While I like enduring freedom I think they should be kept to one word names.

I think Serendipity would be a good name... especially if it was the first of a new generation.

something romantic... like the Spirit of St Louis... even thought that was taken by Amelia Earheart.

America is a bad name for anything. You don't want a ship named America to sink or a Shuttle named America to crash. It's too symbolic.

if they build one on the old design, it should be called the USS Cygnus... a ship stuck in a black hole where tax dollars go never to be seen again.

S.S. Devoid of Humor

If you think, 2 days after this tragedy, that a discussion on possible names for a replacement shuttle is any kind of place for "humor", then you are a disgrace to the Air Force R.O.T.C.

Don't wrap yourself in the flag and expect me to apologize to you. I have nothing but sympathy for the crew of the downed aircraft. Humor is a way for many people to cope and I wasn't making fun of the crew in any way, just your lack of sense of humor.

S.S. Way too Anal!

Enterprise. the shuttle enterprise isnt an actual working shuttle. it never was.

Our military keeps reusing names, partly because it's tradition that surrounds the names. i was torn between the constitution, and the Enterprise, but in the end i chose Enterprise mostly because Constitution is a weapon of War, not something that is meant to expand our horizons and look beyond. something that promotes world cooperation.

there are more things surrounding the name Enterprise than just the AirCraft Carrier. It has one of the richest histories of any of our ships names.

the enterprise was our first nuclear powered aircraft carrier. it pioneered nuclear power on ships.

the first enterprise was captured for the american military by bennidict arnold in the Revolutionary war.

there have been 8 naval enterprises, not including all the other enterprises (shuttles, and such)

besides, there wont be another shuttle. there will probably be something similar to the X-33. but the problem with those is that again, you're flying dead stick on reentry, and in addition, you have no space for payload.

and besides, so much of our history has been shaped by television, why dont we make a legacy we can look back on and laugh, but still be proud of?

nonononono no freedom..please...enough of that.....

this is about adventure.....about venturing out.......besides...seems like shuttles are named after adventurous words...like how carriers are usually named after generals or presidents, subs are after cities....etc etc...

so..yeah ..something like voyager or something like that would be coool......

No wait...

It must be "Fearless" because every astronaut to step into a shuttle must be just that!!!
