Astronauts carry guns? :D

Enterprise is not just related to space shuttles. Look a few posts up, one of the posters speaks about the history of the name Enterprise. And asinine comments like yours are not welcome.

He said it had a long history in the armed forces.

Is the Shuttle considered a military vehicle? I don't see how that applies.

Besides, it was a joke. Some people need to lighten up a little.

Then I vote for the "Golden Hind" after Sir Frances Drake's ship.

If we are going to consider honoring an individual with the name, no one has done more for the space program than Werhner Von Braun. I still can't believe there hasn't been a NASA center named after him. If it weren't for him the space program wouldn't exist.

Ja! Ze Germans take some pride in having virtually built the space program (in both the US and Russia). Just too bad they lacked the democracy/capitalism to really push it forward...that's where we came in.

Sort of hard to push it forward after your country has been reduced to ashes.

I think "Intrepid", "Invincible", "Indefatigable", etc might be avoided cause those were/are British ships. However, the way things are going, "Indecisive" might sound good..

I think "Forbearance" would be good; maybe "Endurance."

Others-
"Encounter", "Enchanter/Enchantment", "Envision", "Enlighten", "Endearance", "Enamor", "Enigma", "Encore", "Endogenous"
"Ascension", "Aurora", "Juxtaposition", "Pandora", "Consul", "Envoy"

not to pull up a dead thread, but I've noticed that space shuttle's whose names begin with "C" have a very high failure rate, thus I recommend against chosing one named "Constitution" or any other "C" name. Not b/c there is a hex on "C" but b/c it doesn't sound good when 2 C* shuttles have already gone down.

I personally think the next Space Shuttle should be flown unmanned and then work with automation to ferry material to and from low-earth orbit. If the mission is to include astronauts then it should be done with a breakaway module, with accommodations for 2-3 people, rather than being designed around the living quarters. This would seriously decrease the overall cost of operations. Especially considering that we need a freighter to build the space station, not a research vehicle.

I think we should invest in the shuttles replacement, ex the X33 that WAS slated for launch this year until bush pulled the plug now to cover their ass their giving nasa a meezley 700 million in additional funds, thats a joke if I've ever heard one, nasa needs 4 billion just to keep up with inflation, bush needs to stick his missle defense system (which has a 90% failure rate) strait up his ass. and invest in our space agency or close it.

we already have an Enterprise and rule 1 of space shuttle naming, don't name a space ship twice with the same name.

PS whats up w/ all the newb's commin in like they own the place, look at your join date and the persons join date your about to correct, and if your join date is < theirs, shut your pie hole.

Some more names:

Triumph
Conquest
Dominion
Sovereignty
Freelancer
Hopewell (think Henry Hudson's three ships)
Concepcion (Magellan's 3rd of five ships)
Resolution (Capt. Cook's ship, some of his other ships were Endeavor and Discovery)
Matthew (John Cabot's ship; means "Gift from God")
Friendship

they should sell advertising space on the outside of the ship. Imagine giant red and white space shuttle named the Coca~Cola hurtling into space.

Constitution was the name that 'was' to be used on what became the Enterprise.
All of the Shuttle Fleet were in fact named for the sailing ships that explored the North American Continent.
Shuttle Names

There are no parts left to make another from 'SPARES' like with the Endeavour.

The designs of the late 60's and early 70's that lead us to build the current fleet of Space Shuttles are obsolete.

Forward thinking along the lines of the 'National Aerospace Plane' which was cancelled need to be resurected,
and the petty infighting that lead to the functional castration of NASA had to stop.
You can't fund a Multi Billion Dollar Future, with miserly nickel and dime thinking.

Names should continue to be those of famous reasearch vessels from the past - to carry on the tradition of exploration.
