Enterprise still exists even though it is not active.

Constitution still is an active commissioned USN ship. - Stationed in Boston.

Freedom would not be used due to the historical significance.

Victory conotates aggression; we have always postured that space should be free of this.

Stargazer is feasible

America name becomes a political problem if we want other countries to work within the space program

Voyager is feasible

My two cents worth of observations

EDIT: But they really shouldn't build any new space shuttles. Let's move on.

For a shuttle replacement, "Porkus Barrelus" or "Egois Boostis"

I hope they do not develop a shuttle replacement, because the emphasis wont be on the science or whatever reason you want a manned space program. It will be just to make something incredibly more expensive than it has to be.

I think the next named vessel should be a reusable ship parked in orbit intended to go beyond earth to the moon or beyond. That I would name the JFK. That time will probably come after I am gone, but that does not bother me.
 
Stargazer is a retarded name. We don't name ships after gay sounding Star Trek names. Naming it the JFK isn't a bad idea.....not a big fan of the man or his family but he was a pivotal figure in our space program. Of course if you really want to name it after someone who contributed the most to our space program you need to name it the Von Braun or the Goddard. That being said, I think we need to stay away from naming our spacecraft after people.
 
I don't know why, but I always envisioned our next space vehicle would be named Endurance. Don't exactly know where I got it from. Now I think that is even more likely after this tragedy. They will want a name that conotates exactly that, endurance and perserverence.

Not really much better than the stupid Star Trek names.


 
I hope they design a new one.

I like "Freedom." It represents one of America's ideals for everyman, and also applies to the "freedom of space travel."

"Enterprise" is overused. Maybe in another generation or so, let the name be used again for the first production model of a new class of ship. Just like the last Enterprise was (Argue all you want, most people would say that Enterprise was the first Space Shuttle).

I disagree with "JFK." He may have done great things for the Space Program, but in the end, he was only a fallible man. Space is for all mankind. And as pointed out, others have done more for space development (Goddard, etc).

Other names I like: Fearless, Intrepid, Independence, Liberty, Dauntless.

Too bad "USS Twin Towers" doesn't sound right.

And just to piss off somebody, "Sword of Allah."

Somebody email this thread to NASA!

If we are going to consider honoring an individual with the name, no one has done more for the space program than Werhner Von Braun. I still can't believe there hasn't been a NASA center named after him. If it weren't for him the space program wouldn't exist.

Ja! Ze Germans take some pride in having virtually built the space program (in both the US and Russia). Just too bad they lacked the democracy/capitalism to really push it forward...that's where we came in.
 
Call it crazy or whatever but I have had in mind for many years an idea for a ship that has no wings and does not require a solid fuel for propellent. I have never been fond of this insane "flying" at break neck speed re-entering Earth's atmosphere or taking off on an oversized bottle rocket either.

I will start bloggin the ideas, perhaps just beyond my lifetime Man will have the ability to build it.
 
Does anybody who recommended the name Constitution realize that OV-101 (Enterprise) was originally named Constitution? I vote for Enterprise because it has a very long history in the armed forces.
