the car into the wall or another car at 190 MPH.

I'm always amazed at the skill of NASCAR drivers, especially when they avoid other cars right in front of them spinning out. It's almost unbelievable how so many of them avoid plowing into another car which has wrecked right in front of them.

In addition NASCAR on HD with Dolby is the best TV has to offer when it comes to that technology, it really shows what your Home Theater setup can offer.

I think it's boring as hell. I've watched some of the racing but the thing about it is, you tune in at lap 10 and then again at lap 110 and then again at lap 180 and you see the same damned thing...cars going around in a big circle at high speeds. I can't stand oval racing. Oh, and I've been to an oval track race too!!!

I'll admit that there are a few tracks on the F1 calendar that produce some pretty boring races but there are others that simply shine. Tracks like Spa and Imola even Canada, Japan and Brazil. I even love Monte Carlo even though there is no very little chance to pass there. To me there is nothing as exciting as the start of a Formula One race either.

I'm sure Schumacher's comments will draw the ire of rednecks everywhere though. It will be entertaining to watch the response from idiot rednecks to his opinion...which I happen to agree with. :p
Jules I'm trying to be nice to you but if you insist on calling NASCAR fans like myself Red Neck Idiots like you are somehow more intellectual or sophisticated then I think you are being delusional about yourself. I don't have a problem with you not liking it or finding it boring but I do have a problem with you insulting those of us who do like it because of all the nuances and intricacies along with the thrills that you don't seem to get.

Alright, sorry about the idiot redneck comment, I'll edit my post. I just think it's funny that a bunch of nascar fans are getting all riled up about what he said...or what was quoted in the press anyway. It could be that this was taken out of context but you'll never hear anyone say that in the media.

I am not even a Schumacher fan. I hope he loses this year, just like last year. In fact, I'd like to see Kimi Raikkonen go to Ferrari and beat Schumacher next year in the same car. That would be awesome! ;)
Funny, I don't see many people riled up over it. For the most part they are explaining what they like about NASCAR.

BTW you have to admit that F1 drivers are a bunch of Prima Donna's. I know this so that's why their comments rarely strike home with me.

Hmm, maybe I'll stroll on over to a nascar message board and see if that's true or not.
LOL, I was talking about here. Those people are fanatics, much like the Vidiots and the CPU turds here at Anandtech.

 I didn't mean to single out just the nascar fans here. I was referring more to nascar fans in general. This thread has remained fairly civil actually.

so what you're saying is that racing in nascar would be more challenging than racing in F1?

and no ferrari is not #1

NASCAR is definately more challenging just because the number of competitive teams and drivers is much greater.

And oval racing is equally challenging if you have a lot of competition. The challenge comes from the other competitors, and when there are fewer corners, getting those corners right is much more critical.

Most road course only have a few places where getting the corner exactly right is important, other than qualifying, because there's no opportunity to pass a slower car anyway. A slower driver can't get away with that in oval racing.

Open-wheel might be more challenging, or more interesting for a driver, or more competitive, or more advanced, or more better gooder, but NASCAR's financial success and TV ratings in the US make this discussion moot.

So there! :p

oh yea, one other thing, I wonder if Schumy could drive a stick, or just F1 slush box ?

Without traction control and anti-lock brakes ?

ESPN/ABC managed to get a piece of the NASCAR contract, they start in 2007.

Those guys aren't afraid to bad mouth/make fun of drivers, teams, the track, or the sanctioning body. I hate the Fox and NBC Nascar announcers.
I think the Speed announce team is about the only reason I continue to watch F1, they're funny, don't try to overshadow the race, and Steve Matchett's technical analysis is better and more informative than any racing commentator I've ever heard.

I don't watch a lot of NASCAR, partly because Fox and NBC's coverage is so cringe-worthy. The old ESPN crew of Bob, Benny and Ned was a lot better.
